// pay your own way
for real? haha. that sucks. This ain't the US man. Artists here don't "pay to play"...
I am worried about what sort of bollocks precident this could set.
no doubt you will find someone who will ...
no doubt you will find someone who will unfortunately agree to this. I hope they suck though, cause this sets a real bad example and is not the path we should be heading down. It also makes AAF look like cunts. Fuckloads of great International acts with smaller followings come here and have the honour to pay their support acts.
its not so much "payment" that most ...
its not so much "payment" that most bands will be looking for, but for fucks sake, at least give the lucky bastards som petrol money.
common, really? are you serious, mr promoter?
It's a great chance for a local act to ...
It's a great chance for a local act to get exposure nationally to a large audience which is good payment enough in some respects. I hear your concerns though about a bad precendent being set. We just can't afford to fly and accomodate another band around NZ. They are toying with the idea of doing a tour for next to nothing, which means a small budget tour and ticket prices would be low as part of the deal. However if we secure decent sponsorship then things may change but at this stage I guess we are asking for volunteers. We may end up getting local support from each centre instead. Just ideas at this stage, keep your shirt on!

even biggish new zealand bands pay for local support bands. you will not get a decent support band for free, although you might get a bunch of rich schoolkids. my shirt is off.
hmmmm....I would assume that AAF won't ...
hmmmm....I would assume that AAF won't be lending their backline in a hurry, so for a band of 4 members to cart their entire backline accross the country crossing the strait and paying for petrol would cost around $800. That doesn't even include accomodation.
Why don't you have a talk to "mystery girl" she brings over bands ALL THE TIME with much smaller followings then AAF and always pays support bands
if you want a band to play for free in their home town, yeah, cool. Alot of bands would LEAP at the chance to play a good support, not caring about money...but asking a band to pay $1000 to play shows is rude.

//We may end up getting local support ...
//We may end up getting local support from each centre instead.
I appreciate the sentiment of keeping ticket prices low; and getting local support's probably a better idea. The higher profile bands probably don't need a support slot enough to shell out the transport costs, the lower profile bands probably couldn't justify the high cost of crossing the strait.
<sigh> whiplash....
whiplash.
// to a large audience if its such ...
// to a large audience
if its such a large audience...surely AAF can afford to pay the support band some token amount
I'm not trying to put you off bringing them over...they'll probably sell out all their shows, NZers are notorious for having bad taste :) But please ask them to show our bands some respect
hotgossip - can you tell us alittle ...
hotgossip - can you tell us alittle about your self? I think you might be telling a wee lie about this tour. There are so many wannabes in this country and esp. the music industry. How do you have the chance to work with this band? what else has your company done? how long have you been in the music industry?
I want to belive you, but I'm finding it had too. as the music scene gets bigger here so many new players are jumping on the band wagon (no pun intended). I've meet so many people lately that think they are promoters, mangaers, record labels. It is not good for our music scene when all these little players keep coming on board trying to grab a bit of the lime light. It is doing more damage than good.
By you offering a chance to play is great and even the band paying their own way is fine (because that is how it works in NZ) and will be of great benefit to who ever.
but I think you don't have any chance of working with AAF and i think what you are really doing is trying to get young bands to send you their stuff so you can try and work with them, manage them, promote them. Thius would be ok - but you are just doing it to try and become a big shot manger!
prove me wrong - i hope you can
I want nz music to grow
grassroots - that is not the way nz ...
grassroots - that is not the way nz works. from reading your previous posts it looks like you still attend school, and no problem with that but dude spend a couple more years in the industry and you will see that it aint no fairy tale once you're out on your own - if the bands put the time and effort in to the music then chances are they won't be able to pay their own way around the country without some help. and you might also learn that that is not the way nz works - people will and do pay support bands - it happens, trust me. and if you want the nz music scene to grow (as you stipulate) then you might need to realise that all this will do (as mentioned previously) is set a precedent which could in turn fuck new zealand bands in the arse.

