The Best Gigs Of 2003

Well... we are nearly at the end of the year... time to reflect.

My best gig experiences of the 2003... add yours.

17 Jan - Big Day Out - Goddamn, that was a good one. Sunny day and amazing acts.
6 Feb - One Love in Wellington. Cannabis hazed warm day with huge bass... Rhombus.
22 Feb - The Breeders and Paselode at Indigo * - Packed out night, brilliant acts, and a Pixies cover.
24 Feb - Bob Dylan and Ani DiFranco at Queens Wharf. Ani Difranco was outstanding, Bob Dylan just had to be seen.
21 Mar - The Chills at Bodega - Classic, great to hear those songs that I didn't even realise that I knew.
30 Mar - Jack Johnson at Queens Wharf - Ben Harper only played his crap new stuff... Jack Johnson was very nice, though.
3 Apr - Machine Gun Fellatio and Deja Voodoo at Indigo - Nutty stage show and funkiness abound.
12 Apr - Two Lane Black Top, The Accelerants, Batrider at Bodega - Great locals bands performing on form. Remember thinking that all is well in Wellington.
26 Apr - Disasteradio, Tried For Treason, Batrider, The Deadline, School Of Meat at Thistle Hall
3 May - Violent Femmes and Goldenhorse at The Parthenon * - Goldenhorse shonw, then I sang and danced along to a Violent Femmes greatest hits and came away grinning.
29 May - This Night Creeps, Tried For Treason, The Deadline, Batrider at The Irish Society Hall - Alcohol soaked Thursday night hardcore gig. Had a huge amount of fun, and ended up singing Karaoke until the wee hours of the morning.
28 June - WTF? - Cortina, The Blue Set, Idle Faction, The Occupants at Valve - Brilliant night, excellent performances, excellent lights and a wicked vibe.
2 Aug - Incestuous Union - Idle Faction, The K1500 Project, Uncle Dad, Kamahi at Indigo - A wicked crowd and a non stop on stage experience for me.
9 Aug - Captain Sgt Major, Cortina, Disasteradio at Valve - The Dukes and I attended with our heads not in this world... and these bands made perfect sense to us.
30 Aug - The K1500 Project, Po-Ha, The Lollipop Parade - Just a great night of bands playing really well. K1500's third gig at valve that week... probably my best K1500 show yet.
21 Sep - A Low Hum International Launch at Bodega - a brilliant afternoon and evening, with excellent performances and an excellent feeling.
8 Oct - The White Stripes and Whirlwind Heat at The Town Hall - Surprised pleasantly by Whilrwind Heat and satisfied by The White Stripes huge performance.
22 Nov - Jakob, Looma at Indigo - Napier bands representing the very nice but very fucken loud guitar rock.
12 Dec - Calexico, Ghostplane, Urban Tramper at Indigo * - Gig of the year. Ghostplane better than I've seen them, Urban Tramper very nice and pleasantly casual, Calexico out of this world. It was soo good to see them here after listening to them constantly for the last 6 months, and for them to be amazing was even better. Wicked.
20 Dec - WTF!? - SstimulusS, Idle Faction, Cortina, Imon Starr, The Elusive Ones, The Tree Ninja Kollectiv - Great night, with mad decorations, moshing pink elephants, wicked lights, no genre bands, and a random drunken poet with a mic.

*= Thank you mystery girl... my hero. Keep going! You're doing well :)

Forums: NZ Music,

Fuck I don't know it's all a drunken blur and so many drunken blurs and so much great music that I can't even begin to unravel the fuzzy ball of wool in my mind.

NiceGuyEddie, did you mean "Best Gigs" or "All Gigs"?

I think Niceguy is quite easy to please...that I strongly believe...is a sign of good taste....a broad palette etc

There were far more gigs that that, Heather...

and yes... I am easy to please... and yes, Devil Rider - I believe that I do have good taste... in fact - I think that I like my music taste best out of anyone I know's music taste. :)

I think mine is better, even if I do like Elemeno P (shhhh secret!)

Don't you like Jack Johnson anyway? Ooooooooooooo

//There were far more gigs that that, Heather...

Sheesh, I should get out more.

¿¿¿I think that I like my music taste best out of anyone I know's music taste???

thats a total crock- seeing as you

a- ATTENDED the johnson harper gig

b- LIKED johnson

c- obviously LIKE harpers old stuff

¿did you know that in the states that tour had a surgeon generals health warning?

I STILL think that someone should kill that Johnson fucker. Even John Mayer doesn't piss me off as that wannabe surfer twat. (tclak looks hopefully towards lena o who is sharpening her nails).

mayer is just as bad- some fucker gave me his 1st album last christmas- struck tham off my list of people i wanna know

but its best to let tham live- you can tell by their eyes that they know how bad they are- & it confuses them that so many cant see this- & they want so bad to be good- it tortures them at night- imagine going thru everyday knowing youre a fake- kurt broke under that weight

Yes, I enjoy a bit of Jack - I think it is nice music. :P

... Skid Row, too... and apparently I like Justin Timberlake (went bowling, sat next to a speaker, Justin funked some mad shit up.)

