What guitar amp do you think is the best you have ever heard?
I am interested to know what amps are favoured by the NZ music community and why. I'll start :
I have a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier
Good :
It's loud enough to never get lost on stage or in the mix or anything.
It has so much gain that you don't even need to turn the gain all the way up like on most amps, even for ultra death heavy metal.
The clean is really Fender-clean, not Marshall clean where it always sounds a bit dirty.
It has a lot of tonal versatility, with three seperate channels (two distortion channels, one clean) and like eight different control knobs for each channel.
It can do everything in rock, from scratchy indie guitar sounds to standard dirty rhythm, clean picking, slightly breaking up rhythm, rock overdrive, all the way to as heavy as you please Drop D palm mute hell tone.
Cons:
It can sound a bit "hi fi", as if there is too many high freq. bands being produced.
My cabinet seems to be a bit overly bassy, so that I have to turn the bass down to about 9 o'clock, but some I have played don't have this problem.
The cabinet is so fucking heavy. I can move a Marshall on my own no problems, but this thing is something altogether different.
It doesn't sound that great until you turn it up so loud that you need earplugs, which completely fuck the tone you hear....So you can only play it for a little while before your ears start to ring.
It costs too much. Mine was $6400 all up. That's like two good combo amps.
In summary :
In retrospect, I probably wouldn't have bought it at the price I paid. I play hard rock and it has pretty much all the sounds I want, but it's not worth $6400. I played a Mesa Boogie Maverick combo the other day ($3900) with two channels, and it would be easily as good as my amp, but possibly even cooler at high volume as it is pure class A. I always wanted a Dual Rectifier and now I have one, but it is a bit of a letdown, at least at the moment. I am going to take it in and have it looked at (I think the speakers may have a problem in the low end) and maybe that will help, but overall, for $6400 it should be the only amp I will ever own, and it won't be. Maybe it's the tubes, maybe the speakers, who knows, maybe it's just not that great....

Marshall 2550 is one of the Silver Jubilee Models. Switchable 25/50 Watts ... cool silver grey tolex and a scrummy "silver" front panel.

Hey, how about a little anonymity, anvil boy?
But....you're right. I guess you learn from your mistakes, and this has been a costly mistake. There again, it might be (and I am hoping) that actually it's just MY Mesa boogie that's a bit bung, not the brand itself. I've always thought they ruled until I owned one, so maybe it's just something's gone wrong on mine...
Also, I played a friend's Marshall TSL100 recently and boy oh boy is that a cool distortion - a meaty, characteristic marshall roar, but with more aggression than any Marshall I have ever heard. The clean on it is sort of lame though.
The only other amp I have really loved is a Fender Deville 4 x 10 combo. The clean got me all hot and bothered, but the distortion absolutely sucks. I guess you could buy a really hot distortion pedal like a G2D Classic or something for your dirty, but I believe an amp should have a good clean channel and a good dirty channel. Is that so much to ask? Like I said in my initial post, check out the Mesa MAverick combo - it's just amazing. Gorgeous clean, versatile dirty, and everything in between. And it's all Class A, baby.

You should just play the guitar and not worry about it so much. About 90% of what people notice is attitude and not tone, it simply doesn't matter that much.

I've been thinking about your "attitude is what matters" answer all day, and I agree, attitude is much MORE important than tone, but kick arse tone is nice to have, and I play better when I really dig the sound I am creating. That said, there are a myriad of amps I could have (and probably should have) bought for less than half what I paid that still would have done the job, rather than getting the Rolls Royce of guitar amps. Oh well, there are worse things than spending all your money on music equipment. Maybe I'll have an endorsement in a couple of years, and won't have to worry about buying amps at all. That'd be nice.

alot of people spend a shit load on flash gear and can't get it to purr

pick ups are important

"About 90% of what people notice is attitude and not tone, it simply doesn't matter that much."
What a pile of shit...... attitued? what like as in Extreme sports, fido dido and leopard skin pants....you don't flash gear to sound good...ad sometimes sounding shit is the greatest thing in the world...but you have to make good exciting music otherwise your just posturing.
Sure the 'vibe' of a band makes a big difference...but know some really great people in bands that i just don't like....their attitudes might be great, but if ya aint got good tunes ya aint got shit.

