I wanted trumpets and slide guitars. I got trumpets and slide guitars and percussion and accordions and loads of cool shit. It was great ensemble musicianship.
I was particularly looking forward to Black Heart which they started off by playing Ohio (Crosby Stills Nash & Young) then segueing into Black Heart. Trying to say something about Bush maybe?
One depressing moment, the singer looks at the groupies getting jiggly and says "Well, that's Wellington for you!" and I thought, man when you were in Sydney you probably said "Well, that's Sydney for you!" and when you're in Auckland you'll say "Well, that's Auckland for you" and wherever you go you say "Well that's [whatever frickin' town it is today] for you!"
It's enough to make me wonder if I really wanna be a rock star. They looked like they enjoyed playing, just had a worrying level of professional detatchment.
I was bouncing off the walls, and the wait for them to start was unbearable... And they were all I could have hoped for and more. All the songs I wanted, the instruments I wanted and the energy I wanted. If they were setting out to please only me, then they succeeded.
Urban Tramper was very cool. Love the voice and love the songs.
Ghostplane were excellent. Crowd sitting down, pretty songs floating everywhere, then some rocking out. All executed beautifully.
*sigh* They played twice in Melbourne (once in support for Nick Cave) and somehow I failed to go to either. Oh well, I saved some money I guess. :| Meh.
