Win 2 Big Day Out 2004 Passes

This topic is for entries to win 2 x BDO 2004 passes:

The Rules:
Name 3 bands you believe should be at next years (2005) line up and the reasons why. The best line-up and reasons will win. (Bands need to be 'likely' to play - so no 'Beatles' entries thanks). Enter as many times as you like.

Winners will be announced on this topic early Jan.

Forums: NZ Music,

the three bands chosen should be:

1) Mother Guru (nelson, nz)
No idea why they haven't been chosen for the last two bdo's, they are a local band with a huge amount of talent and potential. Unlike many other bands their sound is fresh and original, and they stage presence is one to be feared. They are always the highlight of nelson's new years festival (the cusp), consistantly upstaging bigger name playing after them thanks to a great live act. Beyond that, as a group they contribute greatly to nelson's music scene, which I can honestly say is 100% centred around the band.

2) Queens of the Stone Age
After the dissapointment of having their set cut short last bdo in auckland, I feel the bdo tour deserves to ask them back. The band has stated many times that the BDO is their favorite tour and would certainly jump at the chance :) In my eyes the queens are best hard rock band actively touring at the moment, and with a new album coming next year they will definately have a new batch of songs to get the auckland crowd moving.

3) Fu Manchu

Fu Manchu are one of the worlds most active heavy rockers around, they combine their appreciation of all the good things in life, surf, partying, suped up vans, roadtrips and other things slightly less legal in a form of hard hitting groove rock. They have a formidible live act, proven by their latest release, a two disk live album and have caught the eye of nz music channels as their latest single "squash that fly" has been onair quite abit lately. It's always good to have some underdogs and fu manchu could certainly bring a great unknown quantity to the bdo and rock the show.

cheers, Kim
(rock on)

3 bands should be:

U2
What can i sa, they are among the best bands in the world, and when were the last time they were here? After watching U2 live at Slane Castle on TV, U2 is a must.

Rammstein
Some people may not be able to understand what they sing, but they have an awesome pyro show. I saw them back in 2001 and they are one of the best live acts ive seen, especially in an open stage, these guys are hell awesome.

Weezer
these guys are great, they have releasd many great albumns but they have never been to NZ, i dont think theyve ever been down this part of the world, i world love to see these guys at the next BDO

I'd like to see:

#1) Outkast: As a new fan of theirs, i'd love to see them play live and i definitely think the BDO is the only place to see all the best bands play at one gig. Love the new Outkast stuff so i'd really really love to see them play at the BDO. I'd definitely go then!

#2) The Foo Fighters: I know they came last time but i would absolutely, absolutely not miss them for the world. I was in awe last time (the only time i ever dreamt i'd see them) and i would be sooo ecstatic if i got the chance to see them again. They friggin rocked! I could not wait to see them and was totally blown away by them!

and #3) Electric 6: I'm not usually a keen fan of dance music (having never really been in the boiler room before) but i'd defintiely be stoked to see Electric 6 play in there. Awesome songs, and pretty good vids to go with them! I'd definitely have to go in there and have a boogie.

...i wanna take you to a gay bar, gay bar... :)

Incubus - By the time 2005 rolls around it would have been nearly 3 years since there last trip under, plus with the new album due for relase about march next year they will have flashy new matieral to show to us. They have amazing energy and are absolutly flawless performers. They would fit nicely into the 7pm (ish) time slot that when the temperature is starting to cool off and the crowld feels like a mixture of Singing there hearts out and jumping up and down.

APC - Fans were absoultly devisated when APC pulled out 2004's big day out, they have a cult following and will pull a enthusiastic crowld into one of the headlineing main stage slots for an emotional set.

Odessa - Wellington funk gods, slightly biased here as im a huge fan but this Wellington band would work a green stage crowld into a dance, mosh, and grove extraviganza!!! Odessa would give people who want a break from the heaver rock at above 3pm a chance to mellow and reflect on what makes New Zealand music great.

AC/DC - Because this is the best balls-out rock band anyone could ever hope to experience, they wrote the rules and are everything live music should be about. the more kids influenced by this band the better off music will be in the future.

