hey, i'm a dumb aussie and i want to know what are the good places to play in NZ, my band is a drums/sax/effects two piece, probably most comparable to primus i guess. Tell me about the small-medium sized 'indie' venues you have. I hear Galatos is good.

three main venues in Dunedin - Arc, ReFuel and the Crown. all are great at featuring variety and different genres. Arc generally gets regular crowds, the Crown alt audiences and ReFuel students, but there's a lot of crossover.

primus sounds hot tho' bro' so aim for the nice nailess floor of bar bodega. booking early probably helps. get some rockin locals on yer' bill too.
valve bar is nice and compact, so the sound has less of a chance to go awry. smokier than grandpas ashtray tho'.
could try good luck bar too, this is the place smaller than all. but you'll get well looked after and the punters are up for anything other than cheesy house. it has a plush sexy bar too.
indigo bar is more expansive floor area than the above. but will only win if the sound is awesome. contain that wild beast.

anywayz, I went to Gelatos on Wed for a gig. I think it fits in about 400-500, well the gig was sold out @ 450. Or try Rakino's-High St, Auckland: First Floor overlooking High St's Freyberg Place, with balcony*very lovely setting. Or London Bar-Corner of Wellesley St & Queen St: seen a couple of Jazz bands jam up there on occasion-place is kinda like a RSA's in the center of town-but still all good.
Or just come over man, check it out yourself, good hunting
