Country / folky rock

I have this idea that bands like Wilco and The Palace Brothers and whoever else must be referencing a bunch of acts, maybe from the 60s and 70s in what they do, but I don't know any history of that kind of stuff.

More generally, I'd be keen to hear any kind of recommendations for music that's cruisy "rock", sorta acoustic and slide guitars and so on, from the 60s and 70s. Anything that goes a bit psychedelic would be good.

I have a vague feeling if I dug into the Kinks beyond what I've heard on classic hits I might find something good?

Please ramble back at my ramble. ;)

Forums: The Bar,

gram parsons- the flatlanders- the byrds- around sweetheart of the rodeo (w/ parsons)- townes van z- guy clark- & more recently- robert earle keen jr- & of course the eagles

all quite easy to find- theres other stuff too- but my memory aint so good- & i cant move to get to my recods today

The Byrds definitely- 'Dolphin's Smile' has got some haunting space/psychadellica sounds, then you've got 'Goin' Back' which hints at the country rock thing... they got way into country sounds any later than that...

-The Notorious Byrd Brothers

The Band are quite nice - look into them, especially their first two albums, Music From The Big Pink and The Band (self-titled). They invented the term "roots-rock".

The Band - are you talkin about the group that sung "take the load out of on me"

Yeah, I was going to ask about The Band, actually... I used to listen to a lot of Robbie Robertson's solo stuff when I was at school. I suspect I'd hate that stuff now, but maybe I'd like the old Band tunes.

// "take the load out of on me"

I think you mean The Weight - as in "take a load off, Fanny"

the weight- i think its called l-s- for some reason i always found robbie the most annoying of the band- i loved ricks & richards & levons songs & musicianship way more- & garth was just- weird- i think its cos robbie rang 2 too many times late at night when i was in san fran- to invite me to a 'jam session'- i fuckin hate 'jam sessions'- plus i couldnt stand his nervy whitey guitar

//"take a load off, Fanny"

I've only heard Jimmy Barnes with some other band sing that song. Is it better or worse?

I like the original personally

(Oh so suprisingly for me) I like Pluto's cover of it.

"Take the load out on me" sounds like a line for a porn movie - "Oh yeah take your load out on me! Take it out all over my tits!"

Steady...

//I've only heard Jimmy Barnes with some other band sing that song [the weight]

that would be the badloves

BLASPHEMY

Yep, 'The Weight' by The Band.
Jimmy Barnes' versoin is utterly appalling. But anyone interested in folk rock should chek out The Band. Music frmo the Big Pink is great, as is the self-titled album, as is the Bob Dylan bootleggish Basement apes which he did with them when in recluse frmo the world in 67. Fucken great, you'll love it.

//"Oh yeah take your load out on me! Take it out all over my tits!"

LMAO

I never thought about it like that before.... whose to say they weren't writing for a porn soundtrack??

Southern rock is some pretty cool stuff. Although recently, I've been leaning toward Blue grass a little more than I would ever have expected, this chick kind of turned me onto some of it and at first I was like whatever it takes but I've since started to come around.

Jet - you may be surprised by this suggestion, but check out the Grateful Dead's two breakthrough acoustic albums from the v. early 70s - workingman's dead and american beauty. good stuff abounds. also - try new riders of the purple sage (jerry garcia on slide guitar), and eccentric english folk/pop like incredible string band. also - never forget uncle tupelo - the precursor to wilco and one of the key acts responsible for brining the whole gram parsons thing into the modern age. As for gram - try grevious angel and GP, he was also in an earlier band called the international submarine band - but they're almost pure rich east coast boys playing hillbilly music - fun though. and if you've a taste for contemporaries of wilco / palace / bonnie prince billy - check out nodepression.org

// try grevious angel and GP

Found both cheap on one CD last night. Haven't had a chance to give it a listen, but figured I'd just buy it and let it sink in.

i have the same CD - sinking in is good - a friend of mine says gram sounds a little cutesy - but i disagree. that's emmylou harris singing the b.vox - albums recorded at the time gram and emmylou were a smouldering item. - allmusic.com is a good start for links to the whole 60s cosmic american music - trails thru to wilco etc. noizyboy will tell you of connections between local nz acts and this whole palace/parsons thing - won't you noizy? (i couldn't possibly ...etc)

ah, actually, I'm a bit vague on Will Oldham's NZ connections. I do know that he's played with the Crooks (Maryrose and Brian, from the Renderers), and I think Denise Roughan from the 3Ds played bass guitar for him at least once when he was touring here, but I'm a bit hazy about the details. This is the sort of thing the guys down at Slowboat would swamp you with information about...

yes - and for a while anyway - denise was playing drums for the renderers too -sounded good - my god, everyone is a closet drummer ....

GP, the Band, Byrds, Buffalo Springfield

Gene Clark's solo shit is really good. He was an original member of the Byrds.

What no Molly Hatchet?
