hasn't been one of these types of moral debates in a short while, you know the kind that upsets everyone and makes everyone angry at each other :P.
Well who are they really for? I was thinking about this (kind of morbid I know) and I thought how I couldn't allow my self to agree to something like this for family or a friend. Then I thought, if they were suffering do bad, I'd also hate to see that.
So when a family member wants a mercy killing to be performed on a family member who is too incapacitated to claim for one them selves. What is the real motive, they think that the person is suffering too much, or they them selves are suffering too much from seeing the suffering?
I guess different cases bring out different answers.
if you can't understand what I'm trying to get at.. then just argue whether its write or wrong.

dang chronic you bet me to it - i was gunna start a euthanasian topic but what the heck, first come first served.
my opinions on euthanasia - Legalise it, if somebody is suffering from a disease that is always fatal and a cure is not possible (ie. cancer, AIDS, Motor neurone) you may as well put the patient out of their misery and let them go peacefully and painlessly without having to put up with the painful, miserable and often excruciating end and die in the way ive just mentioned.
Unfortunatly the govt. continues to allow "Miserable and painful deaths" of people with terminal illnesses, and what is even more sadder is that with United future and their christian Funa-MENTALLY RETARDED-ist being a supporter of the Govt. it is unlikely that euthanasia will be legalised in New Zealand for at least the next 18 months.

i aggree, but with NZs high suicide rate of course the govt are going to be hesitant to legalise a product that puts a happy image on death

think of it like this lcjamo - if you can put your dog or cat out of its misery through a "mercy killing" why cant you put your loved one incurably ill with cancer, Full Blown AIDS, Motor Neurone Disease etc out if there misery?
as ive said, sadly the govt refuses to listen to the liberal-minded folk of Aotearoa
Hullo Sam, i dont agree that ...
Hullo Sam, i dont agree that anti-euthanasa advocates can be all described as "fundamentilist' or that clarks mob are held at knifepoint by United future. Now that the Supreme court is in place do you trust Margret Wilson to enact mercy killing legislation that you would agree with? My prediction is that euthanasia laws would soon lead to the following, reduction in hospital waitnig lists, reduction in prision population, reduction in kids who look funny, reducton in political agitators, open season on old people in general[stampede from heir apparents], reduction in unemployed, reduction in mentally ill. feel free to add to the list. the same appiles with the death penalty, its not rapists, child molesters and bank managers who get the bullet, its society's undesirerables, invaribly those who most threaten the poistion of our self appointed and self-serving ruling class.

lcajmo, have you ever watched someone you die a very long and excrutiatingly painful death? Do you really think you would be a better person for 'standing back' and allowing them to suffer till the inevitable end of their days?

You may lack conviction in your stance on this but don't question mine. This is not a topic to be taken lightly, I believe what I believe and will act accordingly if I am ever put in such a position. Besides, who the fuck are you to tell me anything when it comes to the people that mean more to me than anything else in this life.

Im someone who has had this type of shit happen in my surrounding with both close family & close friends so I can definitely relate to the shit that goes down with most people. Im not telling you how you should react & how hard its gonna be..Life can be simple but we all make it harder for each other so its never anyones fault. Its a whole collection of powerful simple beings that can make the scenario a little more soothing for people going through it or who have become victims already.
Im sorry to hear about your situation and as a fellow human being I'd like to just express that life always goes on with people are constantly still doing things & you cant follow through with every single person its just too hard..My suggestion & its only a suggestion is to try to be happy & ACCEPT what happens within our life circles. Its all about taking things as they come as most like to put it & just being prepared & self constructive for lifes most challenging courses.
I think the same about euthanasia as I ...
I think the same about euthanasia as I do about abortion - I'm against it, but it's an ethical decision that I think should probably be left to the people involved. I wouldn't like the idea of legalising it, but if it was, I think it should require a stringent administrative process before someone was euthanased.
My reasoning is that I wouldn't want myself to be in a position at any time in the future where I'm under pressure to have a loved one 'put to sleep' for any reason. If euthanasia was legal, then people who don't wish to have someone euthanased may be pressured:
by other family members for all sorts of reasons - out of genuine compassion, or for the will settlement, or just the desire to remove someone that's become an emotional burden.
by conservatives who may view the ongoing health care as an unnecessary drain on our limited health resources.
If euthanasia was a very difficult and costly process for the family then they would only consider the option under the most dire circumstances. Maybe it's heartless to make them jump through bureaucratic hoops at such a difficult time, but I think it'd be the only way to avoid the slippery slope. There should be no question as to the reason someone was euthanased, and that reason should be entirely compassionate.
Personally I think that it's wrong to think pain (even constant terrible pain) should be avoided at all costs. Mind you, I also think it's wrong to think that death should be avoided at all costs, so I guess that's why I'd rather stay fairly neutral on the subject...

I'm kind of on the fence too- I don't presume to place my judgement on anyone elses reasons, but I guess I do have a problem with legislation that prohibits a person from doing what's best for them and their families, whether it involves euthanasia or not. Having said that, I personally wouldn't wish euthanasia on anyone I love or care about. A bit like abortion, my reasons are both ethical and spiritual.

I basically share the same moral grounds as you people on this subject, but I partly question my motives in some respects.
I know that a particular part of me will want for a family member to hang on to life, even if it means suffering so I don't have to let go. I'm just very thankfull that I've never been placed in this situation, and I hope I never will.
