yay- shocking pinks finally graduated from playing fac49 to playing- uh- fac51

Yay! good to see you guys finally got round to putting up something on this site... saw you at the Kings arms w/ mint C's and DDD and was real impressed. had a quick yarn to the bassist (didnt catch his name) afterwards... looking foward to the album. Hope you're touring up here again with it. keep up the good work... Liked the video on C4 by the way....

i heard today that main man nick has just sacked entire band AGAIN
heaps of people say hes a cock but i have never really had much to do with him
i remember one incident at some kind of big harvest party
i was out of my mind (beer , mushrooms)
i then got hid in the head by a flying snowboard (no really some kids had tied it to a tree and were swingin) so with blood pissing i sauntered over to where the bands were playing.
there was the hi toned destroyers with nick on drums playing jumping jack flash
it was real cool however i noticed nick ride cymbal stand was giving him major grief.
Since it was his only cymbal (no crash here) i took it upon my self to hold the cymbal stand (at some discomfort)for 20 or so minutes so he could reach it.

he offered no thanks

Nick "Harte"?
That pretentious studenty prima-donna Truffaut-watching greasy chin-stroking Nietzsche-reading pasty-white poseur is the new Maestro Cooltone.

im confused, if the band is sacked i saw some wehre they are playing in auckland for an a low hum tour i think.....
ill happily replace the members of the old bandif they have been kicked out that is... i can play key board , drums..

The shocking pinks is a one man band, with contributions.... i like to think of them as seeing something different everytime, as you're never too sure what to expect.

at a recent shocking pinks show I went up to hin and told that i had seen him play drums once before and i thought he was "pretty tight" - clearly a compliment and meant as an olive branch so to speak.
he then proceeded to inform me that "you get to a stage with drumming when tightness is a bad thing , i am trying to play loose theese days" all this was delivered in a very "holier than thou" tone.
he may be a bit talented, even vaguely stylish, but he is a naysayer of the worst degree.

yea 1 big GOOD JOB to nick - tell ME whats up with the drum set..... like the tiny kitten teasing the german shepherd....

It's lovely to see people I thought were my friends saying such kind and TRUE things about me here. Oh well, if anyone cares I am currently assembling a kick-ass five-piece line-up for touring etc. We need: a drummer, a guitarist, a synth-player and a bassist. We are based in Christchurch. So, if you know anyone intersted in being a Shocking Pink then please send me a message at: theshockingpinks@hotmail.com

ALL applications will be successful, the band will be replaced at every show.

// the band will be replaced at every show.

between songs, i heard.

I thought Nick would have already been through most of Christchurch's music scene by now...

// saying such kind and TRUE things
hearty sarcasim there . . .

I swear on my father's grave that everything I have detailed in this thread is totally, completely true.

GJ on getting nominated for a couple B net awards dude

"the shocking pinks began earlier in the year of 2003. i am a wrangler. i don't know what else to call myself. i write all (apart from one or two bass and guitar lines) of the music. i design clothes (you can see my new line at Quadrata - 175b high street christchurch). i write lyrics. i write. i read, or more appropriatley i research. i manage. i make films. i play musical instruments (vocals, drums, electronics, guitar, bass, viola, cello, violin, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, piano). i sniff petrol. i fall in love."

trumpet?

8.2 on Pitchfork - nice work.

Thanks heaps Foaf. Man, I don't know where all this negative feedback is coming from ? It saddens me, because I only play music because it is my only way to "communicate" properly. I don't know why Simon (Rusty-James) has such a chip on his shoulder. I have never been rude and have always really respected him. He a fucking beautiful drummer. The band changing lie-ups so much is that we become such great personal friends that we feel the music will get in th eway. The new album is totally solo to avoid any confusion... Sorry if Iever upset you Simon, I promise I never meant to.

Nick Harte

that sounds so fake, however i read the pitchfork review and i'm interested to hear the album.

it's not ur fault you're a weenis
it's not my fault I need to pick on weenis's in forums on the internet

keep up the good work,
i am very surprised!

// weenis
That's my new favourite word.

I've got your album, I bought it a week after it was released and I have enjoyed it ever since, I don't have a chip on my sholder towards you... I don't even know you.

