Mikey Boy
ok it was bad enough we had to endure american idol
then our next door nieghbors followed suit
and now us...
what are your thoughts on NZ idol?
mine are like man really come on!!!
we already have a great creative nation and many artisits of great talent
i can see versions and covers of nature and split enz songs,
i dunno it makes me sad, the money spent on getting these events together
is crazy. imagine what we could do with our creative culture if the mass media machine spent all that money on emerging bands and artists or mabye if it spent the money on other sectors in society badly lacking funding
we watch to much reality tv anyway...
the sad thing is that many people with a true passion for music that crave such attention just end up singing cover songs and really bad cheesy crap
i swear if i hear that 'rise up' song one more time im gonna have to hurt somebody
man i hate that song !!! errggh
i dont think it will catch on as much as it did over seas
like what ever happened to true bliss... do you care?
all that money spent for crap entertainment with no soul
id love to see a live music show aimed at the 20 - 40 year old age group
with a bit more that crap covers songs
DOWN WITH NZ IDOL
its like the mcdonalds of music
cheap, not filling and full of rubbish
Quote:
In all seriousness, nz idol is a stupid idea. Why waste all that money on something that has been done before by other countries. If money is going to be invested into nz music it needs to go to our top artists who are not getting a lot of exposure and are unique to us. We dont need any more american influenced crap pop. Check this, Fat Freddy's Drop did well at this years b-nets (with warren maxwell winning best muscian and dj mu winning best producer) but if i asked a bunch of people on the streets of palmy if they ever heard a fat freddys song, most would not have a clue what i was on about. If i asked them if they new who brooke fraser or carly binding were they would most probably know. Now thats sad. i aint ever seen fat freddys on tv, heck i saw my first blackseeds video just a couple of hours ago and all i do is watch tv. nz idol is a waste of money, its true bliss all over again!!!!

On the contrary, whoever won the rights to produce and market this is going to make a lot of money. Also, a lot of raw talent is going to be uncovered, hopefully. It can't be a bad thing. Sure the type of music might not be your tastes, but if one damn good singer gets a chance that he/she otherwise would not ahve had then it's a success. It will encourage others to try and get into the scene, and they might be into making different music altogether. I guess you think its fine for NZ to take every other genre of music from the rest of the world but suddenly we can't have NZ Idol? (Ah, remember True Bliss? See, that gave some people semi-celebrity status and started a few careers)

there's a hell of a lot of talent in new zealand, and the more people we see on tv singing and whatever the better. hopefully it will kickstart a few careers as well...
and hopefully we can come up with better singers than the truly pitiful australian effort. ..
i say good luck to all involved, just don't expect me to buy your CD's at the end, but i'm sure someone will. ..

well said... i reckon those who are against this should have another think about it... its been a while since the whole popstars thing and since then a lot of new talented people have grown up, and in the process become eligible for such a "competition", i spose youd call it...not that i really intend to watch the series but i think thsi will be a good launching pad for a lot of preformers- and that yeah while a lot of the same people may show up, there will be a lot of new comers ready to strut their stuff...
another thing- just cos its an american (?) idea doesnt mean we're going to end up with the same americanised pop sounding NZ idol...surely part of becoming the idol is showing that you are unique and have something special thats going to get you somewhere?
good luck to the people going in to this eh...=)

Well so far it appears that most people are pro this NZ idol, all im really saying is that i really think that so much is put into these events and alot of other things that should be in the forefront in regards to creative showcasing really deserve alot more attention.
true. there are good singers out there that will benift from this kinda thing and many kids and people will enjoy it, but i cant help thinking that it seems like a glorifed karoke session at its best
do we have to really buy into it?
how many reality tv shows are on TV now?
20+??? and the way that the judges really put people through a really hard time
how many people completely give up on their dreams? how many people feel completely shattered by the views of a ego based commerical driven comment from a person in a postion of power to make or break
somebody... is this good? not really
i dunno perhaps we have just become to use to this kind of thing, i can see its pro's but i also see its cons,
we have put out amazing content from LOTR to the datsuns, rhombus, salmonella dub, fat freddys drop, scribe, p-money, the blackseeds why as a nation we need a washed down version of more american based reality shows beaming into our lifes is beyond me !
40% - 60% of NZ spends alot of time watching reality on TV
something is wrong with that picture
its time to turn it off and not buy into it, all we are doing is feeding a leech
a rich show producer slowly sucking off our creative dreams and turning into prime time
the 19 show producers that own the rights must be stoked that another country is doing it now
mabye they can buy that small island to holiday on...
rate payers paid 10,000 dollars to host the Australian idol finals
something like 100,000 dollars was spent on the fireworks display (mabye more that was huge)
production costs travel, promotion ect.. $500, 000 no problems
its massive amounts of money that would so help the amazing talent already here
oh well
reality is harsh , if only i could change the channel

