School Dates

As many of yous will be heading back for school today (if not yesterday) im sure many of you will be ranting about a long boring year in The Jailhouse. What im saying isnt a rant, its more of an issue many people have been calling upon the Ministry of Education to do.

These Days Schools commence the year On the Final week of January, which is sort of out-of-touch. Even in my School days the first week of February was typically the start of a New School Year. Primary schools are more of the concern as the "6 week summer holiday" has been basically shortened to 4 and 3/4 weeks.

Alot of Schools in the United states and most countries in Europe commence the School year on the first week of spring (September) while others do so in Mid-August, Thus allowing children to enjoy there summer break in full.

What im proposing is that a Typical school year would be under the following options.

A - 1st week of March - 2nd week of December
B - 3rd/4th Week of February - 2nd Week of December.

It will allow Children and there families to enjoy there summer break for a little longer and at least - ride out The Intense heat of February which is typically NZs hottest month. It will also benefit teachers as well, as Heat is known to cause Student distrations and behavioral problems in class.

Forums: The Bar,

just because I like to argue: there are a lot of parents who would find relief in their kids going back to school because they no longer have to pay childcare or burden friends and family while they have to work.
And also, high school aged kids especially have lots to get through and the days are precious, heat or no heat - NCEA?
Generally I'm all for longer holidays though Sam; everyone should have the six week break.

Sam while I can see your point overall, you do realise the shortening of the summer holidays means there are more holidays throughout the year don't you? Four term year now. I guess you have to balance up whether heat fatigue or 'long-term' fatigue is more taxing on kids.

I only ever found school to be too cold rather than too hot.

yes. but given your town of origin....

try going back to school in the flatlands on a 35 degress norwest day

You can't go wrong with further education.
Good for everyone - students back to learning environments, see friends, financial support for lunch from parents (for the younger students), give parents a break & everything goes back to its normal cycle again..and so the year continues..

Sorry. As for school dates..its rather ridiculous. Everytime I return home during lunch breaks I see my brother, sister & all their friends outside of home..its like they're forever on holiday these days..I can remember we only had 3 terms..and Hooray they go back to college today which is such a relief..I dont have to envy them when Im working & they're not at school. These dates are very ridiculous & its as if they're cutting off education bit by bit & making it appear as if there is no difference. Students might as well start in March..how awkward can our education systems go.

sam bro. can you restrict these little proposals, suggestions and policies to your own site or your rimutaka electorate manifesto because it's really tiring - and old. it's self-absorbed, stagnant and pointless.

and maybe you should do something with these ideas. walk the walk for once. talk is cheap.

just a suggestion, bro.

Dont you reckon its true though..all these stupid dates for school & all these unpredicatable holidays that some students are getting.

well vietnow i know your suggesting something, its got nothing to do with standing for candicace, its just an opinion, know what im sayin?

but you understand my point, right?

You really are gunning for a school girl, aren't ya Sam?

school girls - far too young for me tclack. far too young for me.

I didn't date when I was at school.

bah ! you bet me to it !

Sorry! But I want to know if people in NZ did actually "date", rather than just "going round with" people.

its still 'goign round with'

hah, well "dating" or "going round with" - I did neither. My current young lady of almost 3 years is my ex-4th-form crush though, lucky me !

I'd always wondered that exactly the great American ritual of dating was all about. A few years ago I read a book written from the perspective of a British woman in New York. In one part she's astonished when she finally figures out what "dating" is.

Basically, it's when you and guy (or girl) go out on dates (dinner, nightclubs, etc), but you aren't actually a couple. You're just dating, and are free to see other people. You're testing the water to see if you'd like to be this person to be your boy/girlfriend. Then you have "the conversation" where you discuss what direction your relationship is going in.

How complicated, yet how New York.

i like the way us NZers do things, the america meaning of 'dating' going out places etc is what you do when your togeather, its alot simpler when you say something like 'keen?' and then start 'dating'

the being unsure and shits gone, there is beauty in simplicity

in school i was alienated from much of my peers however i did manage to acheive one chick for 15 months, one one chick a year ahead of me did take interest at the beginning of 3rd form but we never dated.

// in school i was alienated from much of my peers

no, really?

// no, really?

HAHA!!! almost shat myself!

You're so right Robyn - and yet its even more deliniated. You have a date, dating, seeing someone, then a girl/boyfriend - in ascending order of seriousness. And everyone seems to have different expectations about each level. I am - as an interested observer outside of all of this - constantly amazed by how structured these rules seem to be for some people, and how seriously they can be taken, esp in new york.