I heard on c4's IP last tuesday that 'Dance the Dance Electric' makes him cringe????

yeah heard that too... i got the album earlier this year, i think its great

well, next time someone thinks their own music is terrible - ill make sure to love it! - not stopping there - i ll even buy it!

Sometimes when you record stuff that is "personal" to you, you feel differently towards it later on. That is the case with "Dance...". I am just really excited about the new album, and cannot wait to get it out there. It is way more consistent. I don't MIND the 1st album, but parts of it DO make me at least blush a little...

i hear ya man,
i find my own music so embarressing a generaaly only play it to people i think deserve to be punished.

btw, when is the new album available?

I think this forum went astray too quickly. But hey thats not unusual.

Basically the 'Dance The Dance Electric' album is solid. Solid ~ very good. I've listened to it in my car for about a week straight and while it doesn't blow your mind (it doesn't attempt to) it's definitely one of the best NZ releases this year. I would not hesitate to recommend this one as an essential purchase.

my bad,
i must nickolai has handled my S*** better than anyone i have have set my beedy little troll eyes on
i mean look at me, im all apoligetic

NICE...

It's been a while since I've heard a new NZ band/album worth getting behind. While all the fashion bands keep missing the mark, I keep thinking this particular genre has fallen away - when it's what some of the best NZ bands have done so well. Why is there not more like this?

I read in the bands bio influences include Rapture (nice!), but in my weird way I'm hearing Ride crossed with Subliminals, some Love's Ugly Children, some Bilge Festival (oh yeah). But then I'm like that.

// It's been a while since I've heard a new NZ band/album worth getting behind.

i wouldn't exactly class the shocking pinks as a band.

//It's been a while since I've heard a new NZ band/album worth getting behind.

fuck yeah dust, way to get off the fence!

¿you got a copy of new orders 1st album?

I take it you haven't seen them live yet dust?

¿esg?

//i wouldn't exactly class the shocking pinks as a band.
blink, of course you wouldn't.

//fuck yeah dust, way to get off the fence!
if I was on it ... it was probably due to getting my gruts caught in the barb wire.

//I take it you haven't seen them live yet dust?
franrose, no I haven't. I can only assume you mean that, if I did, it would change my opinion on the album I've been listening to? Live performance *may* be a factor in changing my appreciation (for better or worse) but right now I have the rare privilege of simply enjoying a recording.

// //i wouldn't exactly class the shocking pinks as a band.

i don't think many would. The Shocking Pinks is Nick Harte. The Shocking pinks is a solo project, not that theres anything wrong with that.

Does anybody have a Shocking Pinks family tree? or a list of all the people who have either performed live with or recorded on the album? I'd be interested to see one.

very interested to hear their new recordings. I've been a big fan of their last demos.

I was attempting to point out how pedantic your topic tag was.

Its really nice you've been a fan for a long time too. Wonk wonk.

//Does anybody have a Shocking Pinks family tree? or a list of all the people who have either performed live with or recorded on the album? I'd be interested to see one.

Me (mel), Danny, Tim, Jono and Nick were the original members, I'm on track 11 (Us against the city)on "Dance the dance electric". I'm on some other recordings, but they will never be released (hopefully).

Don't really know who else was in the band after that, because the lineup changed so often that I really couldn't keep up with it all to be honest.

I had the honor of being the first band member to be fired by Nick :-D

//Does anybody have a Shocking Pinks family tree? or a list of all the people who have either performed live with or recorded on the album? I'd be interested to see one.

what came after mels list was kit and marie who i think only played the mike hex gig together, (i might be wrong), Matt joined in at some point after that, (perhaps it was at that gig?) i have no real idea. at some point danny and tim played with him again, the cool saxaphone guy and the computer guy (names I don't know) have also played with nick, I'm not too sure who else.

Lena, do you mean Movement?

She must. I think the ESG comparison is more on point... but really if you want to dismiss the Shocking Pinks for being derivative or unoriginal you could skip the 80s comparisons and go right for the current zeitgeist. Look at the kinds of bands label owner Tim rates, they're the same ones the Shocking Pinks can be compared to.

IF you want to bag them. I haven't heard enough to make my mind up. Friends I trust like the album.

no way- apart from dry heat- the other song ive heard a few times on active sounds like its totally lifted off a particular track from movement- ¿which other 1st new order album did you think i was referring to?