I personally can't wait for it, and yea, there has been talk of it for months - there's a good 7 or 8 topics i think already, and many i've started myself. I think they're sick of it now though. :o) But everyone seems to humour me with it. :o)
Enjoy it for what it is. A local talent quest that is televised and has international connections for who ever wins. It's actually an english program. Pop Idol. That's where the format came from. I think it's great to see somethign that the universal community can do together. It's an amazing opportunity.

Mikey YOU ARE THE BEAST not only are all these brainless stupid Reality Shows all of what you have mentioned above but the contestants on these Shows are nothing more than Attention Starved Mediawhores whos daddys are obviously middle-high managers of a Major New Zealand/International Company, oh yes thats right daddy pulls strings to get there clean-cut goody two shoes preppy son/daughter on TV. and your ABSOLUTELY RIGHT about reality TV Shows being a waste of decent TV Space, Decent Shows such as The Simpsons, 8 Simple Rules, Malcolm in the Middle and My Wife and Kids are often sacrificed for this Pre-Packaged Cookie Cutter Trash and Dumbass Attetion Starved Camerahog Youths whos 15 minutes of fame ends at there Local Branch of WINZ 6 weeks down the track begging there case manager for a new Job.
Mikey Boy, i would like to give you some words - You Rock Dude and Keep up the good work and LONG LIVE THE REVOLUTION
ending my rant for advice - NZ Muso i dont want to sound like ad nauseam but again i STRONGLY advise you get your own recording time, agent and production team together rather than gambling away your hopes on Reality TV, I Know that you have a bright future ahead of you and you can acheive it without waging your future and hopes upon it.

Don't sign up kids. They don't care about your dreams. You'll be flavour of the month, then, not long afterwards, you'll be put in the back of the country's collective closet, along with cargo pants and chatter rings. Don't do it.

What about the young hopefuls who get an inspiring boost by one of the other judges who tells them that they're really talented, but not quite what they're looking for?
Fo' example, in Australian Idol there was a dude named Joel Turner who did some beat boxing for his audition piece. They told him he was good, but not what they were looking for. His auditition performance ended up being so popular that he was brought back to perform at the big concert at at grand final.
I suspect that most of the audition rejections don't end in tears or with crushed dreams. It's just that the ones that do end with drama are obviously more entertaining to watch than a person saying, "Oh, ok. Thanks anyway. Bye"

I would like to tell everyone not to worry......I am entering, but I will play and sing my own music. Yes, PLAY......so look out for a skinny white guy with an acoustic bass playing his OWN songs.....don't diss him because you like to blindly entertain yourself with putting down people. I can't get a single bastard in the music scene here to give me a break, I NEEd exposure, I have no money, I am $800 in debt to my BROTHER. I would just like to be able to do what defines the walls in my world without begging to get the money for a new string. I'm not going to argue shit for the next century on this, just respect that this is an alternative way to seek exposure in a blinkered scene. To everyone who bothers entering, enter as YOURSELF, don't hide behing someone else's music...if you sing 'iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii will always love you', or anything that even smells like Titanic, I will knock you down so hard, i swear!!

Have a little respect for your people and you might even have something to respect yourself for. NZ is talented, NZ Idol exposes all of the talent from good to 'its like this is the first time youve ever heard music in ur life - its that bad'.
To the good ones, go hard, make NZ Proud, show that we have the vocal capabilities to expand our horizons beyond the physical nature of NZ.
to the bad ones, dont take the comments personally, hey, everyones born with something theyre good at, right? And if all else fails, at least you rule at sucking.