Pacifier - Easily still the best live rock band in NZ, always a favorite among the locals. can stand beside (and usually above) any international act playing on the day. It's just not the same without them.

Def Leppard - The Def-ones, The Deffs, whatever! This band was made for arena rock. they are still touring and selling out venues to this day. I've heard that they have been opening with the first side of High And Dry in its entirety, i mean who the hell does that? this band will lay down the challenge and wipe the floor with the youngsters.

seriously in all rockness, none of your guys bands have anything on mine. admit it!

i was going to include electronic and hip hop in my choices, but the topic says 'bands'

Guided By Voices - they usually play three hour shows, so to condense it down to a mere 45 min would be a challenge for them. Still, they'd fit in around 15 songs, and they put on the most high energy drunken show in the world..

Le Tigre - nothing like angry feminist yelling to end the show - probably on the second stage however as not everyone will understand. dripping with dance beats and accusatory vocals, they'll be a must-see

the Brunettes - Can't think aof a dreamier, better band to play mid afternoon, as the sun beats down and the beer is flowing. And it'll pick everyone up and make em happy for the night to come..

hell yes for le tigre.

Ash - Everyone has most probably heard an ash song and tapped their feet or nodded their head to it without realising how stupid they look. Ash have some catchy tunes, and Masaki - if Weezer don't make it down this way - then I heard that Ash do a great "only in dreams" cover. Besides, they have a girl gat player, and that's got to be good for ya.

Travis, we have had coldplay, so how about good ol' travis, they have just released their new album (which has had mixed reviews - all the more reason to make up our own minds...) Besides, they can play the banjo...and well....and that is kinda cool.

Pilot - Gotta pick an NZ band - and I just couldn't resist naming this one. heh... anyway...NZ hasn't really heard much of these guys yet and they should...BDO 2005 could be a great showcase...and you won't be disapointed.

Blindspott- because their music is so original and they are very talented, and very true to their music

Scribe- because his music is also very original he has a good personality, very kiwi, and for someone to have hip hop at number well he must be doing something right

Outkast- because they would rock the stage, and get the crowd moving they look fun, and know how to show people a god time

Weezer - This band has been one of my favourites since the first album came out. Everyone who isn't living in a barn somewhere knows at least some Weezer material, and everyone seems to like it. The best thing about these guys is the way they've just gotten better the further thay've gone. They've recently gone completely over the top with their live show - many lights and pyro and their name in huge neon lights - and that is something that must be seen... a pop band with balls of metal.

Desapreciados - The young man behind Bright Eyes has been putting out albums since he was 16, and his latest Bright Eyes albums have gained huge critical and popular acclaim. As bright eyes most often a quiet, reflective act, I think that The Desapreciados would be an excellent idea for a Big Day Out. The same huge songwriting talent working in a rock format... some of the most interesting rock around, with a brilliant tortured soul frontman.

The International Noise Conspiracy - Since Refused split into its various factions, TINC has been the one that people have noticed. Their rock/pop music is energetic, with a wickedly intelligent and amusing lyricist, a strong band image and a reputedly wicked live show. They've had some fairly big singles, and would be a wonderful band to see next to my favourite locals.

... also... the desapreciados and TINC probably wouldn't cost too much to have performing :)

Voom - if you think the the whitestripes are good... mutha f**ka you an't seen nothing. At night on the main stage with a great light show or don't bother

The slips - cause Mac used to be in Voom

Heather Nove - cause I love Heather Nova

ps. do I get points for not nominating my own band....?!

*whispering* (so as to not interupt thread/topic)
"if you like voom...you should know that they are playing tonight..."

*sneaks away and out of thread/topic...*

yeah I know

1. The Twilight Singers

2. The Twilight Singers

3. The Twilight Singers

Because it's the sexiest, darkest, grittyest most visceral, soulfull, groove laden music there is right now!
and to my knowledge GD has never performed in NZ (or has he?) which is a crying shame cause I saw the Afghan Whigs in London one time and it blew my mind.

i rekin...
Audioslave - would rock cos they would b awesome to see live cos theyve got chris cornells distinctive voice and the power of rage.
Greenday - because they have classic hits like 'time of ur life' and 'basket case' that evry1 knows and enjoys.
Eminem - would blow the roof off the hip hop stage and attract many fans from all over NZ.