I tried out various amps (combinations of Laney, Marshall, 5150, Soldano) before buying my Peavy Ultra 100whead with a Marshall JCM900 quad. Apart from custom built amps by certain tech guru's I know - I haven't been able to get a better sounding amp (with and without effects)
Everyone bags Peavy but personally I like them a lot more than Marshall amps. I found it really hard to get a nice full heavy distortion with Marshall, always sounded weak.
Question for guitar people - guitar synth, I really like that sound. NIN, Kidney Thieves guitar sound, I think you have to get specialised pickups etc and they probably don't have them available for 7-strings... anyone know much about obtaining that sound??
Roland pretty much have this field to ...
Roland pretty much have this field to themselves. Unfortunately the special divided pickup that you whack on to your gat is six string only ... but really this is not a huge limitation ... you more than likely don't need to sample all seven strings anyway. On the older synths if you struck more than one string at a time the result was pretty awful. But check out the link below. I think there are some other models as well as the one shown.
As an aside I have a Roland GR 500 Guitar synth that I am fixing up for my nephew (he "inherited" it from my late brother) This is a first generation guitar synth that came complete with a special guitar. The guitar unit is an Ibanez copy of the trusty and extremely heavy Les Paul ... connected witha very nasty 30 way cable. You can certainly get some pretty funky sounds out of it and the sustain is just amazing thanks to the electromagnetic feedback that keeps the strings just ringing forever ... amazing ..

that's true - a good Peavy is just like a very very very loud Fender. same sort of sound - i have heard P copied Fender at some stage, but somehow or other the Peavy is a lot sharper and just plain loud. (i'm talking 'bout my experience with both bass and geetar amps).

Well here's a few of my faves-
Vox AC15: If you haven't heard Venture Electric's guitar sound yet, check them out. Wicked.
Fender Twin: Acidess, Fender amps are probably the best sounding amps on the planet, as well as...
Fender Deluxe Reverb: Nice sludgey overdrive from the 2 x 6V6 class A power amp... *drool*
Fender Bassman: Big boingy sound. The quintessential rock sound. Also the platform early Marshall amps were modelled on.
Mesa Boogie 'mark one': cause they sound a lot like the Bassman's do.
I don't own any of these amps, but I reckon they're the shiznit ;o) .
My own amps are Peavey 'Classic Series' amps which are basically Bassman look-a-likes, but they have a completely different tone. They can overdrive on the normal channel a bit like a Fender Twin but they're not anywhere near as loud, and the lead channel actually reminds me of a Marshall-style sound, maybe JCM 800. I think they're a verstaile, well priced amp. There are some 'hot-rod' schematics on the net for people who wan to modify these amps for different tones. If you want, you can remove a couple of tubes from the power amp of the 50 watt model and get it overdriving at a lower volume.
I also have a bunch of no-name, hand made tube amps that I found covered in dust in the back of my dad's shed. Awesome tone for guitar, although they were probably originally intended for PA or Hi-fi amplification. If you keep your eyes open you might find this sort of gear at second-hand shops etc and get a 'boutique' handwired amp for minimal $$$.
The roland jazz chorus is a pretty nice ...
The roland jazz chorus is a pretty nice amp too.
Not too sure that removing a couple of the tubes is a great idea if you want to knock back the output power of your amp ... it would depend a bit on the actual circuit but I could see this upsetting things a bit. Once again, depending on the circuit and the valves used in the output stage it is probably possible to add a fairly simple switch arrangement to achieve a similar result with less likelihood of causing damage. There is probably plenty of info on the old interwebby thingee about this kind of mod ... any competent tech with a decent knowledge of tube amps should be able to do it for you fairly quickly ... if that is what you want.
I am about to start building (once the parts arrive from the US) a little tube amp of my own ... just to play around with really ... only puts out around 5 - 7 watts but has a reputation for being loud enough to gig with in small venues and anything bigger you just mike it up and whack it through the PA.

