Depends on the band. For kiddie/mainstream ones like 8 Foot Sativia, Rubicon, Zed, Elemeno P etc, it's kinda funny that they alienate their fans/target audience by having R18 gigs.
But I'd far rather see a band in a bar, being able to have a drink or 2, without having a little mosh of say under 15s. So screw the kids. Being over 18, it is my right to be smug about not missing out on seeing music.
Agreed. Knowing your audience is as easy as finding out if most of them are under 18 or not, that can't be too hard. Better turn-outs usually mean better gigs.
I'm no expert, but I think the door-charge thing is one of the biggest turn-offs to under 18's, which makes it hard for a band to budget for an all ages show and probably means getting sponsorship of some sort.
I have alway thought that there should be some type of pass for under 18 that have a genuine love of music, so they can go anywhere......... or a wee locked playpen so they can't bother other punters or get to the bar
How would one proove this genuine love of music? A playpen would be cute though. Hehe. Poke teh kiddies through the bars. No, but seriously... Even courtyards of bars could be good for that.
i think its probably fair the bars keep their r18 status, but maybe bands that come should consider playing at a venue for all ages!? it cant be the best missing out on seeing your favourite band coz you arent of age...
It depends on a bands target audience but generally most bands will have fans from a range of different ages so I think bands touring NZ should do R18 shows and all ages shows, this way people under 18 dont complain about not getting to go and people over 18 dont complain about having stupid imature teens around and not being able to buy alcohol. Although for large venues i think it does kinda suit to do all ages gigs with a restricted licensed area.
In my opinion, and also from personal experience, I think the main thing is that there simply isn't enough all ages venues for bands to play frequently, the ratio is of bars to all ages venues is weighed generously in bars and R18 venues' favour. I live on the North Shore of Auckland, and to put on an all ages gig up here, you need to go to councils to get permission to play on stages in parks and stuff, or hire out club halls, and then you need to go and organise everything else to go along with it, such as advertising, sound and lighting, support bands, and helpers. It's a huge task, so these kind of all ages concerts are left to local organisations - such as the North Shore Youth Council - to organise, and because of the effort involved, are put on maybe say 4 times a year?
Hey cher man its simon from slipping tongue... i didn't know you were on here? Anyway... yeah its a pain in the ass trying to organise all ages gigs. Over 18 year olds wont come to the gigs if there are little kiddies running around and the under 18 year olds are all fashionable little shits and say stuff like 'I'M NOT PAYING 3 WHOLE DOLLARS TO WATCH A CONCERT, ESPECIALLY WHEN THERES NO SMOKING COZ I LOVE SMOKING COZ SMOKINGS SO COOL COZ IM A COOL SMOKING SMOKE OF A SMOKE SMOKE SMOKE OOOOOOO SMOKEEEEEE'
Definately depends on the band, but some r-18 gigs are needed. I mean maybe sometimes the artist wants to play to a mature audience that isn't going to be interupted every second with "you've got a nice arse" or "I love you". I snuck into an r-18 gig when I was a wee lass. I felt a big difference in atmosphere, the band was just able to walk around, have a few beers do their thing without being mobbed.
it sucks when kids can't get into shows, because quite often they are much more keen and devoted than so-called adults.... so many older people just sit around a the bar, at least kids tend to get into the music a lot. . .
it is always a tough call on whether to have r18 or all ages - having shows outside bars does take more effort, but it also opens up your bands or Dj's or other stuff to a much larger audience than those that would hang out at a bar/venue
some of the best shows i have been to have been all ages (and some of the worst)...
on another tip, perhaps if teenagers were able to get into venues and bars a bit more often, they wouldn't hang out on the street or crash their cars or generally fuck themselves up quite so much...
but a band that brings in 25 people who then just sit at the bar is a much better band from the venue's POV than a band that brings in four times that amount of kids who then don't buy anything.
I used to think it was shit how most of the all ages venues sarted dissapearing but then i turned 18. I still don't like pub pits though everyone has a fucking drink and there are some drunk dicks in there. ohwel all for the mosh
