anti pop consortium

any one in NZ heard of the anti pop consortium? they are part of the nu spoken word/hip hop movement... really mad shit.

Forums: NZ Music,

Yeah, for sure. They split up earlier in the year, though. I think Warp released a solo album by Beans fairly recently (last 6 months) and High Priest shows up in a few good places.

I got into them via DJ Vadim, a UK based producer and DJ who I've liked for the last decade. He did an album with them under the alias The Isolationist. Well worth checking out.

In recent years I found they were getting more boring.... or more difficult.. or something. The singles off the last album were still good, though. Actually it's probably just me being honest about what I like in hip-hop. I do like things to be a bit off-beat, but I like decent flows as well, and those guys really do push down the spoken word poetry path. Heard Saul Williams? Similar deal.

//Heard Saul Williams?

that guy is amazing. . .
I love that track 'Coded Language' he did with DJ Krust (from Reprazent)

'coded language' is definitely an excellent track... just trying to keep up with the guy blows my mind

i think i actually prefer the isolationists album over antipop's stuff, maybe even vadim's.
it is a truly excellent record.

nice one jet - I missed The Isolationist stuff.

my view of the apc is that some of their stuff is simply rubbish. terrible production and random words. but when they get it right its better than just about everything else out there. not since de la soul have we had this kinda vibe. apc are like de la soul on drip fed DMT.

yes, big fan of Saul Williams although he also puts out some terrible releases.

have you heard the Antipop Consortium vs Matthew Ship album on Thirsty Ear. some of that is good.

are you in NZ jet?

I'm actually based in Melbourne, although in my home of Wellington right now... still wasting time looking at this site. ;)

That Isolationist album never got much press, I'd never heard of the APC when I got it. But it's worthwhile, I reckon...

The Isolationist (Jazz Fudge) - it's a weird combo of Vadim plus spoken word rap, quite edgy in my humble opinion.
Had the pleasure of catching APC on the festival run in europe last year... actually they disappointed, the sound was really bad (so not nec a reflection on them), but they kept asking for more volume when it was already peaking indecently

Onto it! I shall add to the collection.
