The Cusp '04.......PHAT

Who was in Nelson for the cusp? What did you think? Will you be back next year? Count me in!!!!!

Forums: NZ Music,

I was there, and I will be back next year.. :)

To be honest there was a strange indifference when it came to this years Cusp.
I'm not sure if it was the line up of bands I had hardly even heard of combined with bands that I knew almost too well, or the slow realisation that we would not be having the mass reunion of nzmers from last year's cusp.
It was with a strange ambivalence, that I finally arrived at the park.

But the being there made all the difference.

There was an air of professionalism and polish around the production of The Cusp '04, which I suppose you can put down to lessons learned last year.
The cusp crew should be extremely proud of this years effort.. on a technical front the cusp'04 was far better than '03.. the sound system was crisp and clear, which is a feat in itself for an out door event.. the lighting looked flash as. Change overs were snappy and smooth and there where no perceivable hitches that could be put down to the crew.

Last year there where huge contrast in bands, ranging from the embarrassing to the brilliant. . the bands were a lot more consistent this year making it difficult to pick a single stand out for the event.

I am never to sure how to comment on the bands in this situation.. a smart one liner on each band in the same order as they appeared on the billing? A overview of all with a comment on the stand outs? Or a minimal .. there were bands there they played some music it was not horrible.......

OK once I work that bit out I'll be back...
To be continued.....

The stage looked stunning, the sound system was crisp, clear and full, which is a feat in itself for an out door event.. the lighting looked flash as. Change overs were snappy and smooth and there where no perceivable hitches that could be put down to the crew.

right then a wee bit late but.......

There were some bands they did play music and it was not horrible

I had a long talk with Daz a few weeks ago about the trickiness of planning an event like this, finding the right mix of sounds / bands and having them play at the right time of the day.... I made the analogy in my head that it must be similar to planning a set.. .... easing the crowd in, slowly building momentum towards the final climax.

The slow rhythms of dub in the afternoon were just perfect, lulling me into a lazy daydream
that even Autozamm and Falter couldn't pull me out of.
With the setting of the sun and the temperature dropping, the temperature on stage rose to a new level.
1QA took full advantage of a better time slot and a swag of new material, to start cranking up the atmosphere. I know I have said this before but it is worth saying again 1QA are getting very good at what they do, and this performance was defiantly one out of the cake tin.
How would you respond to a crowd in it's hundreds singing happy birthday to you......... by played the best set ever is how ! .... Mother Guru what can I say? They build on what 1QA started taking the crowd to a new high which Julia and co maintained perfectly
I had truly forgotten that I liked Fur Patrol, and when they played Man in a Box I nearly swooned... so dirty so menacing so so fine.
And then Fat Freddie's.. so comforting like a nice cuddle and a smoke to gently bring us back to earth

So yeah, I really did have my doubts that Daz had the mix quite right. But god I love being wrong.
The Cusp '04 was the perfect example of the whole being great than the sum of its parts.
If The Cusp Crew continue to raise the standard like this each year I am looking forward to what they are going to bring us for The Cusp '05.....

and yes I love the the headliners for '06 ;)

"Cusp 04 was brilliant! Sadly we only made it in time to catch the end of 1QA, all of Mother Guru and the first lil bit of Fur Patrol, so maybe my opinion is a tad biased ... but I loved what I saw! Thoroughly enjoyed having a big dance in a heaving mass of excited people :o) Of course my camera battery died in Mother Guru's opening song - leaving me a little bummed, but it was a blast anyway!
Unfortunately didn't see any evidence of fellow NZMers - tho I didn't know who / what i was looking for anyway ;op
To the 'Cusp crew - thank you for a wonderful night!
Will I be back next year? Damn Straight!

damn, we'll have to make a larger sign next time

or one that glows in the dark

or perhaps next year I'll just have to make the effort to get there in day-light hours so I can see it!

Cusp '04 was one of the best New Years i've had. The organisers did a fantastic job, big props to them, and to the public for coming along and supporting.

