that movies fucking wicked, so there
awesome style and cinematography, cool soundtrack, mindless cartoon violence, and uma thurman in a yellow catsuit ...how can that be bad?? :)
and fucknuts David Lane (of Society for Promotion of Community Standards) is trying to ban it, so better see it now
gee...i havn't seen it yet but i had heard it was rather good...on a sidenote everyone go see UNDEAD - aussie zombie film....best zombie flick i've seen since braindead!!
speaking of cheesy, does anyone remember an 80's horror called 'The Burning' ? it's about this group of campers that canoe up a river and then get attacked by a psyco with hedge clippers. it's probably really dumb but when i was 10 years old it scared the shit outta me.
Haven't seen it, but it's been billed here as an ultra low-budget slasher. It came out around the time of '48 days later' and there were lots of double-reviews of the two films as new spins on zombie flicks, normally favouring 'Undead'.
it most certainly is a comedy...very funny!!! low budget but looks surprisingly good..the main character marion has a triple barrel shotgun amongst other weapons and is brilliant!! Not sure if its getting a cinema release here or if its going straight to video....
yea...i probbaly preferred undead to 28 days later...28 days later was good but very familiar in a dawn/day of the dead way...whereas undead starts out a bit night of the living dead but then goes a bit scifish and unexpected things start happening...
manamana.....the burning is fucking awesome...cropsy is the caretaker who they burn in a prank gone wrong and he comes back for revenge using a big pair of hedge clippers. do you remember that scene when a group of kids row out on the river to retrieve a canoe which has drifted out.....little do they know that cropsy has set a drift the canoe and he is waiting inside it. then he jumps up and there is that cool shot of cropsy with his hands raised above his head holding his hedgeclippers and one of the kids puts his hands up in fright and cropsy chops them off..great fucking movie! and a very young holly hunter is in it as well as jason alexander (george from seinfeld)with a full head of hair...he plays like one of the high school jocks.
i kind of have issues with the cartoon version of Japan depicted in Lost In translation. On one hand its funny, but on another its terribly stereotyped. Sofia Coppola must have had some heavy shit breaking up with Jonze cos she seems to be a very gifted filmmaker but the mantle of "japan" as something to feel so alienated from does not really gel with my own experience of that country... However, the shot of Johannsen sitting in the bath in silhoutette with the grainy Tokyo sky behind is burnt indelibly on my retina.
Yeah, I was wondering about that. I've never been to Japan, but it does fit with how friends have described it and also fits with other times I've been somewhere I didn't want to be...
There were a couple of Japanese women in the theatre when I saw it and I did wonder what they thought of people laughing at some of the "here's Japan being weird" scenes. But I don't think it's racist. Maybe even mentioning that word dooms reasonable conversation. I guess what I mean to say is that I don't think the film paints a negative picture of Japan or suggests all Japanese people are the same. Are you worried it does? As I say, I'm not operating by first hand experience of the place so your take may well be different from mine...
hmmm no i don't think she is racist. i mean, i couldn't imagine a racist making such a nice little movie. its a mood piece i guess.
it just seems to be easy to accentuate the 'weird' aspects of japan rather than actually engage with the culture. and, its true, it is about alienation so heightening the sense of isolation through language and culture seems a reasonable filmic device, and makes sense in terms of Lost in translation. I just thought it was little bit lazy. like, in that hotel the showerheads do actually go higher, she didn't need to make that joke, y'know?
all the young japanese people i know are fucken cool, albeit crazy. Japan IS a head fuck, i'll admit that
and the scene where the dude sings the sex pistols almost made me piss my pants. Although, that was the longest piece of 'dialogue' a japanese person gave in the entire film.
when i go to other countires i like looking at the things that are the same but different, like bus tickets or packaging on crisps
My take on the almost perpetual weirdness of the Japanese in "Lost In Translation" is that rather than being a documentary-like representation of Japan, it's an exaggeration to represent not just a time and a place, but a feeling as well.
In my experience, if I'm in a foreign city for a very short time, the things that stick out are all the differences. The little things that totally catch you and make you feel like a stranger in a strange land.
So by exaggerating these things, Coppola has emphasised the way an ordinary city feels like a strange, alienating city for Murray and Johansson's characters. If they were to feel totally at ease in Japan (even with their marital problems), there would be less of an excuse to spend time with each other.
But having said that, I can understand why some Japanese are uncomfortable with the way Japanese are shown in the film.
