well the only one i can think of at the moment is "no one knows" by queens of the stone age
dont know why, but i was addicted to that song for ages. its so great
Well, basically the entire Elphant album by the White Stripes - undoubtedly the best album released this year and one of the best of the decade so far.
Ryan Adam's aptly-titled Rock N Roll is a fun, well, rock album. You could say that it is a tribute to the the genre in a way, as he covers a range of rock styles including new wave, pop-punk, glam, grunge, indie - all with a slightly self-effacing air. Don't look for anything particularly deep, but it is an enjoyable album, with some classy tunes.
The Stroke's Room On Fire is brilliant. I liked Is This It, but this is blows it out of the water. It still has that same New York art-punk sound, but the songs are more-developed this time around, and better pound for pound.
One album that was recommended to me, and which I have subsequently bought is The Meadowlands by US Indie band The Wrens. The whole thing has a laid-back indie sound, with some alt-country influences and a smidge of all-out rock. Think of Wilco's unsurpassable Yankee Hotel Foxtrot minus the static. This is a lesser album, of course, but it has moments of beauty. It may not sound exceptional on the first few listens, but stick to it, the songs gradually get under your skin. Seek it out.
And then there's Mary Star Of The Sea by Zwan, who have now unfortunately split - it would've been interesting to see how they would've evolved. Sure, it's mostly post-grunge guitar music, some of it recalling some of the Pumpkins' more melodic moments, but there are about three or four classic songs here. I felt happy that Corgan had shed the excess that had characterised some of the Pumpkins' later work and had opted for a simpler sound. I wonder what's next?
Um I'm looking for stuff a little more under the radar than WS, Radiohead, Mars Volta types - new stuff not obvious stuff...
Here's the CD tracklisting for my summer journeys so far. Keep in mind this is just the Guitar/Indie Pop/Pop Rock/Metal CD. It's not the Indie, Noise cool one (thats another topic)
