New Zealands Equivilent of Sigur Ros... etc

Wondering if any of you know of any bands in this great country that capitilise on alternative instrumentals, melodys and the like. (see scandinavian band Sigur Ros and that sorta thing)

Forums: NZ Music,

I assume by NZ equivalent of Sigur Ros, you'll be referring to soaring soundscapes, and extended subtle melodies, right?

Jakob, HDU, The Dukes Of Leisure are guitar based soundscapey stuff - lots of long builds and orgasmic releases... sstimuluss are worth checking out for electronic soundscapes with erethal vocals - and you can dance to it... as well as our ambient electronic masters - Jet Jaguar, Aspen, rotor+, etc.

God, I love ambience.

Oh yes, and it is all mostly standard stringed and electronic instruments being used by these acts as far as I can tell... except that The Dukes Of Leisure (7 piece band) use occasional flugelhorn, harmonica through a vocoder, etc.

Great! Thanks; I'm checking them out right now.

Check out the new capitalrecordings/involve compilation. In fact check out anything Bevan Smith (aka Aspen) has had a hand in.

Yeah, Bevan's a big fan of acts like Sigur Ros. The last Signer album has some more guitars and shiznit on it. I don't really hear much connection between that kind of thing and the mainly synth & drum machines sounds of the Aspen releases.

Hmm... I can't really think of any particular NZ act that has that I reckon has that shimmering, ethereal sorta vibe going, really.

That said I haven't heard that new comp. People I've spoken to are saying "post-rock" and stuff about it, and judging from the acts I know on it I guess it will fit the vibe.

substandard are pretty good, despite their name... Dimmer playing live would be worth checking out. See Jakob live... must have seen them like 7 or 8 times all over the country and they've got to be one of the most consistent bands I've ever seen. They rocked at the KA last night. NZ seems to have a long history of bands that do the whole guitar ambience stuff.

the Sigur ros sound is pretty unique tho... comes with playing a violin bow on his guitar.... and no doubt coming from iceland.

The Conray album is a magnificent example of instrumental soundscape music...

Thanks for all these great bands guys...
