Not enough new music genres coming out these days

Probably since the late seventies/early eighties no new genres have sprung up with the exception of the rise of the rap/hip hop genre (which i dont really care about), Ever since then we have just come up with slight variations on the exisiting genres. you might argue that this is how new genres come to exist but we just seem to be basing everything on the same thing, over and over again. To be tru, id join any band (or whatever you might call this new thing) now. i can play drums, and kinda sing :). but thats beside the point. id like ur opinions on this, i rekn its important

Forums: NZ Music,

it's true most genres are just variations of others, but that is just the natural evolutionary process i suppose. .

some (fairly wide) genres i would consider as being completely new in the last 20 years:

Techno (encompassing house, trance, any 'poundy' dance music)
Jungle/Drum n' Bass/Breakbeat/Downbeat
New Wave/Synth Pop (this existed earlier, but not really widespread)
Industrial
All the new R n'B and Rap

it all depends how specific you want to be i suppose...

new metal is a new concept kind of... well I guess itsjust taking rock and rap and sticking it together...

I don't know if its possible to start a completely new kind of music because people will naturally try and link it to something else.... "you know, its metal, but no always that heavy, but its kind of got this classical jazz type thing happening with bits of funk here and there..."

There are enough genres out there, we don't really need any new ones

i'd rather listen to new interesting stuff and new genres than recycle shit over and over. . .
people like you are holding back the species, and it annoys me

most times new genres are recycle shit over and over

I think that it is really pointless trying to create a new genre if all you are go ing to do is recylce whats already available to you. I've accepted the fact that every source of inspiration I gather is really a collection of ingredients from many different genres of music. And...if you did create a new genre what would it be like? The other day I thought of fusing a song, say 'Enter Sandman', with a reggae feel. Now for laughs sake, it would really take the cake, so to speak. However, if I decided to take this commercially, I would be interested to see how long a life span it would take.

Now I don't really care too much for metal music, however, if I decided to fuse reggae with metal, I'd have to say that metal is music for faggots (my own opinion, please do not take it to heart).
I think I would call the new genre Faggae. Faggae equals Faggot and Reggae.

cheers.

//most times new genres are recycle shit over and over

And how many genres are you familiar with, Tama? The ones they play on The Rock?

//Faggae equals Faggot and Reggae.

Nice one, hillbilly boy.

I don't sleep underneath a rock tclak

//most times new genres are recycle shit over and over

indeed .. . MOST do

what about the ones that don't . . .
thats where it gets interesting. .

besides, anything anyone does is influenced by what they've seen and/or heard previously, whether deliberately or subconsciously ..
even if you try and invent something completely new, the idea still has to be based, at least to an extent, on past experience. .
if you try hard enough, you can find elements of every genre in every other genre. . .
on a very base level, all genres involve music, which is a concept borrowed from all forms of music before them, which was in turn somehow learned from the noises in the environment in prehistoric times, which was.. ... you get the gist

New Zealand doesn't really have many genres. All the new Genre's and music that is coming out are rap/hip hop/r&b or whatever you want to call it.

maybe if a NZ gruop/artist/band came up with a new genre. Thatd be fuckin wicked, a NZ band gettin world wide stardom

Agreed. But the problem is they're sticking with the same type of music and not really modifying it. Oh well, i gues they are ading some island beats to some songs, but that's it.

We've been trying to come up with our genres as a band, (Z Amigos) but we still have to start with one that already exists. But usually we just come up with hybrids, like classical/folk/metal or country/ska/rock. We hoped they would become genres of their own, instead of sounding like classical/folk/metal, but unfortunately, people will just say "hey that's cool, it sounds like a cross between classical and folk and metal". It is really hard to do, but then so many genres of music have sprung up over the last century, maybe there's just no more to come up with!

but thats the thing I was talking about before, people will always liken something to what already exists, even if it is new. They have to place it in a box and find a way to make it belong, to be able to compare it to other things.

What, do you listen to the Edge? Munters.

agreed.

Kinda like saying im bored with the colours of the spectrum... All musicians do are mixing colours not inventing new ones. Who cares what genres are other than generalized way of lumping music together..

im not fretting that there arent many new genres emerging.. im happy with what we've got

I worked with some well known London artists who got my friend to write a piece of software to chop up and re-arrange samples in a random way. Its never been released to the public but I got a go on it and made something I've never heard anywhere else.
I'm not the only one of course. A few others are working on the same idea.
All I can say is that if you throught you were hearing the future with Drum n Bass. Just wait for this stuff!

so it's like Glitch then ???

can't you just be happy with the genres - "i like" and "i don't like" ???

//can't you just be happy with the genres - "i like" and "i don't like" ???

Nice argument Trixie, but I don't think we will ever be happy with categorising a new genre of music, or for want of a better word art form. If we were totally happy there'd be only one genre. In a way there IS only ONE genre, and thats freedom of expression, but then we break it up into lots of different forms of expression hence, genres....