1 of my students gave me copies of all no stuff ears ago- up to the 1 with the opaque arty cover- unfortunately movement is missing- so i cant tell you which track it is- but i think its on the 1st side- somewhere in the 1st 4 tracks

//if you want to dismiss the Shocking Pinks for being derivative or unoriginal
what a weird world we live in. mainstream music in the last ten years has become so derivative its a common complaint in every generalisation about the state of music. Surely this album lives pretty low on the list of derivative creations.

//you could skip the 80s comparisons and go right for the current zeitgeist.
hmmm. very curious. I mean I'm interested bvecause I feel the current zeitgeist isn't strong enough in this area? Care to share more on this Jet? Curiuosity rising...!

//Friends I trust like the album.
I do to.

ok- so apart from esg- new orders 1st- the mekons 1st- bits of the comsats & the sound- for current stuff im guessing- ¿rapture?-- blegch-- aspectacle- die mensch- lope- the sink- the walkmen

¿anyone know where i can get a copy of bitch kittys mix of yess owner of a lonely heart?

I like the band lineup on the album. One of the (ex) members is listed as: Stylist/Vocals.

I'm still trying to get out of pink steel and bring on the wafer, but I can't seem to turn right!!

I also just realised we're talking about 2 things:

a) being derivative (possibly without merit?)

b) the one I cant define so well today (someone?) - its got bits of other bands, songs, and things that I like to hear in the creative potion. Like a 'family of influences'. Being from a more visual background the only way I can describe it is: A Basquiat is connected to Dubuffet, De Kooning, yet distinct and valid.

My thoughts on other bands in relation to SP here are very much about b).

Yeah, I'm not too worried about things being derivative. I think what's important thing is synthesizing something new out of your influences. I guess it's just Lena's dearest golden rule ... to thy self be true. I do think a lot of pop hits are more inventive than indie bands, but that's another story...

// Care to share more on this Jet?

OK, to be honest I have absolutely no idea if Nick listens to any of this stuff, but go look at the top fives for the user "Tim Dog". That's the guy who runs Pinocolada. Thinking about it further, most of the stuff I'm thinking of is probably less live. Maybe Nick's direction for the second album if it's just him?

Anyway, disclaimers aside, here's some suggestions for people who're synthesizing different 80s mix-ups of disco/funk/punk:

Heaps of stuff on Output Recordings, Trevor Jackson's record label. Maybe check out their 'Channel Two' comp, should be in shops in Welli. They've been releasing stuff by The Rapture. Trevor Jackson's album as Playgroup is certainly a mix of a lot of 80s things, but maybe more dancey than you're looking for.

'Channel Two' has a track by LCD Soundystem, which is the DFA. DFA are a production duo that are putting out heaps of mental shit. They've also been releasing the Rapture.

http://www.epitonic.com/labels/dfarecords.html

Way more dancey on the 80s revivalist tip is Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani's Metro Area. But I think it's worth mentioning them because Morgan's done remixes for more "rock" 80s revivalists... including (you guessed it) The Rapture and Franz Ferdinand.

Bla bla... hope this is constructive.

Oh, Tim Dog's pulled back on his top fives since I last thought to look.

I see epitonic.com actually have a whole "No Wave" section.

If you want trainspotting rambles about Trevor Jackson for the sake of more potential leads, I'm happy to oblige. Been following his stuff for about a decade now. I guess same with the DFA via member Tim Goldsworthy's involvement with Mo'Wax. Tim's remix of The Pastels as Flacco is ace. Not to mention that old UNKLE stuff. 'The Time Has Come' double 12" has to be one of my favourite EP/single/whatevers from the 90s.

Jesus, haven't even got coffee yet.

Turns out several years down the track these guys have just signed an album (compiling bits of the last two NZ releases) to DFA's label / EMI imprint. Weird world.

OK ONE MORE!!

Soul Jazz Records have been doing good work in re-issuing all this late 70s early 80s stuff if you want to go back a step. ESG, A Certain Ratio (a friend of mine used to listen to them in the early 90s and that was SO UNCOOL back then), Konk, Arthur Russell, Liquid Liquid, etc. Check out a comp called 'New York Noise'.

Or just check out all the hipper-than-thou acts namechecked in LCD Soundsystem's 'I'm Losing My Edge' ... god I love that song.