Specifically, it requires removing the two outside el84's, and connecting your speakers to the 16 ohm jack instead of the 8 ohm jack... I had it running like that for quite a while, but it naturally was eating tubes much quicker...

dude, try running it on only 2 6L6 tubes instead of 4. this cuts your wattage in half.
Also try running in "spongy" mode: theres bugger all tonal difference, but again, its running at a reduced wattage.
my last trick for you is to engage the FX loop and use the loop master as an overall volume attenuator. the loops seem to do a good job of this.... of coarse depending on your amp this may give you a higher noise level.
anyways, all these tricks work for me on my dual rec Tremoverb, im not sure if theyre valid on the new 3 channel models.

beautiful clean tone . a wide variety of classic and modern sounding tones can be extracted from the gain channel. i've always preferred combos to stacks because the easier to move. Stacks are too loud for most settings. Most amps produced their best tone when driven relatively hard. This is a little difficult with bigger amps without popping eardrums. My amp is 60W and still a little loud. I usually don't get it up past about 4 (the dials go up to 12). I like this size amp though becuase it still offers sufficient. headroom. These amps retial for around $2600 - one of the best IMHO in this price bracket.
I play a fender thinline tele through it which sounds luuvly. I've also got a Les Paul Goldtop which breaks up the clean channel quite nicely at higher volumes.
A very versatile and dangerously sexual amplifier.

face to name, i never knew, heh - your guitar sound is great, i think i told you at the time, your semi-hollow fender is just like magic, there's a haunting emptiness there, while not actually being an empty sound
you guys have such a good overall sound though and the biggest strength you have is not in your equipment but in the way you play together, each member's uniqueness and versatility shines off each other's ... haha and i liked your funkariffic bass player's between-song slapping, nice.
i've been listening to your EP at least two or three times a week since i got it, i didn't tell you guys at the time because i already had the copied one joe gave me, but i liked it so much i bought a copy at your release gig :)
no headswells please! hope you've got the monkey in a place of pride, heh :)

As a bass player feel free to through rocks at me but isnt the guitar you are using the major determinent on an amps 'tonal value". a tele through a twin reverb vs a les paul through a marshall if you get my drift.whats better if you swap this config over?
It's all about what you want - there ...
It's all about what you want - there aren't right or wrong answers here, but the tele doesn't really make full use of the lower freqs. of the marshall, and the les paul would miss some of the subtlety of the fender's top end.
Generally, large, physically heavy guitars (les pauls being the obvious) with humbuckers will be the obvious choice for a rock band using a marshall, mesa (dual rec or triple rec) or whatever, for their full, warm tone, where a guitar with single coils is popular for more "sparkly", top end heavy (usually clean) playing (fender, vox amps). Of course, this is not always the case - sometimes bands will want a combination of the two, and might pair a fender with a marshall or something.
Single coil pickups have an emphasis on top end, humbuckers on bass/mids.
//isnt the guitar you are using the ...
//isnt the guitar you are using the major determinent on an amps 'tonal value"
Well that's part of it. Some amps are better at certain sounds than others, and certain sounds call for certain gear. I would say the biggest determinent on an amp's 'tonal value' is the imagination of the player.

Yeah one would hope so. I was attempting to highlight that some guitars "just go' with some amps.a guy I work with bought a tele 2 months back and through his johnson digital rig i thought thats not the way I remember the bite. put it through his wee fender amp and whoa!
Yes I know what you mean... I ...
Yes I know what you mean... I personally don't really dig those modelling amps as much as having one good amp with one good sound. Teles are very versatile, good at making many different tones, probably everything except aggressive/hi gain sounds (which I think is where The Deputy is coming from), but even then you've got Tom Morello from RATM/Audioslave using one and getting some very Sabbath-inspired tones... like I said, the imagination of the player is a big determining factor in what sounds 'good'.
Personally, I love the sound of a tele plugged into a Twin, or small tube amp like the AC15 or Pro-junior. Really accentuates that bell-like upper-midrange chime.

Its a modelling amp, with like half tube and half digital. It can mimic heaps of other amps sound almost to a t. Problem being the footswitch craps out every now and then, but apart from that its pretty mean. Heaps op presets and you can create all your own patches. Has a built in wah which isnt crap(surprisingly enough) and i has balls of steel.
Has digital delys, flanger, chorus, whammy, about ten different editable distortions and heaps more cool features. You can get a cab separatley if you really want it to crank.
I dunno. I like it heaps.
