I'm a UK artist thinking of relocating to NZ (thanks to a Aussie passport) because UK is, quite frankly, off its head. But I cannot decide between Auckland and Wellington.
The style I do is similair to massive attack over 200 bpm madness (not 4/4). Lyrics cover exposing the NWO and other babylonian secrets plus the usual...
It seems to me that with a limited market and lots of creative people (more than Australia it seems) it will be hard to break into the NZ scene being from abroad so want to start out by chosing the right city...

for the kind of stuff you are making, i would say Wellington audiences would be more receptive, the wellington music scene is quite small compared to Auckland, but from my experience seems more diverse and experimental .. there's plenty of good electronic music floating about in new zealand, check out anything on LOOP or Capital Recordings. Wellington also has a rather active drum n' bass undercurrent

Yo DUDE. Wellington is smaller but nicer more supportive (perhaps also more 'cliquey' but if you is nice you have no probs yo). Everytime I play in Aucks I am struck by the apparent lack of an actual 'scene' whereas in WGTN everyone does shit with everyone else and for a city this small there are plenty of gigs... Whatever you do best wishes yo.

If you're trying to break into a more darker market, something that isnt banging straight trance or house, i'd reccommend you start in Wellington.
I'm from Auckland, and even though im certainly not into dance music, i'll tell you that building a supportive fanbase in Wellington is definately much easier down there.

much respect gruesome, nonbreed, rudy, zippo, lucifer_sam and distortion. Thanks for your response and more importantly for the good vibes. I am definately doing darker stuff, zippo, and not really into house/trance/breakbeat these days (I used to make that stuff). I had already thought that Wellington would be it, so this confirms my instincts... Distortion, I will come to Auckland for sure. I'd love to do gigs there. peace.

Sabretooth,
Your music would breed very well in Wellington.
I'm also sure of the fact that will have decent sized and postive crowds of people coming to watch you gig. I certainly would. Also, Wellingto loves Massive attack styles....the scene is creating more hype.
All the best.