Calexico, Lambchop, Wilco....twas the year the new breed of americana come to our fair shores and fuck they were great..plus the breeder doing gigantic , oh my heart did flutter

best new acts i saw were disaster radio and cortina...with Ghostplane improcving with age like a fine cheddar.mmmmm

the most fun I had performing was at lie low...big ups to da low key gig massiv

hmm..i reckon.

OK - Off the top of my head, though I'm sure I'll be wandering down the street later on and remember a pile more...

Die DJ Die III and that Volume party were heaps of fun - proof that Wellington rock is pretty healthy about now... um... great year for internationals - Lou Barlow, Hot Water Music and White Stripes all blew me away for different reasons.

The two gigs that leap out at me though would be the Breeders, and the Phoenix Foundation album release gig, both at Indigo. Phoenix cause it was packed and there was such a crazy air of excitement in the room - they kicked royal arse, and the full house loved every minute and I remember thinking things were alright in this world. Breeders was so special too - and gigantic... what can you say (live song of the year?)

Hmmm... most special personal moment for me was the Pirate Technics launch gig - My girlfriend just got back from a year overseas and heard our band for the first time, my comic came out, and phoenix and marystaple (two of her and my favourite bands) rounded it out. Magical!

Oh, I love getting nostalgic at the end of the year... espcially when its been a really good one.

yes gigantic live song of the year ..no doubt...i was almost in tears. no shit . i fckn love the pixies and to see kim doing that old classic just wow.....wow

Fully agree that the Mother Guru gigs were the best fo the year ... @ Indigo & Bodega ... waiting impatiently to see the Gurus in action again at the Cusp '04!

trinity roots at bodega - the gig with two drummers.. ouch wicked
jakob, looma and tristan - at oflays .. this gig seems to be the most memorable.. hmm
bad apple orchestra at the last whopper chopper .. sun sun sun, wine,,,

jakob/looma/kahu was 2002 tho sam, just. didnt you leave early?

the trinity gig at subnine was a lot better than the bodega one....oooo chris o'conner and rikki gooch playing together...fckn awesome

//jakob/looma/kahu was 2002 tho sam, just. didnt you leave early?

errr, dammit - what a waster.. ah yeah - i think the bouncer mistook me for a drunken ball room dancing wrestler -

i hear that chris and rikki are gonna play together with an orchestra for the art fest next year - with david long too .. cool

exit the dragon ;))
i remember reading that one here!

u forgot the datsuns tour of nz in october wich was soooooooooooooooo excellent!

Eddie, tell me about the mystery girl... does she work at Lime Florist

If I made a list of the top 50 most important people in the NZ music Industry, Mystery Girl would be number 1.

in 2003: Seafood, Lou Barlow, The Violent Femmes, The Breeders, Calexico, Turin Brakes..and did she also bring J.Mascis and Lambchop? Have I missed anyone?

man, without Mystery Girl, the only International acts we'd be getting in Wellington would be Incubus

yup Lambchop, and Bob Log..and last year manitoba and david grubbs

she sounds like a pearler, this Mysery Girl. But heck, I aint been to most of those gigs you've all mentioned and therefore feel a right cad EXCEPT I did go to the Breeders which as mentioned already was fckn special, yes to hear Gigantic live was chillingly beautiful. I been listening to the Safari EP and the Cult of Ray all day to remind myself of other halcion post-pixies magic

oops did I say Misery Girl? I meant Mystery Girl... good on ya luv

oh boy.....i just heard a pearler of a rumour about an act Mystery Girl is bringing to NZ in early March 2004.

who???!

BDO was ok. some pretty good bands were seen.
Ani DiFranco - ie not Bob Dylan
Ben Harper was ok. Jack Johnson sucked.
White Stripes were pretty onto it.
Best Intl gig that never happened: Massive Attack and possibly Spearhead

Locally. Dimmer, Goldenhorse, Watkins gigs, DJDIII, the Shihad weekend and possibly Pluto a few weeks ago.

//- ie not Bob Dylan

eh? any Bob gig is a privilage these days mate

bob was fantastic! t'was a truely religious experience... cried 3 times

ani had him beat, and she didn't have a band.

despite the fact that ive always thought bob overrated (speshly as a poet)- & a bit of a moody bastard- his show in ak was off the planet- totally unexpected- + ani difranco cant write songs for shit

thought ani was a yawnfest. I've heard her cd's (well, some of the millions) seen her live & read her interviews, and... I just don't get it? boring, boring, boring.

//ani difranco cant write songs for shit

We can agree on something, it seems.

Thought bob was cool, if a little hagard in the vox department, but ani made my skin crawl. i dont know why but I really dislike her music.....:-(

Kraftwerk, The Breeders, Bob Log. Electic but so so sweet.
And whoever said 'Gigantic' as live song of the year I totally agree!!!!!!!!!!

number one for me would have to be - Robbie and Duran Duran at western springs 6th december.

the rest would be nearly every other gig i've been to this year.

Bob Dylan - grandad rulz
Black Seeds & Trinity Roots - restored the faith after trinity's average album
Phoenix Foundation @ Bodega - never seen so many well behaved punters wearing daggy shirts
PJ Harvey @ bdo - a brown cordory jumpsuit never looked so good
Black Seeds & Hikoikoi Reserve @ jackson st carnival - 50 year olds & 5 year olds dancin' their ass' off, a beautiful thing