We have main genres ie pop, then we create sub genres in the pop category etc....

Enjoy the vibe and genre for what it's for. If you don't like it for whatever reason , listen to something you'd rather listen to and appeals to you.

All the best.

I know that this IS mostly true, but for the ones that are just cruisin along with whats popular or the ones who are happy with the current genres, . think about what you would listen to if something that is so new and original it isnt remotely based on any existing genre sprung up, even if that genre is only suited for a particular audience. Would you stick with your current genre or try take up a new one, and by taking up a new type of music you will probably be taking up a new lifestyle.

don't worry about genre, just enjoy the music!!

ultimately yeah..thats all thats important...
but its fun to categorize everything

Well said man..just enjoy whatever put out for you..Dam dont expect the best all the time..thats how you get bored as you are now & expect more & more too often..
Music is music..let is ride...

'Genre' is the least important thing about creating music!! Putting sound in a box is for the end-user, it doesn't mean shit to the creator, who is just making their sound however they want to. If you're making music and your biggest concern is what genre you fit into, you probably shouldn't be making it at all.

//If you're making music and your biggest concern is what genre you fit into, you probably shouldn't be making it at all.

Well said Jesetherese!!!
Unless you're a puppet like Brittaney Spears, you have no choice, you're just an actress. lol!!!

are you sure you guys are mistaking no new genre's with no new INTERNATIONAL, HUGE GENRE's that get publicity and are in your face? If you bother to look there are plentyl of stlyes of music that have evolved in the last say, twenty years other than hip hop that probably fit your criteria for a new genre, its just that they arn't popular for whatever reason. But also, how many new genre's of music is there room for? We've seen quite a few totally new paradigms of popular music music in the last 100 years or so, jazz, blues (bit older maybe) blues based rock, modern rock, metal, hip hop, rap, creol music, country, pop, there heaps from the last 100 years.

//are you sure you guys are mistaking no new genre's with no new INTERNATIONAL, HUGE GENRE's that get publicity and are in your face?

Well I for one am completely sure I am not mistaking no new genres etc....

//But also, how many new genre's of music is there room for?

Good point. How many rooms are there for this???

what an irrelevant topic

Well I think the topic should really begin with 'is it me, OR is there...' I mean this kind of thread is always going to speak more about someone's subjective experience than anything relating directly to musical genres. They're just pigeonholes anyway. Music won't always fit into a certain pigeonhole, and when it doesn't it's almost certainly doomed to obscurity.

// since the late seventies/early eighties no new genres have sprung up with the exception of the rise of
// the rap/hip hop genre (which i dont really care about)

For what it's worth hip-hop in the US started in the late seventies/early eighties.

earlier if you include baraka heron & the last poets &c

but it only became big , and for some people acceptable, in teh early ninties.

no- walk this way was global- & that was ¿86?- licence to ill was ¿87?

//licence to ill was ¿87?

License to Ill was '86. I was 12, and it was my first concert. I still have the tour shirt.

which city- we might have been at the same gig

"There are no new genres?"

Isn't that a little bit like saying "I have already heard every kind of music?"

Or is it more like saying "I keep hearing the same song over and over again, just played by different people?"

Either way, I'm hearing you say a lot more about what you've been exposing yourself to than what has been happening with music for the last few years. Where have you been looking?

I'm still waiting for "Muslim Rock".

I don't think anything can be funnier than German HipHop.

what about itailian punk

nz reggae is funnier than kraut-hop & spaghetti punk

omg
nz is like the jamaica of the south
how dare you spread dem bad vibes
proper

nah .. nz reggae is a bit silly (but it's not too bad on a nice sunny day, and the right cocktail of herbal highs)
not as funny as Dutch Gabber (or any kind of Gabber for that matter)

http://www.mp3.com.au/grusome ]

hey, i might be born and bred in NZ AND consider myself a kiwi but i am full blooded dutchman too. U can diss da music, but not da pplz. (even tho u didnt)

I've yet to try Ethiopian-Jewish hip-hop from Israel.

//can diss da music, but not da pplz

hell no .. the the dutch are wicked people. .
but some of their music is pretty bad....sometimes it's even so bad its good ;)

hehe. i no

Ill admit here that i have overlooked many aspects, and that of music and genres, buthat was my point of starting this topic, to find out if this is what people thought, or if everyone was just happy with what was going on in the music world. Also i thougnt of this topic because i just keep on looking at bands like the strokes and the datsuns and all i see is a rock band from the eighties complete with hair and clothes. U have to admit that that is very unorginal.

I cant say i have heard every kind of music, but i have heard alot. Everyones heard the popular and the money making music thats around today. You might think im a hypocrite for starting this topic because i really like listening to my 8foot, slayer etc. and even Led Zep and jimi hendrix.

The next big genre probably exists already, it just hasnt been recognised. Maybe its the talent scouts being dumb or the artists aren't exposing themselves enough.

And il admit i got some (most???) of my facts wrong :)

But still keep this topic going, its interesting
