All these recent topics suck! WHY?

Has everyone gone a bit serious for the new year..Where is everybody?
Why is everyone on a power trip?

Forums: The Bar,

Get off your high horse. As you're so fond of telling everyone else, if you don't like it then don't read it.

Get your facts right cos it aint all the recent topics..its more or less - less than that..

I haven't read it..they suck..DER!! Read the post name yeah..thats it..
Its just it doesn't seem so inviting or enticing enough to spark comments.

//Its just it doesn't seem so inviting or enticing enough to spark comments.

I'll toast to that...

Sorry Man! It must be me. At work got hardly jack to do. Phonecalls..what else? No stimulating topic teasers..I guess it aint my day..SORRY!

Thanks for the encouragement,
After a long break of not starting topics, I have given it a go, I thought my romance topic was just as cute as your pick up lines, and my advice topic was funny......... and had a very interesting spin off in that whole trained v untrained thing.
The main board has some extreamly interesting stuff going on, as young noisy has said "purple"

but yes if you aren't foaming at the mouth about BDO... but gee I can't moan too much, what with all my cusp posts and all...
all will turn to normal in a week or so

purple???....can someone illuminate me.
Tinky winky??
Purple patch< what does this mean?

Its not the topic really as I've just thought about it..its mainly the remarks made that gives it a poor report I guess (for me anyway..)..You're topics have been awesome..pretty much the stuff we like to talk about..like I said, its probably just me & the absence of all the cool posters thats getting to me.

The Collins English Dictionary

purple patch - noun

(1) so called: purple passage
a section in a piece of writing characterized by rich, fanciful, or ornate language

(2) slang
a period of success, good fortune, etc.

...which isn't quite the sense I was using it in (more of a mix of both definitions really). I've always used it in the sense of 'a period of high quality writing'. Americans say 'purple prose', I think, with the UK holding onto 'purple patch'.

//the absence of all the cool posters thats getting to me.
God, someone hold me back.

//its probably just me & the absence of all the cool posters thats getting to me.

What!? When my name is last post column I know you feel that funny feeling in your tummy. I'm the coolest mofo no doubt. Infact I'm so cool, I'm god damn ICE COLD!

Thanks for the Purple Clarity....
Here i was thinking a purple patch was a sea of green planted in a nutrient deficient paddock, then there was that purple pills thing the D12 did & someone telling me that purple was the international Gay colour & I never got over why tinky winky had a handbag & why there is a shop in hamilton called purple patch that on my last walk past was all about quilt stitching & needlework.
But thanks that clears things up nicely for me. .

The absence of the cool posters doesn't necessarily mean you guys..I meant on certain particular topics..some people are not posting & never did I mean you guys especially my rivals..No..Love your comments...Like I said man..its just a me-thing today..not my day to come on line really..SORRY..dont get all upset..you guys are the shit.

i'm interested to know who the cool posers are?

of course i ment posters

apparently so, but i shouldnt have replied, your not cool enough.
(hahaha)

Everybodys cool up in here, you for sure..No names are to be mentioned cos then that would make everyones replies & comments biased rather than opinion based once I've made a comment..But no..Can i just say it was one of those things I posted just to spark up some excitement around here. How about a game?

so this is a popularity contest now??

purple means good. last used in this sense late in the 19th century. except of course "purple prose".

Purple being a colour only available to the wealthy (before synthetic dyes) and so denoting good fortune. Hence purple = good ...

Cloth dyed a purple color, or a garment of such color;
especially, a purple robe, worn as an emblem of rank or
authority; specifically, the purple rode or mantle worn by
Roman emperors as the emblem of imperial dignity; as, to
put on the imperial purple.

Thou shalt make the tabernacle with ten curtains of
fine twined linen, and purple, and scarlet. --Ex.
xxvi. 1.

3. Hence: Imperial sovereignty; royal rank, dignity, or
favor; loosely and colloquially, any exalted station;
great wealth. ``He was born in the purple.'' --Gibbon.

sing aboop boop aboopa lopa lum bam boom

Stu, I had heard the story of the purple fabrics, but not the "He was born in the purple" quote before.
I'm picking this is similar to the "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" & some story I had heard about blue bloods being so, because of the amount of colloidal silver the wealthy were exposed to resulting in an almost blue apprearance.
(Could be poppy cock, oops now I'm thinking about Bill Hicks big purple vien dick joke.)

As a youngster i was exposed frequently to the one eyed one horned flyin purple people eater, a single my mother thrashed continuously at party's. However thats another story & proabably more suited to Over the teacups section of the womens weekly.

I think blue-blood came about mainly because the toffs avoided the sun like the plague. Only thse who had to actually work for a living went out in the sun. As a result the aristocrats had extremely fair skin and the blood vessels just under the skin appeared blue (as they do on all of us with fair skin) hence blue-blood implied fair skin whihc implied didn't have to work which implies aristocrat ... at least that is one story.

These days the wealthy spend all the time getting a tan to suggest that they have nothing better to do than lie around on their yacht as they cruise from resort to resort ...

lcajmo - was it not you who started the battle rapping thread?

Have you ever heard the saying "Size Aint Shit"
not that I'll mess wit you..

// Americans say 'purple prose', I think, with the UK holding onto 'purple patch'.

Noizy, you must've successfully blocked out EMF's "classic hit" 'Unbelievable'. They were from some forest in England somewhere.

The things you say, your purple prose just gives you away
The things you say ... you're unbelievable!

Actually more likely you never knew what the lyrics said...

The weirdest part of that song was the sample of the guy going "what the fuck was that?" which played over and over throughout the track, on radio and TV, uncensored. I presume it's cos no one could figure that bit out either. :)

//The things you say, your purple prose just gives you away

AACHHHH!! You've just solved one of my long-standing life mysteries. I was always trying to work out what the hell those words were...

// you must've successfully blocked out EMF's "classic hit" 'Unbelievable'

must have. my younger days covers band used to play that song. good bassline. made a nice change of pace amongst the dozen or so pixies covers...

actually, EMF were a bit under-rated I reckon.

I always thought it was "homophones" - which as it happens, is a word that doesn't actually exist, but I imagined it to mean "words that sound the same". Silly me.

Speaking of quirks of the English Language, isn't purple prose generally considered to be a BAD thing? Like using descriptive words just for the sake of them, and using too many to try and make yourself seem cleverer? All my English teachers always told us off for using "purple prose".

// actually, EMF were a bit under-rated I reckon.

I dunno if I should put this in writing, but same. I guess if you were in the UK, surrounded by all that "Madchester" fallout they might've seemed pretty tryhard?

Being a complete freak, I only had their second album, the one with no hits. :) I used to thrash that on my walkman on the way to school...

Actually, probably the sign of being a complete freak is that I debated with myself buying a compilation called 'Red Hot & Dance' for several years (no exaggeration) solely because it had a Brian Eno remix of 'Unbelievable' on it which I hadn't heard.

The thing never seemed to show up in record stores where they'd let you listen to albums before buying. Bah.

// homophones

I use the word in conversation (haha, has this strayed from that topic where Heather & Aka were trying to out-geek each other?) and was taught it at university as part of an introduction to Linguistics. So I reckon it does exist, and it means exactly what you thought.

And yeah, purple prose is a bad thing, but apparently one meaning of purple patch isn't. Not that I'd seen the phrase until Noizy used it in this topic.

Ahhh, it was just Dictionary.com that was lying to me then.

Also, Yay, I think that this topic has managed to be redeemed, with no thanks to its creator. This is what I love about NZm. Well, one of the many things anyways.

No thanks to me, we're on a different level.
Suck the suckness out..you always manage to get by with a great job.
