Esra Dekan

This is the general discussion forum for Esra Dekan

Forums: Bands,

Welcome everyone to the Esra Dekan Forum! Hopefully you've seen the video of "All Right" on JuiceTV so you'll have an idea of the mellower side of our musical style. We're about to start the sale of an album of live tracks "York St. Sessions" - you'll be able to get them from our gigs in the near future (hopefully by our Friday and Saturday shows @ the Empire this weekend).

http://www.esradekan.com ]

Actually, it won't be called "York St Sessions" - it will be called something else. That simply where it was recorded!

Jon

Good to see you guys getting up and running, email me I may have a gig for you down the line here in Wngtn. monkeypuzzle@paradise.net.nz

Cool bro - I've been reading your comments on some of these forum and it seems we share many ideas when it comes to the realities of music promotion. Wish we'd taken more time to chat when we played that gig wit' us fullas!

Im pretty sure it was Esra Dekan playing at Furneaux Lodge in the Marlborough Sounds on New Years 03/04, i recognised them from the photos on thier site and a music video i saw on C4.
I dont think they played any of thier own music, only covers, but they rocked anyway.
Keep its up guys

Actually, my friend, we did play a few originals early in the night and one later on I think. But thank you for the positive feedback. Always much appreciated! Bass player Dekan.

You guys ROCK! I saw you at the Empire in January and me and my friends had the best night in ages. Wouldn't mind hearing some of your songs, guess I'll have to wait for the album. Voted for you on Juice also!

Are you playing there again?

Yeah - leading two lives at the moment! Empire on Waitangi Friday (we always chuck a few of ours in!) and Masonic on Friday 13th (hopefully everyone won't just go to the cricket...). That's our official CD launch gig thing.

Cheers for voting! Might see you on Friday?

The other day I saw an Esra Dekan video clip on C4. I really enjoyed it, but unfortunately, I am destined to hate the band, because they stole my (non exsistent) band name. For years I've been saying to myself, and anyone who would listen "When I finally get around to starting my band, we are going to be called Dekan" Esra Dekan took it one step further, made it better, and now I can't have a band, because I can't think of another name.

Seriously though, liked the song. =o)

what can we say but sorry. We did get someone on our website called Esra Yriah though...

Ha! I feel that so deeply... I had a few great ficticious-band names lined up myself. Unfortunately all of them reeked of 80's metal for some reason.

Perhaps the next step will be to stop spelling things backwards and get downright offensive in a band name.

Like #*!^s r#*^t for example.

I have a mate whos band name is Mottob. There must be something in the tequila we drink.

All remember...

We, Esra of the Dekan, will be playing a fine selection of covers and maybe a few originals this Friday night (Night of Waitangi) from 10 pm till 2 the next morning (stamina...). Come along and we may even sell you one of our BRAND NEW CD's!!! If they are ready and available they will be $20! Otherwise you may have to wait some more...

Hey ya!!!

How did your NZ Idol audition go Jeremy? Are we gonna see you on TV next Sunday?!

Well, I may turn up on Sunday. Paul Ellis told me that I murdered the end of a song...

I didn't cry though...

CD LAUNCH!!

THIS FRIDAY THE 13th!!

MASONIC TAVERN, DEVONPORT!!

WOO HOO!!

We can't stop giggling.

haha, i was thinking about what esra dekan means and i noticed that its "naked arse" backwards, pretty good name if you ask me, keep it up

The name definitely seems to polarise people - it's either love it or hate it.

Wicked gig downstairs at the Masonic last night. It's a good venue but tends to be out of the way for our crowd. Thanks heaps to everyone who turned up to support us and the CD launch - especially the likes of Darren coming from Pakuranga!

Now THAT'S commitment.

Drummer Wes Dekan is off to London with his show "The Sons of Charlie Paora", we'll be doing a fair bit of writing and promoting the CD until our next show in the Empire garden bar (our songs - not covers!!). We have some huge plans for this night - but more news as it comes to hand.

Still giggling like little girls about the whole CD thing.

Just letting you all know that we have started working on some new songs and that things are looking interesting. We will miss Wes terribly, but hey, he got to say the F word on Nightline somewhere between 5 and ten times. It was hard to keep count...

Evening - go to http://www.muzic.net.nz/artists/666/readreview/3252.html to read a review of the "Studio Sessions" album.

It's great to read an opinion from someone other than our friends!

Come see the boys at The Poenamo on Thursday 29th April from 9pm - part of the Live and Local series of gigs...

Playing with Defekt and Poodlefaker. Anyone know anything about these bands?

Hey naked arse. you know my friend zoe dedes. well shes sorta related to one of u dudes or summin.. cool eh!

Related to us? Which one?

ur manager andy's step sista

Ah Andrew. He's everywhere that guy. Everywhere at the same time. You know, I've never actually seen him finish a meal?

But that's another story. Still tryin to find out something about the bands we're playing with next Thursday!

hey, what kinda music do u play? cos iv neva heard u guys b4...

We're a 5 piece rock band - people have compared us to a few bands having heard our album. I reckon kind of a Pearl Jamish / Live-esque / U2y sound but poppier and with harmonies.