I Like the sounds of your line up Audioslave do rock especially with the sound of Chris Cornell and Eminem is da S**t who would definenety rock! and Greenday rock too especially there old stuff.

Queens Of The Stone Age (again 03) cause they piked out of jan 04 stop over.
and we decerve to see them with out PA cutouts!!
------------------------
Cody Chestnut, I wanna see how good he looks in Leather and if he plays up to the (I've got a big black cock & thats all your gonna get!!)
Oh and plus would'nt it be wicked to chuck some funked up s@#t in the dance/rock mix.?
-------------------------------------------------------
thirdly: The Red Hot Chilli Peppers!
what more can i say just Hell Yeah not one song a hit & miss forget Foo Fighters & Metallica (no offence but how diverse is the fan base of RHCP? Jane's addiction i think so)
if that was the main line up "here take my right arm, even my left."...
also chuck in Fat Freddys Drop, Trinity Roots, Daja Voodoo, The Anals, the coolies, Evolver and every other band on the face of NZ and you've got a WINNER!!
hahahahahaha just the thught of it eh?

everytime i die (1)this country and you people in it will finally come to the conclusion that you pretty much listen to shit bands who have no stage presence or write exciting songs but this band when you finally hear them is going to rip shit up inside your boring little brains
converge (2)another of the current wave of decent original heavy as hell bands that just annihilate anything going on in today's so called undergroundand glassjaw just cause they have awesome riffs

// this country and you people in it will finally come to the conclusion that you pretty much listen to shit bands who have no stage presence or write exciting songs

ok, no more entrys, we have a winner.

1. Idlewild. I would be really keen to see Idlewild play, to represent Scottish pride. Also they are a nice easy straight forward rock band who would suit the environment of the BDO perfectly. They don't take themselves excessivly seriously which means they will also give us a great deal of fun. And they also would insprire us to read more, because they themselves are heavily inspired by Literature, so I do believe the country's literacy rate would increase dramatically if Idlewild played. Helen is already onside.

2. Dave Matthews. (And his band...). Dave Matthews is great, I think he'd provide a great contrast to all the guitar rock bands that are likely to be at the BDO. It'd be good to have a semi-oddball like Dave. It's also nice to hear songs that have alot of thought put into them and big DM can do that. I think people will also appreciate the variety of musical instruments used and may help decrease the number of 3 chords guitar players.

3. Jakob. Jakob would be wicked to see on the main stage with a big fuck off sound system that the they can blow up. I think Jakob at night, with a wicked light system would be phenomenal. People will probably all end up in interesting head-spaces and so everybody is going to hugging each other and will greatly increase the love at the big day out. Which is something that has been lacking at previous BDO's.

bjork- she would be amazing live.

radiohead- they need to come to nz again.

the pixies- i heard these guys are back together . great band

Travis: since there was a rumor that i had heard floating around that they were hopefully playing this years BDO and that was false unfortunately, their due back here for a concert!

The White Stripes: it would be wicked to see them live i haven't seen them over the last couple of times they have been here but friends have seen them live and were totally blown away by the energy and sound of a 2 piece band live.

The WBC: these guys are an awesome new kiwi band i believe they will be huge soon! good on them for going out and achieving airplay for their fantastic new single!

You Am I - One of Australias most popular and best loved RocknRoll bands, they've opened for many a brilliant band like the Rolling Stones, and have given many recent and commercially popular young bands a push in the right direction and a chance by choosing them as supports like The Vines and The Strokes.
They've got a back catologue the size of an Australian outback road train and are a truely fantastic live band.

Hailing from New York city, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, who as I understand are yet to set foot upon New Zealand shores. I had the pleasure of seeing these guys play in Australia, and even though Karen had suffered a nasty fall the night before they were still absolutely engaging and fantastic.
They put so much emotion into their music and it's a shame that many New Zealanders haven't seen their powerful and compelling live show yet.

