Guitarists - what effects do you use

Im kinda knew here so sorry if this has been done before but im interested to know what effects people are using.

Some think the subject is kinda taboo and keep their effect choice private but i think it would interesting to know whats being used out their.

Im pretty loyal to boss and currently use

BF-2 Flanger
HM-?? Hyper Metal

next step will either be a Boss DD-3 digital delay or one of thoese funky DOD envelope filters,

Peace,

Mark

Forums: NZ Music,

Uh effects are cool if you know how to use them right.

I'm currently using a Hot Cake Pedal, Electro Harmonix Memory Man, Electro Harmonix Big Muff and a MXR Phase.

Yah for vintage

Well, I picked up a 2nd-hand DOD Digi Delay / Sampler in Auckland on a whim a few years ago, and it ended up being my staple guitar effect in my last band for 3 odd years - perhaps to the point of being overdone however! I also used a Boss Chorus II on some earlier songs for that early 90's grunge feel, but haven't had the need for it over the last 2 years. I also use a Boss 6-band EQ for that little bit of extra bass "grunt", or as a third channel on my Marshall to create a nice fuzzy mid-distortion in between the nice jangly clean and the blow-yer-head-off JCM900 overdrive. Way way back in the day I used to own a little Zoom digi effects unit, but had to sell it to make rent :-( Still wish I had that now - most of the guitar simulations were crap, but you could create some wierd and wonderful soundscapes and random noises when it was fully cranked up.

zoom 606...

I think mine was the 505 - it was pretty cool for it's time. Where are you now...

what u mean by that?! ANyway, i also use a boss metalzone distortion pedal.

2x hotcake- full gain- 1 w/ midlift on- 1 w/ midlift off
1x prunes & custard- full gain & mix
1x dod fx94- on sample & repeat
1x roland se 201 w/ pedal
1x holden graphic 60 w/ trem full + pedal
1x duo concentric 7" + 15" speaker

everybody look at the drummer having a fantasy.

Awesome thread... guitar geeks unite!!

Zoom Ultra Fuzz UF-01... quite possibly the coolest fuzz box ever IMHO. Nothing quite like it, except maybe the Z-vex Fuzz Factory ($$$).
Danelectro French Toast octave/distortion... the other coolest fuzz box ever. Basically same as the Foxx circuit Hendrix used ($$$).
DOD combination Wah/Volume... has presets for sweep range and 'Q' to adjust the sweetspot..

Have used:
Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer... a little too vanilla sounding by itself, but great as a gain booster (if not a little noisy..)
Boss DS1 distortion... very boxy sounding to my ears, but I know some people dig it.
Tech 21 XXL... awesome fuzzbox. Has the Butthole Surfers lead sound. Unfortunately mine was stolen, along with...
Ibanex FL9... this would be easy to recognise if you found it because I'd removed all the yellow paint on it. The coolest swirly flanger sounds I have ever heard, with the exception of...
Dunlop Univibe... only ever tried it out at the music store. I will probably never be able to afford one of these, but they are SOOOOO nice.
Red Witch... I'd easily settle for one of these instead of a Univibe. Made in NZ, beautiful polished crome casing, and some incredibly warm tremolo sounds. This is the pedal I want to get next...

I am a totally helpless guitar geek... but hey, that's me ;o)

Sorry to interrupt I 'll just put the bass in
Sadowsky outboard preamp. Hotrods your vintage plank without cutting into the thing.
Morley ProII Wah. no loss in bottom end, good sweep adjuster
Peavey Biamp chorus, a smidgin on fretless tracks
zoom506, good budget intro to the effects world, add exp pedal.
and to really stertch your thread flatwound strings for slow-mid tempo numbers. try the D'addario chromes, their $120 a set but they are super smooth.

Flatwound strings on a bass are so good ... on a Rickenbacker 4001/4003 they are simply superb. Different tone from roundwound strings ...seem a lot fuller. But the costs here are ridculous ...

I picked up a set of Dean Markley Flats for my boys ricky in Singapore ... cost me $30 Sing ... which is pretty much $30 NZ. I will be picking up some more on my next visit I think. Many people recommend the Thomastik-Infield Jazz Flats ... you can get them for USD35 a set from the link below ...

hi Big stu, thomas have funny gauges and I like the 105 E. Anyone tried flats on a steinberger?Or know where I can get them [double balls]?

Yeah ... the T-I strings are a little on the light side ... not for everyone I guess. A lot would depend on what type of music you generally play as well. For Steinbergers you could try La Bella ... these are what are fitted to them at the factory

http://www.labella.com ]

Labella's flats are the "St Jamerson" set. Looks like I'll have to call bill Wyman... anyone bassits tried EH qtron or Bass Balls?

