NEW YEARS EVE/DAY
I Know many of youz will be out getting smashed outta your heads, but for me its just another boring day in the life of Lucifer_sam, as if Jesus Christ, Buddha, Lord Krishna or Ginesha will appear before the earth, As if the "Three Days of Darkness" the bible has prophecised, will Occur, As if a MAJOR terrorist attack which will make 9/11 seem like a picnic in the park by the duckpond will happen.
My Point, what is the point of celebrating the beginning of a certain day of the year when i can get drunk, stoned or score chicks on any given day of the year, sweet jesus it could be April 4, February 26, October 9 or December 11 of any given year i can do all this stuff, why does society have to conform to a certain date when they know nothing bloody imajourly serious will happen.
in case you all care ill be asleep completely sober and stra8 by 9.40pm on December 31 knowing that another boring day in the life is ahead the next morning.

Well the point is, that its just the start of a new year where you can mark a date thats common to start your resolutions or comeback throws. Where you can start deciding what you really wanna do in the new year. Being happy cos you made it to the next year & you didn't die in the previous year. Knowing that you lived & you are okay so now you make new decisions if not stay comfortable in the one you are living through & be grateful that you can actually be there to enjoy a year witha different digit at the end & be able to continue to enjoy the benefits of living such as scoring chics as you say.
Of course you can do that, that shits legit to the days..just being able to be in new year, its quite fun if you think of it that way..BEING HERE.

I had a few friends who sadly did not make it to this point and it makes me realise life is too short to hold grudges and be angry at people. I do not think many people think along these lines however. Time-such as it is-is precious and I intend to make 2004 the best year of my life thus far.

Well, the whole idea of celebrating new years may not be particularly symbolic any more.
However, the whole idea of having a party is having lots of people getting together and having fun - in general, the more people you get the better. ...And you have to put aside a particular day, regardless of the date, just so that everyone knows when to turn up. That's pretty logical.
So...Putting aside January 1st every year is just a good way of organising one big global party and making sure everyone comes.
Furthermore LuluSam, if you're so arsy about Jan 1st, why did you make a christmas list in Blindspott#1's topic? If you're so against celebrating on particular days, what makes christmas so different? Surely you don't celebrate the birth of Christ? Winter Solstice perhaps?

That is not stopping anyone who wishes to go party and get buzzed and whatever else they want to do. They will always find a reason to do that any day of the week.

Perhaps 'pertinent' is a better word then. What I mean is with the secularisation of society, the superstitious aspects of more ancient traditions are taking a back seat. Do you think new years is as significant as thanksgiving? Or independence day?

What a load of unmitigated bullshit! Society does not dictate specific days when you "can get with opposing genders." At least not the society I live in ...
As for following the stars it seems to me you are swapping one unsubstantiated superstition for another. How the random juxtaposition of various masses of burning gas can determine whether you get lucky or not is beyond my comprehension.
But you are right about things I guess ... people shouldn't need a specific day to celebrate life. In fact everyday you wake up is worth celebrating. On the other hand, there are some days that are more significant in various cultures than others. And the start of a new year with its promise of great things to come is surely as significant as any other special day. A perfect opportunity to reflect on the days gone by and to ponder what might lie ahead. And hell ... why not idulge in a little wanton hedonism at the same time ...
