As it happens, vel, I'm reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. I read The Virgin Suicides some time ago and adored it - it ranks near the top of the 90s' greatest novels (IMHO). Middlesex is a different novel: a Greek-American family epic centred on Cal, an hermaphrodite. The prose is definitely Eugenides: simple yet elegant; wry at times, tender at others. It won last year's (I almost said "this year's - still quite early in 2004) Pulitzer - quite deserved, methinks.
