Keeping fit

I have started running in the mornings- it's blimmin brilliant- I'm remembering how much I enjoyed it back in school. Just puts you on a natural high for the rest of the day.

Anyone else pounding the pavement, so to speak...

Forums: The Bar,

Can't stand running, but I'm intending to do some yoga/pilates on my mornings off (once my flatmates have all gone to work). The biggest issue I have with exercise is that I get bored really quickly - running, swimming, walking, aerobics etc all get really dull when I've been doing the same routine for any more than a month. I'm really determined to stick with the yoga partly to train myself into the more meditative aspects, but a couple of times a week will probably be all I can stand.

I'm also intending to take up tennis or netball since the concentration required to play keeps my brain ticking over, and I like the social interaction.

The only thing I don't like about running is the tricks your mind plays on me when I'm feeling worn out and want to stop... like how suddenly I start thinking about how nice an iceblock would be... or how nice it would be to just stop & walk for a little bit to catch my breath... but NO! I STOP myself!
Must - finish - the - circuit!

//the tricks your mind

Well that would be even weirder than the tricks MY mind plays on me... as if running wasn't hard enough...

// I'm also intending to take up tennis

That's good to hear. so you have no racquet experience? It can be hard when you start out. I mean, it's taken me ages to get my backhand up to the point where it's my best shot. It enraged for atleast 2 years I'd say. one broken racquet along the way.

I played when I was in my teens for a bit- I remember feeling well exercised, but also like I could keep going for ages. My game was amateurish at best.

you cover a lot of ground during a game. Just from running back and forward. The down side is that you can injure yourself pretty badly. I need to change my serve, my back has been suffering.

I have jst been in formed this morning, that I need to drop about 15kg, before I have a wee bit of vist to the hospital, diet will not do this because I watch carefully what I eat as it is..............
So seriously, I would love some ideas...
I was thinking something in the water, I hate hate walking / running..

superlax¿?

meaning laxatives right?
if i was you- id avoid them... or be very careful when you take them... i had to take a couple of diff types before a "little visit to the hospital" recently.. one tasted disgusting and had me throwing up- which kind of wasnt the purpose... the other complelely dehydrated me... making you highly emotional, tired and can feel ill very quickly... id rather recommend you visit your GP, a nutritionist or dietician- if you dont want to do strenuous exercise, although they are quite likely to suggest it...
otherwise there is always those food replacement type drinks...
how long have to you got to lose the weight?

excercise is the only solution. simple as that. There's no easy fix.

I use to swim in the mornings and it was the absolute best way to wake up to a job you hate. . Can't stand the thought of running unless its on a basketball court. I find running really boring so chasing a ball and jumping up and down a court makes running.... fun.

Don't do these activities as much as I should. I do give my poi's a bit of a thrashing in a park most mornings. Its good for the mind, very relaxing but very physical work. You should try it. Don't do fire poi's as much but thats even better... Half the fun is trying not to get burnt.

You trip out and the people walking their dogs in the morning trip out also.

I go to the gym three days a week and do weights, then two or three alternate days doing some sort of cardio. I've decided that I'm going to do Round The Bays this year, and I want to run it, so I've switched my cardio days to running. I'm starting off on the treadmill, but sooner or later I'm going to have to hit the streets.

I've discovered that the potential tedium of spending half an hour or so on a bike/treadmill/cross-trainer can be relieved by the magnificent invention that is the iPod.

The best advice I'd seen about picking exercise to do is to go for something you can do really easily. For example, if you have to drive for half an hour to reach a pilates studio, it gives you more excuses not to go than just putting your shoes on, stepping outside and going for a walk.

//the magnificent invention that is the iPod.

Aha! Yes, the acquisition of something like this would definitely make me more inclined to resume my evening walks. Actually, a long time ago I had a discman...hey, maybe I put it in the same box as my virginity...

Bad pick-up line: hey heather, if you haven't got your virginity anymore, can I have the box that it came in?

Wow! Just what my girls & I have been thinking. We are definitely going to the gym & we must partake in some social heart beat activities. I like this topic..great reminder. Pilates I heard was pretty good, my friend does it & she looks terrific..all n all its all about balance, excercise, eating properly, sleeping well.

i think im gonna start running again soon, its the will to start that is putting me off, once ive started im set.

Oh tell me about the will to even start..that really gets to most people doesn't it.

i love running in the mornings
it helps me clear my head
and prepares my body for the bad things i put in it

although, it snowed yesterday

i swear i could run off a cliff though, i get so tranced out

I just bought a swingball
hoping hitting the crap out of it will be good for OOS
they don't make em like they used to. the ball keeps coming off

A pump session twice a week does the trick... on top of Kayaking, walking and Dragon boating (oh god i cant wait :D )

I do no regular exercise, but I do bounce on a trampoline quite a bit & walk most places I go if possible. Yet I had no trouble climbing up a mountain on Thursday. It was wonderful, the Southern Alps are so beautiful, love the glaciers around Mt Cook National Park. I recommend everyone climb go climb a mountain or two.

Yeah bro,

Keeping fit is good for musicians, and people in general. I'm going to do the Wellington Round the Bays fun run...for...fun!!!!

keep it up!

//Keeping fit is good for musicians

I agree, I prefer my musicians to have hot arms.

No, I wouldn't say I pound the pavement on a regular basis. I do play tennis up to 4 times a week though. oh yeah, foetusboy, a good way to keep teh weight off is to eat less and drink spirits heavily. Just look at slash, still in great shape for a man in his 40s.

True- although last time I saw him with his shirt off was on top of the piano in the November Rain video, and I seem to remember him sporting a bit of a paunch... am I right?

haha, you could be right.

I bmx to and from work 4/5 days a week, if I don't bike it I walk it
It definatly puts you in a better mood than bussing or putting up with bad traffic, it's even better in the rain

and did I forget to mention you get to have spokiedokies on your bike

Meh. I just want to stay healthy. I can't eat what I want anymore without it affecting my weight- In my teens and early twenties I was almost immune to putting on weight- not the case anymore, bugger it.

Fuck weight... if you feel good, then that's all that matters really.

likewise foetus.

// Fuck weight... if you feel good, then that's all that matters really.

so I take it you're morbidly obese?

//Fuck weight... if you feel good, then that's all that matters really.
shut up saul... this is a good statement... weight doesnt/shouldnt matter as long as your happy with yourself... this is why a lot of people can get in to trouble with eating disorders and such- never being happy with their appearance and so eating nothing or eating alot... while exercise and being healthy should be an important part of anyones life, learning to be happy with your body is also very important...
