Is New Zealand hip-hop too influenced by American hip-hop?

I think that America is of course the main influence & much respect for that. Originality of course lies heavily on the individual. Inspiration would more likely be the word to describe the connection.
I would say that thanks to American hiphop we have a base for our unique talent that lives on our shores but we do have a tendency to use those overseas influences in regard to how we deliver.
As an aspiring rap artist myself, I tend to lean on to certain influences to help me out with my style & of course I would consider myself an original because I create how I put myself across the way I like to and it goes for all other artists..they listen to certain artists to get ideas as well so pretty much its all being inspired from the class leaders & delivering from a kiwi status, kiwi background, kiwi heritage & hence this makes us original in our music. Hiphop is growing & more & more time goes by will lead to more & more souped out hiphop'ers in our country..Check Scribe..he's the man..Mareko..he's pretty bad with his delivery but we must alwasy endeavour to keep delivering & balance the kiwi style that we are.

i think we need more banging gangstas in new zealand.

Maybe, depends what you mean..
We gangsters in our own way..good gangsters..we like to clone that we are but not for real.
We dress like them in hard ways but for real we're not crims.

I think what your saying is totally true and pretty keyd in to tha issues of NZ hiphop, hope you make it as a rappa you seem intelligent enuff to. ps I think scribe is one of tha best things to come out of the nz music scene in ten years Mareko is a namedropper but you gotta lov im.

Peace. Im working on some songs today actually. Too worked out but its gonna come into effect under an alias AKA known to the scene but strictly undercover from this site.

i thought it a bit weird how the pollster choice to mention Scribe and Nesian Mystik - by my reckoning, their two of the acts that sound the least like US based/derived hip-hop.

Definitely. Was talking with my lil brother yesterday & I asked him if he like Mareko, he was such a tiny hater saying he was 'wannabe' which is kinda true..hate to say..but he does rap to the influences of Wu Tang hardcore & a few other gangster related rappers. Nesian Mystik are pretty awesome for sure..seeing that they have created their own kiwi original style..Way to go to Scribe..We lovin his shit.

I don't think Mareko sounds american at all, or is a wannabe gangsta. Have a listen on the album and you can definately tell a difference between him and his USA colabs. Its his booming voice and battlestyle spit that makes people think he's a wannabe... Where really its how good he is right now that he could pass off as a non-new zealander.

His album is an excellent hiphop album that eats up Scribes album all over the show. Give it a listen.

I wouldn't exactly describe Mareko as a wannabe..rather just another player in the field..He's pretty cool & I love his song to do with him bussing into town..reminds me of my bussing days..He's phat man & I still commend him all the way, I just find him totally influenced by Wu Tang which is awesome cos he does have his own style just a bit too inspired but nothings wrong with that aye!

//totally influenced by Wu Tang

depends who you mean in the Wu. i mean, they are a very very psychedelic band in places, very unconventional. not that i've listened to Mareko closely, but i don't think he's that out there, in terms of subverting any rap conventions.

DDDDDUUUUUDDDEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! how could you even begin to think that scribe and nesian were sounding too american gangsta??? hav you ever ven listened to their songs?. In nesians h.i.p.h.o.p song they totally denounce American gangsta hiphop Nz rappers are way too real, when was tha last time you heard scribe or awa drop a line like "thos my niggas fo' sur" (a grat song by obie which is gangsta rap) scribe could not sound gangsta as he has P-money for a Dj who mixes grat beats that are just too good to b american, i think almos ne newzealander can relate to at least one of scribes songs and say hey yea i kno just what you mean! but could the average nzeda relate to something by fifty cent? i dont think so. not 2 mention the last song on nesian mystiks album which I cant rememba the name of (spirit??) is just so newzealand / polynesian its not funny, do you think you would ever hear the lyrics "we do remember Parihaka" in an american gansta rap song? Heelll nnoo!!. that song makes me shiver. Nesian mystik keep it so real to nz Just tha fact that they mention such a symbolic and integral (though not well known) issue of Nz's history like Parihaka proves just how uniquely new zealand they are. Not 2 mention their jus boys from south auckland doing there thing.

the person who started this poll pick the wrong names to make examples of!!! I mean Nesian Mystik!! Scribe. I mean sure some tracks you might get a American Twang, but other than that not really.

what we need in new zealand is people that what to be themselves and some fucken clone of some pissed off person.

well yeah nz hip hop is influenced by american hip hop, thats where it began, but i dont think its to much, like other people, all new zealanders want to keep it Original but to hard to escape, due to music relation (beats and Lyrics), in the end it sort of sounds the same. but stuff were putting out is pretty original in its own right, like the pacific sounds tropical and full of Phatness

All Hip Hop music is obviously gonna sound kinda alike, cause its all hip hop. NZ make the best hip hop music and they do it with originality and style ;) They make it piss!

u rekon 2 american.well nt scribe n neasian but i rekon dei hamo and savage
r turnin in2 american wanna bees.str8 up.

As a struggling Hiphop artist I find that most new zealanders are very critical of local artists. I cant speak for everyone but I am influenced by american hiphop and incorporate certain elements of their sound in my own music, but with the american juggernaut pumping out different so many different types of hiphop its hard to put anything out without getting labelled! If you Rap fast youre a wannabe bone thug or twister. If you try to harmonize youre a wannabe nelly. If you try to rap off beat youre a wannabe Wu. If you try to get "lyrical" youre a wannabe Nas, Jigga. The only way to avoid it I see is to continually mention new zealand historical events which will ultimately become boring if everyone does it.I think the Label is gonna be unavoidable until we can really find a sound that is uniquely Aotearoa, has massive comercial appeal, and just something that we all can embrace as a nation. Big ups to Con psy! I love your sound dude! Much respect to Juse1 and The Wanderers also setting a high benchmark to follow. Dei Hamo, Im not a fan but much respect for filling an obvious need in the market. I hope to some day emulate the success you have all acheived. Thank you for reading my sob story and I hope I havent offended too many of you. Sorry I didnt mean for it to be this long!

//but with the american juggernaut pumping out different so many different types of hiphop its hard to put anything out without getting labelled!

Never thought of it that way before, good point. Mind you, I suspect Trillion has a good tip for sounding uniquely Aotearoa... ;)

Well yeah some NZ hip-hop stars are influenced by american hip-hop. But those original hip-hop artists eg. King Kapisi, Scribe and P-money are true because they really made their own music style which came from thier roots and culture. But others who have just came into the game see those famous rich gansta rappers over in the U.S and think well if i spit my shit like them that would be the best way to get to my future. So the only way to keep NZ hip-hop different from american hip-hop is start with the grounding and become a real original artist.!!
