A short lived late night topic...

look I know this is bloody bad form, but has anyone one looked at the top 25 posters list of late?
like who is on it and who is not anymore....... what the hell is going on.. we need some new maths here
So what should be the bench mark? because number of posts sure doesn't cut it as far as I can see.

Forums: The Bar,

Agreed. I vote we get rid of it entirely.

I disagree. I'd rather see jotun IP banned.

it's not just jotun............. but what % of the post of the top 25 are about music?
how many have ever posted anything about New Zealand Music?

Actually, I did think it'd be a good idea to apply it only to non-bar topics...

I also thought it'd be quite nice to be able to restrict certain individuals to only posting in the bar, rather than banning them outright...

ok yes only count non bar post... that could work
As for the other idea.. I'm not sure.. how would that slow them down?

Oh my god that thing you said was going to happen happened. Eeek.

eh what eh jo?

What's the problem with banning them outright, heather? On other forums I post at, idiots like that are banned for the good of teh forum no questions asked.

Well, not so much helping fight the general malaise, but there are some people that are just annoying - not offensive or abusive (unless, of course, you needle them sufficiently, in just the right way) so banning them wouldn't really be justified.

I fairly much gave up on worrying about the bar when a handful of people took to using it as a chatroom over the holidays. Not much worth reading, but not really worth deleting either.

I reckon also that annoying people would be less likely to re-register if they've still got a login that mostly works...

but does banning work........ I know I was back within a day....... I couldn't believe I had been banned, I was sure that it was some type of glitch, but back then banning was not admited to

ahh now I see your point.... but......... some people are very slow.

//some people are very slow.
yes. And stubborn. Stupidly stubbornly stupidly slow. And annoying. And talk too much.

I was surprised to see that kittenslayer's latest incarnation hit the top 25 in the same space of time as locquacmo. I didn't even notice. He doesn't even bother me any more, except for the occasional references to anal sex.

but dust has gone........ thats what really knocked me out of the water

Too busy overseeing lots of new exciting changes to make the site more trollproof, no doubt.

Sorry Aka, that was a reference to something that Heather said while she was in Welly.
(It was also an attempt on my part to chalk up another 600 posts or so to get into the top 25)

Ha, take a guess, Aka. It involves the top 25...and fairly much the same gripe as this topic, except in advance.
I think I take this site too seriously.

yes we had a similar discussion last year in nelson just after the list went up....... if i remember rightly emails were sent

people were posting dribble and had the cheek to say it was so they would get on the list.

For sure. I notice I'm not even in the top 25 anymore.

yes you are... just

come on, im not even a 5th as bad as i was when i started here, at least i like to think ive improved as a member

most improved I would say.......... didn't you take over someone else logon or was that just to take off the heat........
god this time last year nonbreed, just as mine was the year before..........
I know that people usually get better..
personaly I think jotun has shown this to be true

nah ive always stayed with the same login, just took a break during a holiday and came back too it.
jotun....its taken him a long time and many, many logins to improve the slighest bit

prisonsex
kittenslayer
kittenthyler
jotun

ive got a slight suspicion there is more thou..

oh and by the way normally I would have pulled us all over to chat .. but as chat is stuffed........ and be assured that this topic will be gone by the morning

the top 25 is good and bad, the bad part is that people like jotun get in for commenting on EVERYTHING... but the part i like is that when telling people about the site and showing them its like 'these are the people you'll interact with the most' and its cool because your sorta part on the community instead of just another member

the points abit weak but its hard to explain

yes it absoluty has it value but it needs a better messure than being a messure of who has the most time to waste

Perhaps they could use a measure based on the number of days that the user has posted on, perhaps? Even if you only post once or twice a day, the longer you've been around and actively participating, the higher up the list you are...new people are relatively far down the list, regardless of posting/chat sprees. The longer standing members (who we like because they've gotten over their annoying posting habits) are higher up the list.

thats a tricky bit of maths

instead of a top 25 posters, have a top 25 member, the people in the top 25 are for their contibution to topics etc

...
...

Nah, it's actually not that difficult - depending on the database you could do it in a single SQL query; regardless of the database you could definitely do it in two.

the forums have really exploded, population-wise, over the past year. I really think there ought to be two forums; one for the general public, and one for the "community", and the community one would be read-only for those who've not been invited to join.

It's not meant to be discriminatory, but there are definitely people here who remember when the forums were much more of a community environment, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to bring it back to that. there could be some sort of application process to join the community forum or something, and troublemakers could simply be banished to the public forums.

the performancecar.co.nz uses that system, it seems to work really well, because only serious people are 'allowed' in the private forums, the rest get to deal with the 'meat heads'

The more i think about that the more i like it... non breed how does one move up to play with the big kidds?

i recken a reecomendation could be good, eg my mate DeathMachine (my joke bands drummer, real bands drummer and Slipping Tongue drummer) has just joined and i can say for a fact he will contribute to the forums because hes dedicated to music in general and loves it

//the community one would be read-only for those who've not been invited to join.
I've thought of that a few times, but I really like the 'benefit of the doubt' kind of setup because it *is* so inclusive. I reckon there are a few things that could be implemented to reduce the effect of idiots and trolls - restrict them to the bar, restrict the number of posts they can make in any given day, teina's already said that bozo lists are in the works..

Also it's far less maintenance - imagine if the Morse Media guys had to approve every single person for entry into the community forum...it's a whole lot of work to restrict the movements of what amounts to just a small handful of people.

//i recken a reecomendation could be good, eg my mate

sounds a bit too much like friendster.

there are some people you can tell from the offset that they will be valuble

> I really think there ought to be two forums; one for the general public, and one for the "community", and the community one would be read-only for those who've not been invited to join.

great in theory, but who has the time to manually invite 10,000 users?

I think it could be done either by invitation or application. especially considering that someone important is sure to be forgotten when the big kids' forum is set up. it could just be done with the caveat: "if you were forgotten, it may or may not have been intentional. click here to apply..." or something like that.

...and I can't imagine it would be TOO much work if you're just really selective about who gets in.

so far hes doing rather well for a new comer.
hows this then

the public forum has a top 35 (to accomodate quality and the jotuns of the world)
the people seen contributing well here get invited to joing the private forums.

I reckon just scratch the top 25 altogether. No complicated maths or systems.
I'm sure it's been mentioned that a points system is on the way. Where people's logins/comments are rated by other users. & can be blocked by individual users? I think the latter was just an idea.

//I'm sure it's been mentioned that a points system is on the way. Where people's logins/comments are rated by other users.

Interesting...but scary...

I get the impression that it is more than an idea

//I'm sure it's been mentioned that a points system is on the way. Where people's logins/comments are rated by other users

yeah that was something tossed about in chat by that palm fella as a replacement for the topic 25.... I know it scared me at the time

personally i wouldnt be botherd rating other users performance, and it would kill alot from the forums people not posting things in fear they might become a 1

It has been mentioned on Help or About Us too. I didn't like it at the time, but there needs to be some way to get rid of the Jotuns & Libelles & Lcjmacos.

sorry mega, you are right.

Aw, Libelle's ok. Jotun's fun to hassle.

Whoops, did I say I was off to bed? OK, now I am.