All I use is the gain channels on my Trace Elliot Super Tramp Twin and a Jim Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Wah Pedal. I have a Peavy Delta Stomp effects unit, but can't find any reason to use it.

I guess I don't really do effects.

Well after having a little play at the rockshop today i am definatly going to pick up the aformentioned DOD Envelope filter, its a heck of a lot of pedal for $179 and has the exact Funk sound im trying to achive.

I dont care to much for Drive pedals - i belive most half decent amps will have a beter distortion than any bottom range effect pedal, i prefer to go for the Delay/Modulation effects and i love my little purple BF-2 Flanger, this Envelope filter is going to be a great brother for it.

Anyone have one that they want to sell????

Tar :-)

Just a word of unsolicited advice on delay pedals - if you can find one, get the Boss DD5, not the DD3 or the DD6. The DD3 is just the DD2 with an updated pricetag and the tap tempo functions on the DD6 are unusable live unless you're sitting down.

Can't you plug a momentary footswitch into that pedal to snchronise the repeats while you're standing? I'm sure I saw Trans Am do that last time they played at the Bodge... his delay repeats were totally in synch, it was awesome.

// dont care to much for Drive pedals

That's a shame dude- I mean there's just so many out there!

I remember watching a documentary on Metallica once where James Hetfield said the same thing, that amps have better distortion... well, that's his call, but it's an easy call to make when your rig is comprised of several Marshall stacks on meltdown. I agree in general, but it depends on your amp. Certain amps hate certain pedals- which is not always a bad thing, it just depends on where you're coming from with your music.

I have watched a band play live recently where one of the two guitarists was plugged directly into the board- as a result his normal guitar tone became this awesome, static-filled 60's style fuzz which was absolutely brilliant! Sometimes crappy sounds are the best sounds!

Re. the DD6 - you can't plug an external switch into it, that's the DD5. Bloody handy, that. What the DD6 does have is a built-in "tap tempo" system . . . Now, I know that some of their products in the past have tried this built-in thing, particularly the PH3 phaser and the RC20 Loop station, and they were diabolical to use. What I don't know is whether any improvements have been made.
The DD6 does look quite nice from a stereo-effects perspective but unless the tap tempo delivers, I'd advise the DD5 instead - and it'll still cost you about $100 less.

I had a look at a schematic of Dave Gilmour's rig once - he runs multiple signal chains into many various effect units and pedals, switching from chain to chain, and one of them was simply a Rat pedal and an EQ next to it to tweak the tone. Which meant that from time to time he was by-passing several hundred kilos of pre-amps and effects units to get a simple little stomp-box sound.

Go the Hotcake! you cant beat the great service that Mr Paul Crowther gives. made at his house with his wife. cool!
sounds great through accoustic as well.

I use:
Big Muff,
Moggy (Combination Fatcat/other thing - made by Doubtful sound,)
Bette (midrange booster from Doubtful Sound - it takes my slightly tinny Mustang sound and drives the mids for a beautiful tone from my Orange :))
DOD Wah/Volume pedal (the same as foetusboy's) - But I only use wah, and it has been hotrodded by B' of Doubtful sound.
And some analogue delay pedal.

So yeah - any new pedals I'm gonna get are Doubtful Sound ones. He can make brilliant pedals at reasonable prices. He can copy other pedals, and modify them at any stage. But he won't make you a hotcake or a prunes...

Wow cool, does he produce like unique pedals??? PLEASE give me an email address.

you can get me at b@wadda.org :)

btw eddie, it's a combination fatcat/vintage tubescreamer. it has the tubescreamer bits that drive the front end of valve amps nice, and the fatcat tone shaping cos its a bit thicker sounding than the ts.

