do you think that the actions of fans are the artists responsibility?
lets say a band writes a song about drugs (pretty far-fetched), should they then take responsibility for their fans taking drugs? are they in fact encouraging it?
i've just been arguing with someone about this, and i mentioned an incident at a metallica concert where a fan slaughtered a pig and threw all the bits on stage. is this metallicas fault? i said no, she said yes. she said the band is obviously "providing an environment where someone can get away with such a sick act", and that means they're encouraging it.
i reckon if i get on stage, play a song about drugs, and some hippy throws a dead animal at me, its not my fucking fault.

No no no. No matter what, even if you sang these lines :
I like drugs, I like drugs,
Can you please coat me with pieces of dogs!"
(Which admittedly doesn't really rhyme)
It's not the fault of the musician. A musician provides music, hopefully inspires the listener, maybe provides some happiness in an otherwise miserable life, maybe reminds the listener that life is good, or that everybody hurts, sooooometimes. Whatever. If a musician sang :
"Jump off the harbour bridge"
and someone did it, would it be the fault of the musician? Of course not, and yet people (Ozzy Osbourne srpings to mind) have been taken to court for less direct directions. People everywhere are retards. (See : 8 Foot Sativa forum) This is not the responsibility of the musician. They just play fucking music - What the musician says doesn't have any bearing on what the listener does - the very idea is ridiculous. If music had the power to brainwash people, Fred Durst would run the world. Happily, this is not the case. Putting the blame on musicians is a cop out, an easy target for right wing politicians.
God, the very existence of this forum pisses me off. The musician is completely free of responsibility. The musician could tell you to cut your face off and feed it to your dog - no one is holding a fucking gun to your head. Use your common sense, dipshit.

who are you getting angsty with there mate? Prozaco has simply asked a question...and an interesting one at that.
...the fact of the matter is...music can influence...but people have choices, so reponsibility ultimitly lies with the listener.
In saying that however, for instance, as an example, if I was to listen to death metal all day everyday which contained lyrics like, for instance, for example, "work sucks, life is pointless, fuck the world, inject some drugs, trust no-one" the chance of me turning out to be a negative fuck is highly likely.
It's not the artists fault if people do shit, but if the artist sings about bollix all the time you really have to wonder why people fill their ears with it in the first place.

Ah, there may be a correlation, but there's no way you can say there's a causal connection. People tend to listen to music that matches their natural style and mood. Saying that listening to certain music will turn you into a 'negative fuck' is like saying that wearing black velvet and white face-paint all the time will (eventually) turn you into a goth.

When someone throws 'a slaughtered pig' on stage, we naturally have to ask 'why?' and search for a way of making sense of it...
Why is there a why? Why do things have to make sense all the time? Stuff just happens. I'm glad I don't understand what would make someone do that, but I'm sure it's got a little bit more to do with their phsychological issues than the music they happen to like.

Does one piece of music have the same effect on every listen? I think even if the music was simply a loud, piercingly dissonant shriek there would still be some of us who dig it, some of us who turn it off, and some of us who pack a carving knife and go looking for the nearest pig farm...
//I just think that if you fill your ...
//I just think that if you fill your head with negative stuff all the time, it's not going to help the positive and optimistic cause now is it?
Sure, but you're still deliberately opening yourself up to it. You're choosing to fill your head with negative stuff. It's an issue with you - not with the music or the artist.
Think of it this way - some people listen to Celine Dion for pleasure. They listen and they get all sentimental. Now - say I was working in a shop where they played Celine Dion all the time. Am I going to start getting Celinified? Granted it wouldn't be good for my stress levels working in that environment, but it's not going to turn me into a fluffy bunny.
Musicians are not responsible for the emotional wellbeing of every single person that listens to their music. We nearly always have a choice to listen or not. Even in the small number of cases that we don't have a choice, the music can't inflict any serious damage if we don't allow it.
And while I'm here I'd just like to say I believe that positivity and optimism are overrated. There's nothing wrong with a bit of negativity every now and then, just for balance.

I guess anyone deliberately targeting a more vulnerable demographic should at least try to exercise a degree of responsibility. Ultimately though there's plenty of chaff in young peoples' lives even after you remove all the popstars. I think eventually yes, the parents should set the limits on their kids' behaviour.
I was thinking about it during the portion of that Britney interview where she said it was up to the parents. The thing that struck me is that pop stars are still projecting their own particular value system.
An obvious example is Madonna - in the past plenty of people demanded that she "be more responsible" but she could argue that she believed it was responsible to urge people to talk freely and openly about sex, and to feel comfortable as sexual beings rather than repressing a natural part of themselves.
There are so many different value systems being advertised not just by pop stars but by tv programmes, politicians, doctors, lawyers, manufacturers...ultimately it'd have to be left to the parent to determine the value system under which their child will grow up.
//...er Uhhhh, yeah- that too ...

Uhhhh, yeah- that too ;o)
Maybe it's not just the music, but everything it represents, tangibly or intangibly, that really gets concerned parents burning records.... eg, the merchandise, the lyric sheets, the fansites, t-shirts, as well as the image and behaviour portrayed in videos, posters, albumn covers and on tour... clearly music in and of itself is just music, but the propoganda that can come with it IS SO OFTEN blatantly targetted at a certain kind of demographic...

i think an artist has a responsibility to the fan in that they should put on a good enough show that audience is so into it that they don't have time or energy to haul that pig all the way up through audience and then biff it on stage.
if the guy is carrying carcasses around, pushing through hordes of screaming moshing fans (which is a mission) he's clearly not getting into the music