Finally, New Zealands own Rock n Roll Machine.
I bought Pump Gas a few months back and I have not stopped listening to it since (except of course, for when I'm listening to the YYY's or You Am I :P) They're a brilliant contemporary rock band who truely bring their own thang to the genre. I've yet to have the pleasure of witnessing this bands reputable, and (so I've heard) amazing live performance, but I'm absolutely sure when I do it wont be something I regret.
You should give this band a slot on the BDO so that they can reach a further range of audience, which is beneficial both for them and for the people who haven't heard of them yet. If Pump Gas is anything to go by, then their live shows would most certainly be if anything, blistering.

1) INCUBUS, because they will be releasing there 4th full length album in early Feb, which just like there last albums will have a fresh new sound, and they have a new bass player Ben Kenney (formerly from 'The Roots'), who has jazzed things up for the band. There music is enjoyed by a huge range of people and there live show is amazing.

2)Rancid, because they are by far one of the best Punk bands around, with influences like the clash, the ramones and the sex pistols, your garaunted a true punk rock show....unlike the absolute shitty! pop/punk/emo bands created these days. Rancids raw punk/ska sound couldnt be more perfect for an afternoon slot at BDO. They released there latest album 'Indestructable' this year and have a huge list of classic songs such as 'Timebomb', Ruby Soho, ....theres just to many. They regulary tour 'Warped Tour' and would be a great band to add to a diverse line up at BDO. (BDO should just makesure they dont book The Distillers aswell!!).

3)Coldplay, im not the biggest fan but i do enjoy stealing it from my mum now and then and just relax out to there music (not saying its for the oldies). They played at BDO in 2001 and since then has released 'Parashutes' which is a great album. Im not sure if i would pay lots of money to see them by themselves but i think it would be really cool if they played just before the main act or something, lots of people would enjoy it.

1. Jet - In the 70's, I used to adore going to see bands with the same sound as Jet, when I was a teenager. Thrity years later , my youngest daughter loves Jet. I would love to pretend I was seventeen again, and dance alongside my seventeen year old daughter (if she would let me of course!). It would be a fantastic memory trigger.

2.The Kings of Leon - Yes, I am aware that they are playing at next years big day out festival. However, their country blues, rock and roll style of music is so uplifting and fun, and I would love to see them two years in a row... as long as my girls stay away form the four young lads! People could dance around and sing at the top of their lungs, if they are able to they could try and husk their voice so it sounds like their whiskey and ciggerettes drawl. It would make people forget their problems and just focus on fun and youth.

3. Santana - His music will never, ever age.It is my opinion that as many young people as possible need to be exposed to this marvelous musicians music. He performs with explicit soul and feeling, it could be a religious experience for all that see him.

Dianne the mum is a great user name. I wish you were my mum.

Well that is very nice of you to say, Deputy.

Spritulized - They would teach those trucker cap wearin fools a thing or two about ultra-sonic space-rock artistry. Would be a thoroughly enjoyable raping of the ear canals.

Interpol - Because they're not one of those bands that aren't going to be cool next week. Unlike all the 'the' bands.

The Warlocks - One of those 'the' bands that actually are fucking quite good. The dual drummer rock fest from 'nam. sweeeeeeet.

THE CAT EMPIRE AU Big Stage about Noon.

Where the hip-hop community dance to Gypsy, the jazz purists jump to hip-hop, the Latinos bop to reggae, the rastas shake to latin, the elderly sweat to funk, the youth swing to dancehall, and everyone wakes up a little happier.
From Melborne & starting to enjoy some commercial success. These guys will have a scorcher this summer in Australia.

CORNERSTONE ROOTS NZ Smaller Stage evening.(maybe an earlier slot in the big top)

Organic, Coastal, refreshing revival of the old school reggae vibe. Environmentally friendly & if their first album is anything to go by, soul food for the ears.

FIGWIT NZ or Brendon Lovegrove/Radar….

Now it has always been my pet hate, that we line up at the gates of the BDO, all pumped up & rearing to go, the anticipation , adventure & excitement. Then you hang around in the heat waiting to be checked etc & then to go in the gates & this can be anywhere up to an hour, then there is this old bloke who starts ranting on. He is probably a trotting official. What would be more fun is, a stage with some comedy or some hard case commentary going on at the gates. The above spring to mind, hell even the Havo & Newsboy will do.