I never was a hot date back in school but now..lets just say Im a swan...
*ching ching*

Ummm Riiiiiight.

I think the change from Jan to Feb has everything to do with the four term year, and the additional week's holiday in the middle of the year than any other evil cause. This probably actually occurred while you were at school. Maybe you just don't remember it happening.

The current school year is set up on a fairly sound educational basis. The final weeks of the three term year were less productive, hence the change to four. If anything, there is some suggestion that the summer holiday should be reduced as apparently we tend to forget enough over the holidays with its current length.

ive worked it out. a typical NZ school year should go something like this.

A 4 Term year should remain if instruction was increased from 6 to 8 hours a day, anyhoo kids are gunna have to put up with 8 even 10 hour days when they get jobs so eventually they will have to endure it. with 8 hour school days a typical school term-year would go.

TERM 1: 2nd to last Monday in February - Easter
TERM 2 - 2wks after easter - last Friday in June
TERM 3 - 3rd Monday in July - Last Friday in September
TERM 4 - 2nd monday in Oct - 2nd Friday in December.

agree/disagree, agree to disagree?? any alterations?? or does this sound fair.

That's an outsiders view. I say this because of the fact that there is never enough time to work during a school year. Because in all honesty, students need as much time at school as possible so there is actually time to learn things, for example we ended up doing 3 internal maths assessments during the last term (which was 4 weeks) having only had 2 others during the year. Having more time makes it so there is suitable time to learn things.
Had there been those dates that you suggested we would have been absolutly fucked.
Although...She was a pretty shitty maths teacher.

sam are you insane? like really... have you completely lost your marbles?
8-10hour school days for a teenager... the numbers of students wagging would increase..... a 5 year old... they wouldnt survive a week let alone a year... and telling a five year old that if they last this theyl get longer holidays- its just aint gona work... sorry what was your age again? like 21?23? youre young enough in my mind to be able to remember what it was like to be in school... have the drugs just completley addled your mind...?
oh and before anyone- namely you sam- uses the argument that overseas schools have long hours such as these- yeah well they also have half days etc which we dont get here in NZ..
its was a struggle enough last year with such short terms (because of ncea etc) to get all the work and assessments done... shortening the school year wouldnt help and would put even more pressure on teachers and students.. how on earth would you retain and encourage teachers to stay/enter the profession sam...? teachers already work excessive overtime hours unpaid... and dont say the government would pay them more and all that kind of stuff- cos then, of course, where does that money come from? we dont have it now, let alone if you changed it to a system like this... and even people who enjoy working with children would most likely not be happy with having to deal with 5 year olds-who at the best of times can be a handful-when theyv been "working" all day...
ok rant over for now... think sam... back to high school and intermedite and primary school days... after 6 hours you were most likely desperate to get out of there...

i can see your concern libelle but its a small price to pay for a smarter, more wiser New Zealand.

// smarter, more wiser New Zealand.

i can't imagine that NZ will become "more wiser" as a result of your idiotic ideas. go to your room and smoke some more pot.

//go to your room and smoke some more pot.
Yes Maam

//small price to pay
hahahaha... Bull.Shit.
when you have no teachers cos theyv all taken off overseas, because the working conditions back here are so crap, then itl be a huge price to pay... and that would just be the beginning... then we'd be a stupider NZ cos we have people who shouldnt be teaching, teaching us...
yes we are just so much better off doing things your way sam...! (oh and cos youl be stoned, and just Wont get it- that was sarcasm)

calm down libelle, sweet jesus....here have a winegum.

hahahahha you just dont like being beaten at your own game... =)

ahh....u win libelle i give up :-)

// i can't imagine that NZ will become "more wiser" as a result of your idiotic ideas

idiotic because you disagree with them? you're one of the biggest idiots here my dear.

oh yeah, tclak, I'm counting on you for a witty comeback.

OK, how about this? You're as bigoted as Lucifer_Sam. You two should start some kind of redneck-hippy party and legalise pot while you outlaw sex.

very funny tclak, very funny.

//ahh....u win libelle i give up :-)
hear that people? this topic can be closed! sam acknowledges that this is a stupid idea...
and sam- of course you give up! theres no way you could have won!
*happy sigh* ...men are so easy to beat in to submission... ;)

Yesterday the inadaquete life I lead finally dawned on me. I thought I'd feel better if I belittled lucifer sam on nzm. funny thing is when i work up this morning Im still the same arsehole I was yesterday. whilst its probably accurate to say I agree with virtually nothing you post Sam, you always a source of "alternate thinking" on current issues. and for that Im thankful.
