musical instrument shops - sexist?

it seems that every time i go into an instrument shop, i get treated like crap. i sometimes wonder if its because i'm a girl (or maybe i just give off bad vibes, man). do any other girls have this problem?

incident at the rock shop: i went in to purchase an item. they didn't have it in stock so i asked them if they could order it in for me. "sure" they replied, without even asking for my name. when i could see that they had no intention of taking down my details, i grabbed a piece of paper and wrote them down. i told the two guys who were "serving" me that they should call me once they have my item in store. "sure" they replied again, without even making the effort to pick my piece of paper up off the counter.

anyway, i ended up getting my item from somewhere else, and later on i even saw it at the rock shop again. they of course hadn't called me to let me know (no suprises there).

i get this kind of shit ALL THE TIME. i get snobbed so often at the rock shop that i've totally lost all interest in ever purchasing anything there again. i thought this kind of attitude might just be isolated to the tosspot staff at the rock shop, but the other day at a music works store, the staff completely ignored me as i looked at bass guitars. they served the males that came in while i was there, but never took a second look at me - until i started helping myself to the expensive guitars that is.

if this carries on, i'm soon going to run out of places to shop!

Forums: NZ Music,

I've never had any problems at the rock shop, but then I do know one of the staff. And I have never bought anything more significant than strings ....
at musicworks they've been okay but I was underimpressed when they sold me some really obscure electric strings that didn't fit my guitar .... I suppose that was my own fault though

under impressed. I like that.

Go to Go West Music. It's a great store, you get helped real well. On top of that you get to meet Garth from The Bleeders.

i do go there. brent from 8 ft used to work there too.

That Ph*ken sux to hear. You make sure that their staff help you next round no matter which shop you are step in. They aren't sexist the ones you dealt with - they seem to be just a bunch of cheap dickheads who think they've got it going on just cos they work behind the counter..Stuff them! Next time throw up a finger at their face & show them where to go ph*king bastards, clowns, wanna be models, bytch az geeks.

// they didn't have it in stock so i asked them if they could order it in for me. "sure" they replied, without even asking for my name.

You asked them if they could do it, and they said they could. If they were pay attention and cared about sales, they would have then asked you if you wanted them to order it. But as they didn't, it sounds like they were lazy bastards, rather than sexist pigs.

i find most fools that work at music instrument stores tend to be chumps.

but i guess id be a tad bitter too if i was some washed up rocker who never made it.

speaking of bad service, i think it must be in the contract that you have to be a fucking loser, and as unenthusiastic as possible to work at Real Groovy (save Justine, whos the rillist). I especially hate that short, bald, middleaged man with the goatee, and the fool with the handlebars who looks like he just stepped out of an 'Its Raining Men' video.

i'm sure if you worked in a warehouse full of cd's that you knew you had to find in the little drawers then run past the till, if you had to answer questions by the idiots about avril lavigne, or arrogant music snobs subjecting you to their wanky judgements, then you'd probably be unenthused at every dick that lined up keeping you away from home or fun also.

Thinking back, I can remember numerous times I've had shitty service from surly, hipper-than-thou staff at Real Groovy. But I've also had really good service from helpful, friendly staff. It's just that the bad experiences tend to be the ones that we remember and tell our friends about.

i've never had a problem with them, once they couldn't find a bargain bin cd i'd taken up but it didn't really bother me. i think the attitude is probably more along the lines of "if they seem to know what they're talking about then i'll play nice" than "pathetic human, it is I that controls the records you fool! ha ha ha!"

i think the only thing that sucks about groovy is what they give you for your second hand cds, it's not even worth selling them stuff.

I don't really mind the Real Groovers. Sure, some of them look as if they stepped out of a flop house, but the guys (and girls) that serve me are usually...nice.

Some of the people at the trades desk sneer at you, wheras others are nice and go "lemme guess - a whole bunch of promo cds?" before you've even managed to unzip your bag.

I just don't like the girl who worked at the counter who told me a story about how she wanted teh Charmed DVDs while I was buying Buffy. The two shows have nothing in common, lady! Sheesh.

I've never really encountered any probalems at the Trade desk. On one occassion they didn't take my Triple J compilation because they "had too many of them", but that's understandable, I guess. I admit that the trade in-credit is crap.

And just while I'm bitching about shop assistants, what's up with the people at Videon? If I want to rent Molly Ringwald movies, I damn well will, and you don't need to turn your nose up at me like that young man!

The middle-aged guy at the trades desk in the Wellington Real Groovy looks (and acts a lot) like the least friendly retail sales person in history. I don't even bother trading cds there any more. Slowboat normally offer you quite a bit more $$$ for your stuff and the staff are much friendlier.

ive never had a problem when i go into any music shops, not sure if because im male or because i ignore the 'please dont touch' signs and help myself

you need to do the pretty woman stunt- you know- walk back into the shop with fender blackface & original white falcon &c

Da ppl at the k-road rock shop are assholes. Maybe they just don't like gothy chicks prozaco? They are still quite friendly to me though, even though i alway act clueless...

oh yea, the ppl at rock shop botany are great ppl though. Wot did u buy anyway?

Yeah, the Botany rock shop is the best. Friendly assistance, and well-stocked to boot. Saves me from going to the music store in Howick for new strings.

this was not at an instrument shop, but another music shop, but i went in and asked if they had a cd in or if they knew when it would b released - but they didn't. so the guy offered to ask one of his friends 2 ask one of the guys in the band when it would b released and then get back to me. i thought, how nice. nice nice people. didn't take up the offer tho, should hav really...

its funny you bring this up, I was at the rock shop the other day looking at boss pedals with my brother and they went straight up to him, and actually said to me.. 'while he tries this out, you stand there and try to look interested' argh.. I replied 'I am interested' and he looked blankly and wandered away..

bought the pedal anyway $1200 dollar customer that almost went somewhere else. If you're are blinded by sexism at least don't be stupid enough to show it..