Okay, ....so thats not really a stage performance entry I supposed so how about....

OZZY bloody OZBOURNE & Black Sabbath
As we watch ozzy become more & more senile & demented with each MTV episode at the hands of his wife & demon spawn, with his credibility slipping further beyond recovery, I would like to see Black Sabbath in full glory give the youth of today a taste of the legend.

1. Linkin Park - Because from the concert fortage i've seen before they look like they would seroiously Rock and they are a great band with really great music.

2. Finger Eleven - Even though these guys are new i rekon by next year they will really take off and they will be heard everyewhere and yeah i know there coming with evanescence at the start of nexy year and i would really love to go but i can't afford it.

3. Nickelback - These guys are Awesome there music is so different they have good songs some mellow and some rocker and there songs really have good meaning if you listen to them i love these guys.

Cya Nat Christrchurch

are you crazy??

well...what would pick?

ummm...What would YOU pick...sorry...

Creed, Atomic Kitten & Westlife ;)

if u like linkin park. u should know that they arn't making anymore cd's becuz chester is losing hes voice so it would b quiet hard 4 them 2 play

YAY!!

*cough* replacement *cough*, it doesnt take to much talent to moan about your childhood

Tomahawk: Oh god yes please! The makers of arguably 2003's best hard rock album decide not to come here on tour.

Then Fantomas take the stage. Yeah, mike patton's having a big day :) this will probably start a riot.

finally, Mr Bungle unnoficially reform after their unoficial breakup to play BDO. mike patton dies of exhastion :)

Somebody wants to suck Mike Patton . . .

hey go easy, after missing the fantomas/melvins/tomahawk show i'd be rapt to have 3 patton acts at the BDO!

1. Tom Waits - he hardly ever plays live, and hasn't been down to this part of the world - well, Australia, at least - for ages. The BDO would be a great excuse to get him down here, as well as a great opportunity for us Kiwi Waitsheads to see the man live for the first time in our merry green land. He'll make a terrific headliner.

2. The Wrens - these guys have been around for ages, but are virtually unknown down here. They have become critical darlings following the release of their superb album The Meadowlands, a record that alternates between alt country balladry and classic indie-guitar rock. They're a great band that deserve more recognition.

3. Johnny Clegg - hey, we've had Yothu Yindi, let's bring over Johnny Clegg. He is a white South African musician who, together with his bands Juluka and Savuka, has combined elements of Western pop/rock with traditional Zulu tribal music (he used to be a lecturer in Anthropology). He has also flown in the face of the previous South African regime by leading mixed-race bands and he is a world-class songwriter to boot. He will be an interesting addition, especially for fans of "World Music".

ok- lets see if i got this strait- you wanna bring a WHITE guy over to play world music- you think a WHITE guy- half-donning a BLACK AFRICAN musical cloak- would be a- er... cool bit of world music at the bdo- a WHITE guy- singing WHITELY- strumming WHITELY- playing a WHITEY version of black music- dancing a WHITEY version of a black dance

¿why doesnt johnny pull back & let his black bandmates take centre stage?- ¿why doesnt johnny let his black singers take the lead vocals in his song?- ¿why does he have to show off his 'zulu' dance on videos?- cos hes an egotistical little WHITEY prick

i think- seeing as world music= non western- namerican- british- european- non WHITE music- it would be nice to NOT HAVE a WHITE guy up on stage as the world music act- + on top of that johnny makes absolutely awful music- even by white standards- you should be ashamed

music is not about colour

o honestly rat munter- fuck off until you understand what im talkin bout- tin kisser

//i think- seeing as world music= non western- namerican- british- european- non WHITE music-

Is that not racist in itself. "Hate Whitey" and all. Are you advocating musical apartheid lena?

¿¿¿DO YOU HONESTLY NOT UNDERSTAND MY POINT???... ¿¿¿¿WHAT????- ¿¿¿¿¿ARE YOU THICK?????

LOOK I CAN TYPE IN CAPS TOO!

GOOD BOY... NOW YOU JUST NEED TO WORK ON WRITING SOMETHING INTELLIGENT... O BTW... WAITS IS A FAKE
