I mean - The Smiths. The guy engages in selective distortion in his description of a fictitious "crap" Smiths. For example, he quotes only from what happens to be their worst song - Meat Is Murder. Sure Morrissey could be a bit of a sad-sack at times, but he and Johnny Marr were genius incarnate. I guess I do agree with the author that Moz's solo work - apart from a few excellent individual songs (like Suedehead) - quite frankly sucks.
I loved the previous one about Tool. "Your Favourite Band Sucks" is great, because it points out all these true points, that embarrass the fans, 'cos they know how true it is.
maybe he takes it to an extreme- but hes pretty well on the money- all those bands are overrated for a number of reasons- other than their music
joy division- tortured suicidal front guy
the smiths- witty saviours of guitar music
mbv- tortured saviours of guitar noise
im not saying that they didnt have anything to offer musically- but compared to really important artists these guys dont cut it
generally really great artists will have no/little mediocre output- their stuff will be either brilliant or abysmal- lets call it the bam index
max brill (ie duke ellington)= b- 90% a- 10% m- 0%
med brill (ie paul mccartney)= b- 50% a- 50% m- 0%
min brill (ie john lennon)= b- 10% a- 90% m- 0%
remembering that the bam index for music overall at any point in time is 5-5-90- the smiths joy div & mbv are all 5-5-90- most bands/performers are 0-0-100
