Peaches - some of her stuff is quite laid back, in a groovy form.
Chicks on speed - from what i've heard they are goooood, now hopefully groovy has an album or two :D
Yeah. I friend of mine kept going on about him. I d/led a track and liked it. Nothing much happened from there for a year or so then I was in the music store a month or so ago. Lo and behold there was the new album, I had some money to burn so bingo, proud owner.
Do let me know. cheers.
Sweet. Dunno if you know this but he's also in a band called Fridge. They don't do too much stuff any more from what I can tell, but I definitely saw most of their CDs around in Wellington. I'd recommend 'Eph' if you see it.
He's just released a Jay Dee remix of one of the tracks on Rounds actually!? As in the guy who produced Tribe, Slum Village, etc... Pretty mad pairing. Full MP3's on the label's website. Not sure what to make of it myself. Not the best thing I've heard from either of them.
OK, they're not in the least new, but one awesome artist I've just discovered is Richard and Linda Thompson. Richard was the guitarist of British folk-rock band Fairport Convention. He went solo in the early 70s, and married Linda (he also found time to contribute electric guitar to Nick Drake's first two albums). Anyway, the album I discovered, I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonights, Richard and Linda's first recording together is superb - folk-rock with a distinctly British flavour in both music and lyrics. Released in 1974, Richard wrote all the songs - he's quite a dab hand - and plays guitar both electric and acoustic (and he's a master - if you want to see from where Johnny Greenwood of radiohead may have learned his trade, just listen to Thompson play).
The couple split in 1982, and Richard resumed his solo career, releasing a string of critically well-received, but commercially unsuccessful albums. I'm not at all familiar with his solo stuff apart from what I've heard on compilations, but I should get around to checking him out. Oh, and an interesting bit of info: he co-wrote Persuasion with Tim Finn.