Hope that's not too vague. c4 and Juice have both got our video "All Right" which is reflective acoustic rock, if you wanna vote for it.

nice... ill keep my eye out 4 it, and thanx 4 replyin' : )

Ah yes. The Dekan are looking forward to unleashing their respective collective dragons at the Poe on April 29. That is one day after my birthday. I look forward to unleashing my 25 year old dragon. Quarter century and all that.

I might keep my dragon to myself, I think. Ya can't go round unleashing your dragon willy nilly.

It's not polite.

POE GIG CANCELLED!!

According to the promoters Intergalactic Live, The Podium has cancelld this week's gig scheduled for Thursday 29th April.

The boys are pretty disappointed about it as we were looking forward to playing for the first time since Wesley returned from the UK. We'll contact those of you who bought tickets soon to organise paying you back!

Now, where's that forum about the lack of professionalism in local music?

Hey everyone

Just wanted to say hello and get our name back on the front page again. Wes is here as well. He is a red head. Yes. A drumming ninja.

// He is a red head. Yes. A drumming ninja.

surely you mean a drumming ginger?

Wes the Ginga Ninja - you know we only got him because a certain band (who shall remain nameless...) were FOOLISH enough to let him leave.

My jedi mind tricks worked.

They will surely pay for their lack of vision.

By the way... "Hugo" from the album is available for listenation on www.cokefridge.co.nz in the Band Bios section.

Word.

I kind of like it but not like you though.

Or is it?

Esra Dekan backwards is naked arse.

http://www.schnapped.com ]

haha zoink. that cracks me up

Esra Dekan LIVE at the Control Room, Queen St, Auckland...

That felt far too professional and efficient...

Pfffffffft. I farted... :)

PFFFFFT. That one was rotten.

Out of my esra.

Who are Esra Dekan anway? That is a question we should all ask ourselves.

Jeremy, are you the only one having a damn conversation here? : )

Yes I am Jeremy

Yes I am.

Esra Dekan - Studio Sessions
a review on Esra Dekan submitted by jono (www.muzic.net.nz)

The debut release from Auckland 5 piece rockers Esra Dekan, Studio Sessions, is a hidden gem. Though not a mainstream force as yet, Esra Dekan have struck gold with this diversified 13 track album.

Their ability to move from heavy rock to tranquil bliss effectively within a song brings back memories of Smashing Pumpkins in their prime.

"Studio Sessions" starts with avengeance with two rock tracks titled "Last Chance" and "Hugo". Both tracks feature catchy intro's and compulsive drum beats. Lead singer Jon Pickford's vocal talents are clear for all to hear. "Hugo's" dark bass gives the listener a forlorn outlook.

"Start Again" heads off in a completely new direction and gets the blood pumping with with quick fire beats and riffs before the bar is raised with two beautiful ballads. "Girl next door" is full of wonderful lyrics and made all the better by amazing backing vocals. "All right" is more of a darker melody with heavy bass that gives it a dour flavour. This track stands out more than any other on the album.

From rock to unabashed beauty, "Studio Sessions" then moves a sharp right to pop rock with "Watch the Clock". This track is pop rock at it's finest combined with melodic tendencies. The chorus is the sort of thing that you would sing in the shower, and also one of those songs that gets stuck in your head.

The listener is taken on an emotional rollercoaster when listening to "As Sweet As". Succulent lyrics that tolead to a reflective mood about the one that got away.

Another sharp change of direction sees the Ben Harper like "Heal Your Mind". Relentless strumming and Harper-like riffs made this track a standout.

In the final track, "Justify", Esra Dekan have recreated the broken record effect with short, frenetic guitar punctuated by bass.

Esra Dekan are knocking at the door. It's not just the collective skill of each musician, or the vocals talents of Jon Pickford. The single thing that stands out is the backing vocals.

Even though 2004 has just begun, this is the best album I've heard this year, and will take some beating. I just hope that the radio stations will do Esra Dekan justice.

Popular Auckland band Esra Dekan are set to resume their competitve music careers at the World Battle of the Bands this Wednesday night at the Kings Arms Tavern, Newton.

Confident of bettering their efforts of 2001, when they placed third in the North Auckland regional final after only a few months of training, Esra Dekan feel that the hard work needs to be done up front with singer Jon Pickford before the classy backline of Wesley Raymond Dowdell can be allowed to show his fast hands.

"It'll be a game of 4 bands, we'd expect to see the forwards buzzing around the ball like electrons round a nucleus" says guitarist Daniel Merrill, looking forward to yet another appearance in the Esra Dekan colours.

Another pleased to get the call up was bass player Jeremy Pickford, who had problems with the bands judiciary after alleged incidents with the product "Deep Heat" and his privates. "Yes, it's true that I've had trouble focussing in the past - but that is the past. I want to see you on your baddest behaviour...". at which point the interview was interuppted as J. Pickford was called away for a dose of ritalin.

On the injury front, concerns over the fitness of Paul Normington have been allayed after he complained of cravings earlier in the week. "I just get really hungry, all the time for strange foods" said Normington, wolfing down a KFC Party Pack with a side of golden syrup and gherkins. The winger will be fed intravenously during Wednesday night's performance.

Whatever the result, talk of potential biff between bands members on stage make this match a must-see.
