Is This It?

As a New Zealand Band, are we doomed for only national fame and recognition??

Forums: NZ Music,

not always! look at the datsuns, they are like mean big in england and shit arent they?

crowded house have sold 30million albums world wide
open your mind

well, when you say "mean big" what do you mean? they are reasonably big but by no stretch of the imagination are they tearing up the charts or some such. they are respected as much as any fun lovin' quality rock band from anywhere in the world.

The thing with NZ arts and culture in general is the best of NZ is AS GOOD as anywhere else. in NZ its sublime cos its a little pool. I think the notion of some huge chart band a la westlife can happen anywhere in the world, and whilst i have no respect for westlife and they endless dross, is that the level of success that NZers want from their cultural exports?

I used to spend ages wating for the 'big thing' from NZ to happen. As soonas i moved away from the country years ago i r ealised: "oh. The best of anything is the same everywhere: fashion/design/film/music/architecture".

it would be misplaced arrogance to assume the dearth of HUGE international bands from NZ is somehow indicative of a conspiracy against NZ. Sure, NZers are extremely talented but who wants to be INXS?

The point i am trying to make is success on an international level requires drive and ambition and a self serving belief in the innate possibilites of FAME, not talent, as well as the muti millions of mass marketing. Devils spawn like robbie williams cuddle up to the beast and then complains when its not so nice. he scored a 90m GBP deal! jesus! nobody talks about the 150 EMI staff who lost their jobs as a result of the financial juggling this deal.

Little bands like the Datsuns rule cos they have fun, have belief in their music and wanna share it. I would be ashamed to see them in the same arena as Xtina, Britney etc. cos i wopuld know who had to lose their jobs to pay them.

Isn't that enough?

sorry about the spelling mistakes ;)

Dude- you're in the UK? I'll be there myself by the beginning of March- hopefully based in/around Camden/Archway/Kentish Town in London.

Anyway, with the move coming up I have noticed myself thinking along similar lines to yourself- NZ'rs realise that Brittany/Christina are BIG, but I think it's hard to digest just HOW BIG when you live on a small island in the middle of the pacific where BIG means 10,000 units sold... I don't even know what I'm trying to say except that yes, it's a 'small pool'.

its still a very very nice pool full of excellent talented people doing "the arts" out of love and compulsion as opposed to greedy self deluded automatons

k1w1.

Is that so much of a bad thing though? Essentially didn't we all get into playing music for the pure enjoyment. I've been blessed to be able to travel to a couple of countries to play, however I still get the most buzzes from playing to NZ people. Music made from our people relating to our people.

Over New Years, I got the chance to go back from the hotel kinda muso styles to the ol 12 in a broken van driving from gig to gig, and it was some of the most enjoyable gigs I've done for a while.

Music is my hobby that I have been lucky enough to play to many people, but one of the biggest thrills is, and always will be, the fact that I look around at the people I play with, and get continually amazed that I can do what I do. Anything else is a bonus.

'National fame and recognition' and 'doomed' in the same sentence?

Oh, it all makes sense now that I think about it... don't mind me...

dont be so hard on yourself ben......sure it will take some time but rome or london wherent built in 24 hours - that is start small, eventually breaking the local and national markets, then once your ready crack the trans-tasman market, if u can acheive that then in no time youll be big in the UK, Europe even the USA. (look at Crowded house).

If I were you I'd be fucking grateful you have supposed 'national' fame and recognition, do you have any idea how many bands out there don't even get that?
Stop your whinging!
Besides which - have you even tried the overseas market? The world is a really BIG place and there are a lot of music tastes out there, you prob just haven't tried the right country.

G'day people

if you whine as much in your songs as you do in these forums thats probly why.

you could be NZ's version of Staind

okay fine, so used the word doomed instead of, "is is it actually possible to pass beyond the national market?" sorry bout that, i love this place!! willis

Maybe NZer's don't get anywhere because we are ugly bastards. Remember, you have to be attractive to get somewhere now. I blame shallow people. And ugly people too.