and just out of curiousity - do you two (grass roots and hot gossip) know each other?
No I don't know grassroots. Here's ...
No I don't know grassroots.
Here's the guts. The band want to play for bugger all, but there are costs involved of course to get them here, international & domestic travel etc. so of course there is some initial outlay from our end for which ticket sales are vital to make this at least break even. They can either perform alone, or as they requested, it would be cool to perfom with some unknown local talent.
The offer to a local support act is this: if the band like your sound, they would ask you along on the whole tour... if the band can finance their own way around as there's little or no money to fly them around and accomodate them. The tour would be four shows in four days at this stage, so it's a bit of a whirlwind schedule. The budget is extremely tight as we are intending on selling cheap tickets. Otherwise we'll give them demos of bands from each centre to consider instead. Going by the reaction I'm getting so far, maybe thats a better idea - part of the reason for the original post. We have had some bigger NZ acts interested in doing the tour with the support of their record company, but thats not the initial idea of this tour.
They don't want to go with a big promoter, these guys are friends of ours and just want to have a working holiday. It would be great fun for any local band to be involved with this tour, they're a great bunch of guys. They do have a new guitarist which they are blooding at the mo, which is part of the reason for the guys wanting to come here I think.
Noone is trying to rip anyone off here, and it's still just an idea. They do respect NZ bands, which is why they want to come and do some shows with some up-and-coming NZ bands. It's not about money, and we do obviously realise that it costs for bands to travel around NZ! Bands could look at approaching sponsors to help them (sensible idea), or just save hard for ther next few months to take advantage of possibly a great opportunity.
you sound reasonable....perhaps you ...
you sound reasonable....perhaps you should just look for a local support in each town..thus giving four bands an international support and not ripping off a young band.
I'm happy that they are looking for local unsigned bands to support, that is commendable...however, PLENTY of international acts come over and do small, cheap ($25) ticket shows and still pay their support acts.
I think everyones advice to you is to definately look for 4 different local supports. This is much more fair, and I'm sure there will be some excited bands who won't mind playing for free cause it won't cost them anything.....cheeky for an international band to do this...but you'll find plenty of bands who will leap at the chance.
Ill agree with everyone else and ...
Ill agree with everyone else and suggest that you go with 4 local bands as oposed to one band to tour.
The only possible way a local band could even think about doing 4 shows in 4 days would be if they utilised AAF's backline - the cost of a band transporting themselves from one end of the country to the other in 4 days is high enough but if they are having to both organise, and pay for the shipping of gear it sounds like more hassel then it would be worth.
Im going to take the bait here and put Snubnoise forward for consideration for a Wellington show - tell me what to do.
Cheers

That'll be a better option than the box number as I'm off for a break and I wont be clearing the box til January. I'll then forward it to AAFs management.
That's great news! AAF are great, ...
That's great news! AAF are great, although they tend to get slagged off by most everyone due to the whole Smooth Criminal thing, which was more the record companies fault rather than there own (as seems to happen a lot, with bands who do covers getting forced to release them as singles).
Whatever, I'm excited about this.
Although what size venues are they looking at playing? Like, Indigo? or Town Hall? Love to see them somewhere smaller.... and Truant doesn't seem to have been particularly popular.
alien ant farm are playing orientation ...
alien ant farm are playing orientation in february. is this tour planned before, during, or after? because if it's around the same time they will surely be flown out by nzcan.
anyone?...
anyone?
Yes, this is the NZCAN tour and it's ...
Yes, this is the NZCAN tour and it's all on. AAF are now 99.9% certain of doing the Edgefest tour also which has changed the climate a little but now it also means that tickets prices for students to the NZCAN shows will be cheaper - in all the centres that the Edgefest and NZCAN clash anyway. We still want your demos if your band wants to submit one for consideration for playing support on the tour. Island of Real Entertainment is acting on behalf of NZCAN soley for this purpose only, and are not producing the tour, although one of the NZCAN members who is involved in producing the tour does run IOR Ent.
NZCAN AAF tour dates are: Dunedin 3rd March, ChCh 4th, AK 5th, & Well 6th. BRING IT!
are applications for these support ...
are applications for these support slots still being accepted? and were any decisions made on where bands would be doing the whole tour or local dates?
There has been a decision made about ...
There has been a decision made about that - from the submitted applications, two bands will be doing the whole tour with AAF, however we are still looking at taking an unknown act on the bill to do support in each centre with the other two.
Does that mean one more band is going ...
Does that mean one more band is going to be selected from the applications for the entire tour?
so they're gonna tour outside of that ...
so they're gonna tour outside of that crappy Edgefest? They should bring Yellowcard with them on that tour too...