All the performers were of a massively high standard and i can envision good things in the future from all of them.

i'd never seen Koru, or Falter before they both blew my sox off.
Mother Guru sounded huge and played a really polished set.
1QA.....what can i say apart from GOOD CUNTZ(aka: help me out here)
Fur Patrol was o.k.
Fat Freddy's was Ace.

from what i've heard around the camp fire I can see the Cusp will be back and stepped up a notch.

anyways cheers Nelson, i love u.

Man you..
SSSuck!

What do u want? a proper review or something. geez. giz a couple of hours then.

O.K coz we're always waiting for Philthy we didn't make to the park for Lotek, gutted coz i'd heard their drummer waz amazing.

We arrived in time to see Wicked Draw, dub from what i remember, tight impressive set, some of the crowd was starting to get their groove on by this stage.

Next up was Kora, these dudes were dope. Dub made up of players from all around NZ. They played hard and tight with a huge stage presence and really impressed me.

Autozamm were up next, they played a really refined set characteristic of a band that has been in the studio for a while. catchy songs, tight set.

Next up- Falter. I loved these guys. young, energetic, and emo. Some really cool tunes, i can see good things happening for these dudes in the near future.

GND- Wellington Hip-Hop. had some phat beats particularily liked the last track, solid beats and m.c-ing.

1QA- sexy mutha fuggas.

Mother Guru- these dudes are always tight. These guys made me realise that the sound system was the bomb, it sounded huge, and Mo the birthday boy was going off as always on the vox.

Fur Patrol- Sounded professional. They were playing when the countdown happened then they played Lydia, the crowd luved it. I was on the Ferris Wheel- Choice!

Fat Freddy's Drop- sounded wicked from what i saw, but i was all over the place by that stage.

peace, out.

i missed Lotek as i was in the second car trip dropping us off at the cusp

Wicked Draw were the first band i saw, dubby, laid back, sounded good through the much improved sound system, great for a sit down and watch

i had heard Kora's song "politician" and enjoyed what i heard, although the volleyball was taking up most of my attention, great sound

Autozamm put in a solid set, i might have gone up and danced about, but three SKANKY girls were up by themselves waving around their arses, which left me feeling hesistant about going up in front of the stage. look out for their album coming out this year sometime, it should be good!!!

i saw Falter and damn are they catchy, i got a bit bored near the end of the set as they didn't seem overly interesting, i'd like to watch these guys develop, because they have a bright future coming up :)

having not heard much at all by GND, my expectations were low, but WOW they were good, talented even!!! with a female MC who really could rap and keep a note, they entertained for their 30 minute set, i definately will cath them more often in wellington

i moved up to the front of the non-existant crowd to see 1QA, and to my immense surprise, for the only time that day, the audience was mostly of the under 10 yrs crowd...
with little kids going politely mental, 1QA put in a strong set, showing their continued development as a band, seeing them play that day, i'll add their forthcoming album to my CDs to look out for list...
great band, great sound

Mother Guru...
what can i say???
i've never liked them much at all
till the 31st of december 2003
their show was so full of energy
and they were so intense, i jumped up and down and watched with awe
i even managed to start a showrt burst of crowd surfers
great fun

i've seen Fur Patrol many times, and they have a reputation with me as being either a good live band or a really bad live band, for the cusp they were good...
pulling out all the tricks you'd expect from a seasoned band, i enjoyed Fur Patrols set, i almost fell over when lydia was played, as they hardly ever play that song...
the crowd sung along and the night passed over to 2004
i enjoyed man in a box, which has always been a fav

Fat Freddy's Drop came on to chill the crowd down after fur patrol
they were great
getting the crowd that remained swaying and dancing to the vibes
sitting back thinking over the day, listening to fat freddies
i decided

i'm definately coming back to cusp '05'

the cusp was pantastic. beautiful, cloudless weather, wicked bands, cool people. overall a great atmosphere. i would definately go back for a cusp 05. cheers to everyone involved.

'pantastic' = good word!