i use ibanez tube screamer for those piercing lead breaks
for a more grunty tone I rely on my big muff
I have a lot of fun with my old zoom which used to hook onto my guitar strap.
Now it just rests on my amp (particularly favour sfx2)
and lately been using a standard line of boss; compressor, heavy metal, phaser, flanger, plus a carlsberg mono chorus pedal for that childrens birthday party sound.
i love my aria analogue dual echo pedal.
if i need a more pious sound i like to plug in through my casio dictaphone and out into the amp
when i'm trying to sound like sting I use my boss ME-6 (great stereo chorus and flange)
if i want to sound like a twiddly dick I like to use my hotcake through an old DOD chorus pedal
and lately i've been using the DOD grunge pedal..
2 months ago I put a jack in my landline with a headphone out from my mobile into the amp
once i made the call and compensated for the delay it gave my sound a real blunt tone.
i was trying to make my guitar sound unenthusiastic and it was reasonably successful
Lately I've also been experimenting with new picking techniques, I ditched my jim dunlop plectrum in favour of a small piece of cardboard but found that made my playing sound too slimy.
But yesterday i tried playing with a small dead bird my cat found in the garden and left on the mat outside the back door
I found this gave a really nice variation in tone
sometimes you hit the strings with the beak but most of the time it was just the feathers
and as I got further into the track I was recording, the bird lost a lot of feathers.
the sound was okay, its quite hard to describe
at the beginning it was sort of sharp like a dolphin call but by the end when the bird was bald, each strum was like a loud sneeze.
i've been using a slide a lot lately and damn it's great with those heavy strings
open g minor tuning and a little bit of hand cream (i've been using oil of ulan)
+ if you want that classic seventies rock sound a good technique i found was lathering my strumming hand in nail varnish and really flicking those strings.
this is better for long sessions cos once it dries it's a mission to get off
but not only do you get the sound
you get the look
and in music that's the most important thing

Jesus Christ. Get a band you bitter, bitter little man.

huh?

i get it tclak, you're an animal rights activist
sorry dude but the sound is great!!

next time us a rooster. then we can say that guy's playing with his cock.

yeah you could say that foal. you could say that to everyone and I'm sure you'd get many laughs. next time I'll consult you first before adding a post to make sure there is an appropriate pun you can use to make people laugh.

am i correct or are these not effects?
they affect the sound right?
is there something wrong with coming up with my own effects?
or are only allowed to discuss effects that someone has made profit off?

and for you foal: this morning i tried using a rooster the sound was very similar to the tone bryan adams had on 'waking up the neighbours'

I actually think your really funny. i personally wouldnt know anything about "bryan adams'. Sorry for any offence my attempted "humourous" post caused Christianity.

bryan used to be in a band called 'The Dudes Of Leisure', which if i'm not mistaken is a nod to Wellington band 'The Dukes Of Leisure'.

The Dukes!

he he he... ;-)

I used to run a MArshall JMP1 Preamp into a Stereo Peavey Classic 50/50 vavle power amp with a Boss SX700 for tap tempo delay and a Midiverb 3 for chorus, and use a Marshall tremelo pedal, Ernie ball volume, and Dunlop crybaby wah. I had 2 of those 2x12 which looked like a cabniet sawn vertically in half.

I loved that rig and used it for covers, sessions, and playing thru Asia (Hard Rock Cafe circuit).

Got stolen from my car in 2001 - bastards.

Now I run a MesaBoogie Nomad 45 with just a delay, using a USA Tele Deluxe.

I miss the big rig sometimes, but for most of the stuff I play now the Boogie is awesome.

I'd love to build another monster rack though - being able to switch sounds instantly is great for live (rather than oodles of stompboxes to tap dance your way thru)

i do the tap-dance, myself :P changing guitar pickup selector and turning mid boost and overdrive off and tremolo on is so much fun (not!) okay here's my shameless plug for my own products.

i use doubtful sound pedals:
* bette - mid booster
* boris - four stage distortion kinda like a big muff / G2D cross
* keith - angry sounding fuzz, think stones 'satisfaction' tone
* roger - phaser, like an MXR phase 90 but with matched FETs for more noticeable effect
* paddy - tremolo. one knob for speed, one switch for soft/hard (sine/square)
* colin - envelope filter. think bootsy. i have enough to do with my feet :P

pics here:
http://b.wadda.org/gallery/category/2003-10-19_gadgets

in the workshop, parts acquired and half-built but still in limbo, are:
* james - fuzz face clone
* suppa james - colorsound tonebender mk II clone
* jacob - analog delay
* bob - moog filter, will probably replace colin
* ring modulator. haven't thought of a name yet, suggestions? was thinking tom after tom baker, my fave doctor who.

i have a morley bass wah which i put a range selector switch in so you can use it as a guitar wah as well, but it's not true bypass so i don't use it. i might build bob into the morley case tho.

you can see my effects rig in action at WTF!? in welly on saturday night. proceeds to the FUCK THE BYPASS campaign, see you there :) PLUG PLUG PLUG hehehe

Cry Baby Wah Pedal.
Any kind of Phaser is cool with me.

not a huge fan of reverb.

I meant to say and any kind of phaser is cool with me.
