Rock Venues

Hey, what venues do you guys reckon are the best for local bands...I'm not talking stadiums, but local venues that are cool?
I can't think of many...back in the day, I had heaps of venues, but a lot have closed lately? Any good ones worth a look in???

Forums: NZ Music,

Whats local?

if you're talking about Auckland, The Kings Arms is by far the city's premium live venue. The Outhouse looks like it would be cool for a show, and i think the Classic and Galatos could provide.

It would be really cool if anyone who came into this post could describe the small live venues in their town, so that young touring bands with little experience of those towns would know where to play.

Maybe put the name of your town and the 'best' venue for a live gig. Like, as an Aucklander, I would suggest to a new band that the Kings Arms is by far the best, and that Galatos, while nice, is probably going to be expensive to hire. The Kings Arms charge a nominal fee for their PA (and a sound guy) but you're gauranteed a crowd, even if it's only a small one.

Could be a cool way to help a lot of bands play the "right" venues across NZ when they decide to tour. Just an idea.

If your band decided(for some odd reason) to come to Whakatane, then The Boiler room is probably the best place for a gig. Its a pub in the centre of town and all bands play there when they come here. at the mometn im trying to book a gig there but i have no idea what the hire cost and stuf is. Another venue that can be all ages is the rockpit(youth centre) which is above a gym just down the road from the boiler room. This is $50 to hire out and is just a hall type place. Overall...dont come to whakatane if you dont want a small crowd..coz your garenteed to get one!:Dbut gigs here are fun

Heh thanks deputy...you said my request in a much more succint and valuable way!
Basically, I am trying to find some gig venues for a wicked punk-rock band and am trying to suss out where the best venues all over NZ are. No point in limiting a bands tour to just Auckland!
Ta
Merry xmas!

No problem. It's a great topic.

There are tones in Wellington, in my view The Valve has the nicest P.A ive played through but it has size limitations so in my opionion Bodega is where its at - decent size, good location and fairly nice P.A as well :-)

bodega is seriously nice, but it's pretty rare to have punk rock there (although not unheard of)
as well as valve, there's also indigo, the southern cross, or for all ages type stuff underground arts or thistle hall..
in wellington the best idea (i think) would be to get in touch with some similar bands from around wellington or wherever and play a show with 4 or 5 bands, unless, you are well known and respected, its unlikely you will be haeadlining your first few shows in welly, not even the bleeders manage that yet as far as i know... but yeah. . . if you hook up with some local bands you're almost guaranteed a good crowd in these parts. . .

Dunedin:
Refuel and Arc are the two places to play - Arc is a charitable trust run with the express purpose of supporting/promoting local music, but my reccomendation must go to Refuel - it's more central, and the PA is better. The ideal night to play is "pint night" which is held once a week - $2 beers all night, with a gauranteed crowd of at least 200 punters, predominantly arts/music students who will be interested in seeing a new band. Avoid times like exam periods and holidays - the entire town is based around the university calendar.

The Stomach is Palmy's main (and really the very only) gig venue. It's got a practise room and recording facitilies also, so you can do much stuff there. They have a gig about every fortnight, and heaps of local youth bands play there. It's $3 to practise there, and real cheap recording and venue hire for gigs also.

This is a really excellent topic - they should put it in best of the boards. If every single town in New Zealand was represented on here, it would be an extremely useful resource for people to plan tours. Somebody should tell the people who run NZM, or something.

Yeah, well it's true - for bands that have to do it the hard way, ie out of their own pocket and organising gigs themselves its hard to know where they can play out of their own area!
I'm gonna print all this stuff that people have wrote in out...
Thanks to everyone who gave info on their areas! Huge help!!
:-D

But keep it coming kids - Christchurch? Hamilton? New Plymouth? Taupo?......There must be like 30 good towns to play in New Zealand, and we've covered about five. Come on people!

napier - has all ages venue - stateofit - can have anywhere between 5 - 400 odd kids there, maily punk metal and grungey stuff, outoftown bands are best to play with some of the local bands here to get a crowd...

oflaherties - irish pub that has everyone from fur patrol to 8 foot sativa to black seeds to jakob, i guess it fits about 200-300 on a good night but is kinda smallish, no inhouse PA though.

Odins Inn part of the stateofit complex, mainly metal acts occaisionally punk, used to have a boganny element but i think they are getting a different crowd in now..

The places in Wellington that have best acoustics (in my opinion) are:

Valve Bar - Vivian Street: Nice solid acoustics, honest and genuine sound and representatiojn. Just make sure you get a good sound engineer on the door or you will sound like shit. Ask for a guy named Blair to do your sound at that venue.

Bodega - Ghuznee Street: Infamous for it's tap and homebrewed beers, this venue is a haven for many genres of their kind. Nice and grinding loud for rock (although I have never seen Shihad play even at the original venue). I did see Trans Am play there earlier this year. Nice PA, but again, make sure you have someone who knows how to drive the desk.

Hey if yu got a Punk Rock band hire a hall, Put up posters everywere and Rock till your Pants drop /m/ or just go to a bar :) or find a Punk Rock Club (i've been trying to find one for almost a year)

Yea the hire a hall thing is cool, but I did that before and been to many hall hired gigs and you always get shut down by noise control etc as most halls are in suburban areas, but if ya can think of any that you could play music in, I'd love to hear from ya!
