Um, just because someone posts to NZmusic.com a lot, doesn't mean that person has what it takes to be a pop idol. In fact, I reckon that a typical successful NZ Idol contestant would probably be too busy with singing and music to be hanging out on NZmusic all the time.
Yes, a lot of NZmusic regulars are actively involved with performing music, but many others just like listening to and writing about it.
// cmon guys, show some kiwi spirit and show all the idols of the world, i.e americans & the faggoty ass aussies, what kiwis r made of...
That's got to be the lamest reasons for entering NZ Idol I've seen. It doesn't matter if you're gay or straight. Will Young, who won UK Pop Idol, is openly gay, and Courtney Act, one of the more entertaining entrants on Australian Idol, is also openly gay. I'd be just as happy with a gay person winning NZ Idol than I would of a straight person.

That sounds about right.
However, I justed watched the Australian Idol final on video last night and noticed that when Shannon was singing one song, he was pronouncing words the Australian way, not the American way. It stood out - that's why I noticed it. A big part of the Idol concept seems to be picking a singer that will represent their country as a pop singer, so it makes sense that they would be doing things with a local flavour. Hopefully NZ Idol will encourage contestants to sing with a unique NZ style.

Some of my mates are entering, I'm not planning on it at the moment although they're telling me too. Problem with me is I get really nervous at auditions and my voice chokes up, but once I'm through I'm fine, weird eh? although I think (haven't done an audtion for half a year) that the last couple went ok, - ended up with a main role, so maybe I would be ok. Any1 know when applications have to be in by? oh and I have a good feeling my best mate jessie will do alright, she came 3rd in last yrs Rockquest for any1 who may have seen her.

Tell me about it! I soooo know so many people who are going for it. A few of my colleagues/friends asked me as well but Hell No..Im a lyricist not a singer although I can sing/harmonise if need be. I have 2 friends, no of another whos connected to a friend, know of some work guys from a family member, some people I've spoken to just recently met, some old as school friends..all these people. The competition is intense. I wouldn't be able to handle it - the pressure. Even one of our hang out crew members were like..'Shall we go for fun?'...just to get on t.v...Easier said than done.
Well, best of faith to all contestants, this is a hard one..We are bound to kick Australians ass but I dont think we'll beat American Idols Reubon & Clay..even though Clays the real winner in real life.
Hang on though lets see how it goes cos i for sure know so many singers out there. Being the millineum, we have climbed the ladder into the next stage, this is the generation that has scooped up influential talent & hence will deliver us the best of what we have acquired as a nation. Im proud of anyone that goes for it, I commend you & I wish you the best of faith cos I dont believe in luck..
May the best NZ IDOL win..I hope its someone who so so so deserves to win like Guy in Australia. He's such a wonderful person. Definitely needs to be someone deserving as well as with a sweet maybe angelic voice. Go Idols..

Oh Luci. Your Idol application form ...
Oh Luci. Your Idol application form parody was ok, but parody is funny when it's based on real life, not some sort of masturbatory fantasy.
Do you really think that the CEO of Fonterra or Telecom would only make $100,000 per annun? I know that's a lot of money for you, but in the real world such a position would be much more than that.
And why would a rich girl be shopping at pissy cheap-arse chain stores like Glassons, Jay Jays or Hannahs? I suppose they might seen extravagant compared to, say K Mart or The Warehouse (or your local Salvation Army Store), but for a rich girl with money to spend, they would rarely feature on her shopping trips.
Have you even seen an Idol show? Because if you had, you'd know that pretty blonde girls who don't have great voices don't get very far. If they do manage to squeak into the top 40 or even the top 10, the judges will tell them when they suck, probably make them cry, and they're usually among the first to get eliminated or voted off.
Oh, and Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Nsync are anything but pre-packaged cookie cutter crap. They are pop artists at the top of their game. They are the ones that other pop artists try to emulate. It is their success that fuels the cookie cutter clones - the ones whose names you don't know because you don't listen to crap pop.
Ok, I know you get a lot of pleasure from this fantasy of rich girl Idol contestants, but I think you need to know that it is just a fantasy. It doesn't happen in real life.
Hate to say it Luci, but christina ...
Hate to say it Luci, but christina agulera is great. She started off as pop and didn't have much to say in what she did. But this last album was all hers, and unless you've listened to the whole album and what it says, it's not liek her stuff they promote. It's very moving, and very much what someone my age goes through in different ways. It's quite insightful into her. Plus if you've ever heard her sing - i idolise her for her vocal clarity, range, and the control she has over her voice is just like talking. For that she has my respect. :o)
And thanks for the BTW. :o)

Hey Luci.
My talent is my voice. Christina aguleara's talent is her voice. Same with everyone who is on nz idol. That's the instrument that they work with teh most. I'm learning guitar, and i've played piano since i was 7 - though i suck at that too cos i've hardly laid a finger on a keyboard in about 5 years - but my main instrument is my voice. If you've ever heard christina accapella, she is truely amazing. You may not like her songs or her image, but do try to listen if you get the chance to her softer stuff on her second album, and listen just to her voice. It's truely envyable.... :o)

Because, Lucy, in order for you to 'expose' them as corporate puppets, I need to be convinced of your argument. And perhaps that requires some factual evidence, other than pure opinions. As far as I can see, your website is just opinionated garbage, slagging off musicians (yes, musicians) whose music you personally don't like.