And this is why they keep doing it... bought the pedal anyway! Anyone who was seriously offended would have ordered the pedal somewhere and then written a letter to the manager letting them know exactly WHY they missed out on a $1200 sale!

I wasn't seriously offended, just pissed off at the attitude. I just got a $25 rock shop voucher in the mail something about being an appreciated customer and it has an email address asking for feedback on their service, I'll let them know via that.

thats kinda funny he he he, i guess the dude's probably the "wife in kitchen" sorta guy :P JUST KIDDING!!! I reckon what he did is pertty stink and sexist! Though wear u wearing preppy clothing at the time acidess?

when i lived in invercargill there were two music shops. the shopkeeper in one of them would hit on anything female that walked through the door, so i promptly stopped going there. the other one was a music works store. they were mostly pleasant to deal with, but there was one guy who worked there that was always very condescending to me. he also never fixed anything i brought in until i would complain to his manager that he was a lazy tosser. he didn't have problems fixing other peoples things, just mine. maybe he didn't like the crazy look in my eye. eeeeeeeeeeee!

I only go to Music Works, I might go to MasterPiece once a year but they have a shitty selection of gear, specally drums.
Trevor at Music Works is a good bloke, always nice to me even if I don't buy anything & given me great deals in the past, even let me swap a cymbal for a guitar once. If you're talking about Alec, yeah thats his personallity, he's cool too, just bit of a smart ass. He fixed little problems on my guitar with no trouble.

i suppose ur eyes are a lil scary like kristy's Martina.

alec is a tosser.

he can be at times, but I've got used to him now. He is a Pom so that might be why you didn't like him.

no.... i didn't like him because he was a tosser.

Im gonna tell him that!

you don't even know him jotun

fuck that.. Real Groovy staff are rudeass (apart from Justine, again)..

sheeyit.. where I work, customer service is paramount. i think they need to sort it out. fuckin 'cool music store' chumps.

Who is this Justine again? The one with the hip-bones?

anyone?

Fine, be like that.

i find the customers at cd & instrument shops are sometimes snottier than staff

off with you peasant!

no- for eg- im lookin thru cheap singles- pull out a sophie ellis bex single- coupla boys accross table-

boy- seb- what a pointless waste
me- a couple of her singles are ok
boy- ¿really?- that groovejet one tho- thats tha most pointless piece of music ever
me- but thats her only really best one
boy- (with smug look) maybe it annoys me that tha writing on the cover is remeniscent of neu
me- (with even more knowing grin) funny you should mention that- ive heard cluster are reforming & have asked sophie to do vocals

i hate musical elitists- in case you havent noticed

u won't get that in the metal section :) Ppl there just looks angry and quietly picks out their own violent angry albums...

I dont think they are. Whenever I go in there they are always nice to me,they come up to me and ask if I'm okay tell me about a certain instrument that I'm looking at..even offer music lessons.

you must be REALLY hot.

Hotter than you, prozaco? How could that be possible?

Heh heh - yea some of those guys in real groovy are tossers! I tried to trade a cd and they said "Non, we can't take this, it's part of a set" and I was like "Wierd...cos I bought it HERE on its own and it was some really frickin expensive import"... so did I get done or what!
I waited for ages for the chickies at the clothing counter to serve me but they were too busy talking shit, so I gave up.
If anyone's interested the best music shop service I have ever had was from Sounds, Queen St (the one next door to McD's) every time I went in there ended up chatting to the staff for bloody ages and they were great!! Altho, my two fav staff from there have left, they still seem pretty good. Selection ain't as good as Real Groovy but ya get that!

Everytime I go into Real Grrovy, the service has always been fine. Especially from Matthew (I think that's his name) who always chats to me about upcoming gigs or other CD's that I might like.
Even my mum says the service has always been good for her when she goes in. Apart from one creppy guy who tried to chat her up when she was buying Modern Drummer for my brother!!

The guy working at where the games are is cool, i don't like his partner the old bloke with all em tattos, his a dick. The woman man security lady is scary.

//i find the customers at cd & instrument shops are sometimes snottier than staff

yup.

I've always found the staff at Groovy to be approachable and helpful. It's the random tossers wandering around who think they are "hipper than thou" that I find annoying. Thankfully, they are rare.

wrt groovy, a quiet big ups to Mark and Justine. :)

Hmm-very strange. I have had no problems at the KRd rock shop while I've been there. There's a guy there that plays for That Band on the Sports Cafe show as the bassist who always asks how the amp I bought is going. When I bought my amp from there they let me try it out and I cranked it up out the back without too many hassles. And when I thought my amp wasn't working properly one of the guys took the time to check it out and we decided it was my guitar pick ups that were causing a terrible noise, not the amp.
So may be you caught them on a bad day or may be I am delusional.
Funnily enough I didn't find the Go West store staff that helpful, but they definately have an awesome range of guitars.

My Arsehole of a step dad is/was a muso. When I auditioned a bassist who was female he told me it was a bad idea to think about having her join. He said "Sure, women are great, but they cant bring as much to music as a guy could." What a prick, Im going to Kick him in the face when I move back to Christchurch. P.S. Australia is the most bullshit country in the world aprt from the great bands that come here (e.g. QOTSA, who totally blew me away last night) it is a brown, unpleasant, overcrowded, smelly country. New Zealand Rocks!
