So who saw it at midnight last night?
I loved the fight scenes, the CGI is all good, the orcs are cool & brutal.
I can't remember the book so well now, but I think it was pretty similar. A few parts missing (ie Saruman bits, orc marches) but maybe they'll be in the special editition DVD.
Gawd, must Peter Jackson give us a cringe-worthy scene in every movie? The ending was so annoying & cheesily done, like when they all walk in the door. Wish it hadn't been demi-dumbed-down for general movie goers. It's funny how the audience has changed... For the Fellowship's midnight screening, everyone was adult or teenaged. Everyone acted mature, they were there because they'd read the books I suspect (not neccessarily fanatics). This time, it was full of younger teens and children, going because they like the movie & toys I suspect. They were a bit rowdier & claped in the cheesy bits.
But overall, yeah, twas good.

Yeah, i haven't read the books either, and although the toys are really really cool, i'm going coz i fell in love with the stories. And i'm getting the trilogy for xmas so i can't wait to see the final movie.
I'm not usually the best reader in the world so i think it's good for me to watch the movies before reading the books, coz i hear theyre pretty complicated and at least now i can identify the characters and basically know the story.
Can't wait!!!

They're not really complicated. The age that a lot of people I know read them at was pre-young teens. If you just skip over the poems & songs it's easy.

Yea I went to the midnight screening at Hoyts wairau (after finding out at 2pm my mate ahd a spare ticket), I was the first in and the last out of the cinema. :) This one was definately my favourite, for a few different reasons but one being that u can actaully pick out my uncle in it (he worked as a stunt man and double for Faramir). like when Faramir is being dragged to the castle behind his horse that's actually my uncle and theres a shot of his face which Peter Jackson said they could still use because he looked so much like the actor playing Faramir. Gave the film a personal touch lol :>
Great movie although it gets kinda annoying how Legolas is always stating the obvious, like, just saying what is occuring, gets kinda patronising after a while (as much as I love Orlando), and as much as I hate to say it, there were a lot of 'moments' between characters which could have hinted at more than just a male - male 'friend' relationship.

There was also the scence with Gandalf when Aragorn said "what does your heart tell you?". I think the smile was all Gandalf needed. But I could be wrong and just really nit-picking.

No I did not get to the midnight show......... the tickets for it were sold within the 1st 20 minutes after the doors opened and as I didn't camp out over night.. I missed out, did see it this morning
All and all it was good
The cheese was still there, laid on thickly and it still pisses me that frodo is seen as the hero when it was really Sam.... I would have thought in this day and age, the class distinction that was evident in the book would have been eliminated.
And I had always got the impression that Gollum found redemption at the end but that didn't seem to be the case in the movie.
Yes the end was mucky but so was the end of the book.. the destruction of the shire was absent, which was to me an important theme in the book..
// hero when it was really Sam yeah, ...
// hero when it was really Sam
yeah, absolutely. the 3rd book rocks because of this - each book seems to have a different hero - Gandalf in the first, .. not sure about the second, perhaps Aragorn, and the third is so Sam. he does all the legwork, without him all would be lost. it's a partnership. i love it when he bears the ring for a while - he looks out across Mordor and thinks on what he could do with ultimate power - become the ultimate gardener, fix up Mordor, grow nice veges for people, history would know him as Sam the Great Gardener (or words to that effect) - he'd make the world a nice place - but he realises it's all a big empty promise ...
i loved the 3rd book so much because of Sam and the fact he's so determined to get this damn thing done. Frodo's pretty much a comatose wreck of a junkie in Mordor ...
i loved the film. felt things were a little rushed thru in places - i adored Mordor and definitely wanted more apocalyptic suffering there. [agree with your Gollum redeemed thing - at least he did seem at peace and very very happy when he ... y'know]
the Riders of Rohan - wow. when they turned up at Pellenor fields ... wow. best part of the movie for me.
also i'm missing the Scouring of the Shire - a great end. didn't think the end dragged on at all actually - when they are all viewed together it's gonna seem like a tight unified story - starting and ending with Bilbo. i did miss the Merry in a coma storyline and also the Eowyn in grief-coma storyline too - though they did slyly match her up nicely [as is done in the book, but with someone else].
so enjoyable. such great battle. so many wow moments. didn't cry at all, but the Faramir - Denethor stuff almost got me - brilliant acting and pace there. ouch.

We saw it yesterday after work- brilliant. I liked the ending, my other half hated it. She thought it could've ended perfectly well when Aragorn says "my friends, you bow to nothing..." and I'll give her partial credit for that, but I think it really rounds the story out, and gives you a real sense of how life will go on for the Hobbits. Warm fuzzies. Yeah and I nearly cried a couple of times. It's a powerful film.

the rape of the shire, poisoning of its waters and the chopping down of the shire trees seemed to me to be tolkiens most evocative reminder about his hate for machines and the pollution and corruption of nature that they bring, which is a recurring theme in the lord of the rings...
plus its a real good contrast to the hobbits at the start of the film and the hobbits at the end of it, after only one year

saruman takes over through lobelia (is that her name) he starts to poison the shire by building foul machines like in Orthanc...
the hobbits return and find the dhire in chaos, they round up all the hobbits they can find, winning with few casualties, saruman is found out and sent away, he reveals that wormtounge killed lotho (the Boss of the shire), wormtounge turns on saruman and knifes him
the hobbits who surround him fill him with arrows

i went to the crew screening on tuesday, i thought it was great, but the general consensus of those who hadnt worked on it was the second film was better. the end drags.... much like it does in the book. and my personal opinion were that the fight scenes weren't as cool as in the 2nd movie... but yeah.... still a brilliant piece of work.

i just saw it before, and well what can i say?? amazing, breathtaking, woww. it was defionately the best of the 3 and Peter Jackson is a legend. just two things wrong with it thou.
1) when merry and pippen are with the ents they are ment to drink the forest water etc wich helps things grow, this making them taller than normal hobbits
2)wasnt saruman ment to go destroy the shire under the name sharky??
i havnt read the books for about a year now so i may be wrong, but still amazing

yummy yummy, good idea there Jon ... great p.o.v ... it's great epic stuff, would be a good CG orientated flick. some big big tragic stuff happens. but yeah, hard to give it all a centre, unless it was someone involved with all the politics/war from the start.

I really, really liked the movie up to the point that the ghost army came along and wiped everything out. From that point on it went up and down. Much better paced than the second movie but I'll really need to see the Extended version before proper judgement can be bestowed.
Not much else to say except that Master and Commander trailer is badly edited and looks really budge but I hear the movie is good.

i really like the director, Peter Weir. i think they're making the flick out, in the trailers, to be all bombast and hero stuff, but i'm hoping Weir will add a little more plot and deep .. uh .. stuff .. mind you, i'd go for the bombast and hero stuff.

I've just witnessed it and am a wee bit disappointed...I mean, 5 stars from Russel Baillie (sp?) and it must be phenomenal. For me everything seemed a bit too easy to get everyone alright again. It's little things that annoyed me like how the Witch King was kind of undervalued...I mean, I think he died a bit too easily because in the books that is like a big turning point but in the film it was slightly understated.
Also the way that Shelob kind of just wussed off when she was fighting Sam. That is meant to be a big fuck off angry spider...
Don't get me wrong it was still really fucking cool...but certain cheesy elements brought me down a bit (ie- doorway scene).

i loved it, but also felt really gutted at the end, and a bit confused. it sucks that there's no more of these movies to look forward to. i cried.