tclak - i havent had a g/f in 4 years thats why.
NZ_MUSO i suppose the voice is an instrument, but alot of pop "artists" have there voices digitally alternated by voice enhancers to make them sound either like - some bitch/pansy boy having a dildo shoved up his rectum (pardon the profanity) or like a robot (seriously like a robot) in need of ritalin or Prozac, But overall the Natural Voice is certainly a vital instrument. I just disagree with crappy computer generated programmed shit that makes music so un-natural - oh and the way certain popstars (who will remain nameless as you probably have guessed them by now) are demoralising society and lowering the musical standards of the modern era.

nz idol. within about 48 hours of the applications being available, id received a few emails from people saying "give it a go!" and a couple of workmates had dropped copies on my desk at work... so i read the application. i just scrape into the age limit... 27 and wrinkling fast. and i mainly just grinned at it til i hit the privacy waiver. i deal with the privacy act more or less constanly at work, and this contract waives pretty much every single right you have with regards to personal privacy. not only does it entitle the show to use and exploit every detail and facet of your private life and your participation in the show, but it reserves the right to control and sell the same to any other agency. what does this mean? that even if youre not chosen as a contestant, they can make money by selling pictures of you or details about you to random magazines or papers, whatever, and you dont get a cent.
this is called complete manipulation. the worst thing is that genuinely talented peopl will see this as an opportunity to get a foot in the door, and while most will merely be inculted as cruelly as possible, in as public a forum as possible, one poor sod will sweat blood for 15 minutes of fame singing other peoples covers before theyre discarded by a cynical public with a fast food attention span.

Man, do you have issues?
No offence BJ, but it's actually marketing. And hard marketing. You do that when you put a CV together. The TV companies might make money out of it, but remember who ever wins gets a contract. And i tell you one thing - i'm aiming for the final 10. If nothing else - you can get contacts. It's all about working the environment. Probably why they have made entry forms this time, to make sure that everyone entering really wants to be there, it's not just a whim. I know what i want, and i can use this as a vehicle to get me there.
Stop being so cynical, and step out of your comfort zone. I love to sing, but even this is out of my comfort zone. Stop making excuses, pick a song you sing well, and go for it. Sounds to me like you're just afraid to try.
No offence intended, but think about it. You obviously have the talent, or your friends wouldn't be pressuring you to do it. If nothing else, it will be something fun to tell your kids. How can you encourage your kids to do well and try things if you don't. (not htat i'm saying you have kids now, but in the future perhaps.)
I don't think bj's scared to try out ...
I don't think bj's scared to try out - just put off at the prospect of being merchandise, regardless of how well or badly she did...
//even if youre not chosen as a contestant, they can make money by selling pictures of you or details about you to random magazines or papers, whatever, and you dont get a cent.
//You do that when you put a CV together.
Difference between this and a CV is that you have complete control over what goes in your CV. I think the clause that bj's quoted highlights the problem with trying to use this competition as a stepping stone to a career in the music industry; the winner will have absolutely no control over - well, anything. They just become a puppet of the NZ Idol bosses. Someone with the ambition may eventually make a name for themselves independently, but it'll take years to break out of that whole industry infrastructure.
Take Carly Binding for instance - I get the impression she basically had to start from scratch, and the exposure she got through Popstars still works against her as much as it's helped her. I reckon the only way in which it may have helped is that it took her less time than average to release her debut album (about 4 1/2 years from the start of the popstars process, I think?).
Not intending to put you off or anything, nz muso, obviously the whole pop idol thing would be an amazing experience, but just it's not really a magical starlit opportunity to make it big; particularly in NZ where the overwhelming majority of music fans are into hip hop, garage rock or indie bands. The whole Pop Idol format - teens and twenty-somethings singing other peoples' classic hits - will be really popular for as long as the competition lasts, but I doubt it'll sell many records. If the winner doesn't do well immediately after the competition, then it'll be even more difficult for them to convince the record label to back their own stuff.
I do see where she's coming from, but ...
I do see where she's coming from, but i also see so many people who go for auditions who have no idea what they want out of it. It's give and take. You give them your time and name and stuff, and if you play your cards right, you get contacts and perhaps the opportunity to record. Plus as an international forum (ie: idol international that pits all the no 1 contestants against each other) you get larger exposure.
Some go in with high hopes of winning, and are gutted when they don't get it and cry on camera. I think i'd cry if i actually got in! :o) You need to know what you want out of it, or you're just there for the ride. So many people put them down, but you watch people all the time giong to local rugby games and stuff to support their team, and then when that person makes it big, you go and watch them. I havn't heard of many rubgy players who are put down for trying out for the all blacks. Admittedly, it's not televised, but it's all about target audience.
I wasn't meaning to put her down personally, but so many people are so like minded, and it's frustrating. I hate tall poppy syndrome cos i've had to deal with it all my life. I'm not exactly on a crusade to fight it as a one woman band, but i do like to point out the flip side of all of these things. Many people say things cos they are scared in themselves, and it's frustrating cos then they come up with all sorts of stuff that isn't productive to those who want to go in it. There are always downsides, but so many people are SO far against it, they can hardly see the sun for the clouds.
I'm proud of most of what i do, and i admit when i havn't done my best. But i'm not going to shy away from trying.
Basically with the CV thing i meant that you're selling yourself. Through interview processes and getting your name and CV out there. Your employers are the company or the board of that company. In this instance, your employers are basically New Zealand. They decide if you are to be employed. The company reserves the right to use your auditions and bits and peices basically because they know what's best for you and the programme. You are in control in essence by entering. You choose how you act, and you have decided before giong on the programme that you have the confidence to enter. So it is your choice. And if you know what you want, and are good with people, you can get almost anything you want. Especially if it's in line with what they want.
