Forums: NZ Music,

One major thing that's happened in 2003 is the explosion of New Zealand hip-hop.

It burst right through into the charts, with Scribe at one stage simultaneously holding the number one album and single spots.

The Deceptikonz, Mareko, the Dubious Brothers, Scribe, P Money, Ill Semantics, King Kapisi were all there, and even 3 The Hard Way made a comeback.

In some ways it can just be explained away by the fact that hip-hop was huge worldwide this year, but there's also a feeling that the scene here is unique, and the top NZ MCs aren't just a bunch of wannabe Jay-Zs and Ja Rules.

There were a few clunky moments - Mareko's debut solo single "Here to stay" featured a tuneless, clumsy, un-shoutalong-able chorus ("All I know is that my name is now here to stay - Mareko!"), betraying his reputation as one of NZ's top freestyle MCs. But he was back on the money with the follow single, "Stop, drop and roll", this time with the rest of the Deceptikonz.

And of course there was scribe with his bonafide hit "Not Many". For a few weeks it seemed that everywhere I went I'd here someone rapping along with the chorus.

There's still some room for improvement. NZ is coming close to perfecting hip-hop, but doesn't do R&B at all well (D2S came close, but ultimately fell back into imitative cliche). Maybe 2004 will see a bit of Pharrell/Beyonce/Justin magic rub off over here. Oh, I do hope so.

I never thought I'd see the day...but maybe nz idol will reveal a few potentials.

"Stop Drop and Roll" was a originally a Deceptikonz track (as opposed to Mareko feat. Deceptikonz) and came out on a Dawn Raid mix tape prior to the single release of "Mareko (here to stay)". Channel Z picked up "Stop Drop and Roll" and it proved so popular that it was included on Mareko's album 'White Sunday' as the new Deceptikonz album was a way off at the time.

Interesting that a rock station like Z could pick a hip hop hit so well and help launch it to being released as a full blown hit single.

one word, scribe.

I must say accoustic artists have managed to nibble their way into the limelight.

I know you hate pop Lucy but they have pushed through.

We can only hope and pray Pop will Die suddenly and violently in 2004.

Bring on the 1967-71 period of Power Driven Heavy Psych-Rock and the Conceiving of Metal and Punk. I Do hope that 204 will bring a Psych-Metal-Punk revival.
