// Peter Gabriel - Come Talk To Me

I had a listen to 'Mercy Street' off 'So' again the other day. That track has such amazingly beautiful percussion... very subtle and slowly developing.

I like Gabriel's lyrics most of all, but he should be commended for his successful incorporation of "world music" styles into a more western "pop music" framework. For instance, Come Talk To Me features bagpipes, African percussion and rock guitar - as strange a combination as that may seem, it works very well.

Other such artists who manage pull the whole "world music" thing off well include Paul Simon (Graceland, Rhythm Of The Saints), Cornershop and Savuka.

Have to say the lyrics from 'Us' made me want to chunder, and cast his earlier albums in a bad light for me. I guess it was that whole thing he was raving about having been through a lot of group therapy, and was sporting the bad suit and pony tail combo... I'm sounding like a bitch, but he reminded me of Tim Robbins' character in 'High Fidelity'. :P

But full credit to him for his sincere support of a whole lot of good stuff from outside the West. I think he did a bloody good job of mixing things up too. I presume you've heard 'Passion'? That's pretty impressive in that regard, I reckon, though I never saw Last Temptation of Christ so not sure how it works as a soundtrack.

//Have to say the lyrics from 'Us' made me want to chunder, and cast his earlier albums in a bad light for me.

The whole "therapy" thing? Fair enough. Still, Blood Of Eden is poetry.
