Ever Heard of a Guy Named Ryan Adams?

If you have heard of this young and upcoming rock and roller he is my cousin. No kidding. But I am not sure if he is known in New Zealand or not. But he is getting to be huge with his music. Used to lead the now defunct band Whiskeytown. He is good too.

Forums: The Bar,

set me up!

I am very very saddened to say we have not spoken in years as he moved to Raleigh(NC) about a year before he formed his first band. I have not seen him since but he does call his mother(My aunt Susan) on occasions. If I had his ear I would have gotten his assistance for my own band but mine fell apart.

bull shit

Is that a cry of delight kind sir?

No, I just think that you are spinning a yarn; most people who visit this website aren't that stupid/ignorant that they don't know who Ryan Adams is. He sings summer of 69 doesn't him?

No that's my cousin Bryan. We haven't spoken since he had an affair with Princess Diana.

why did ryan adams change his name to that? and why does he get so offended when people yell out requests of bryan adams songs at his concert, that they get kicked out? surely he must've known that was going to happen when he changed his name to that.

Also how do we know that you aren't spinning us a big yarn, i mean i could say that i'm chris martins cousin. i mean i've got no reason not to belive you but i've got no reason to believe you either.

Ryan Adams IS his real name. He did not change it when he took over the band Whiskeytown. It is his birth name.

You are getting him mixed up with Bryan Adams. I ain't related to Bryan Adams. I am related to Ryan Adams. Trust me Ryan was no where near the music world when Bryan Adams wrote Symmer of '69. I will asume you have never heard of my cousin Ryan and let the matter drop.

bro i know who ryan adams is i was just taking the piss. Ryan Adams has bought out about three or four albums: heartbreaker, gold, one other one i can't remember and his new album rock and roll. what i was wanting to know, and since you "know" him you should be able to help me, i heard on the radio the other day that ryan adams isn't his birth name. what i want to know is why he would change his name to ryan adams when you know that people are going to confuse it with bryan adams

OK let me help you out man. I ain't mad or anything. But his birth name is David Ryan Adams. He is the youngest son of my father's brother. He calls himself Ryan Adams and always has as far as I know. Like I think I said I have not seen him in since he made it big with Whiskeytown and now his solo career. I should also point out he can be stubborn which is a family trait.

yeah i have heard of him.is he the guy who sings "for nancy"?

no thats Pete Yorn.

I heard that Ryan Adams and Bryan Adams had the same birthdate too. random eh

Why did you post this if you're not still talking to him? Doesn't that make your connection to him kinda irrelevant and even if you do have a connection to him, so? Is it kind of like if I posted going "Hey everyone, I wear a C cup" ?

I wanted to know whether he was known in New Zealand or not.

no it's more like posting 'hey I'm Ryan Adams's estranged cousin" which is definitely more interesting...

his antics of throwing people out of concerts are... with things like that he gets known everywhere... thats what rumours and gossip is for...spreading info...
never actually heard his music though... or maybe i have and i just cant remember... though.. no i doubt it...

I am sorry to say that is true. Apparently he did throw some heckler out but refunded the money after the fact. Like I said stubborness is a family trait we share.

*you* are stubborn?
that was funny when it filtered through though... though i can sort of see his side to things- like if you're trying to form your own identity in the industry, you certainly dont want to be known as/seen as etc etc someone else...

I can be stubborn but most of the time I am easygoing.

mmm you sound it... thats why the stubborn part is a bit of a surprise...

Yeah can't really help it. It's in my genes.

hehehe... yeah i use that one too! not for stubborness... i dont think im that stubborn... but for everything else- like getting really really moody- mum, waking up early and not being able to sleep in- dad... goes on and on forever...

//Give it up for all the B-Cup woman in the world.

Waa Hey!

Yeah? Well I usually am easygoing like I am right now. And I try my best to be considerate of toihers. Especially ones I like a lot. But I do try to be fair.

//"Hey everyone, I wear a C cup" ?

All you ever need is a B-Cup. Give it up for all the B-Cup woman in the world.

I have no idea whether you are related to Ryan Adams or not. I hope you are because then perhaps you can convince him through Aunty Susan or your Dad's brother or whoever to get his arse to New Zealand to play a show. Ryan Adams is incredibly talented and I'm a big fan...

So if he's your Dad's brother's son, does that mean your surname is Adams too? Is your Dad American? Are you American?

Oh, and speaking of Aunty Susan and Uncle Whatshisname, do you know what they did for jobs while Ryan was growing up? I'm curious to know what his childhood involved to lead to the themes in his music...

Cheers

Thank you for your questions Jane. My uncle is a carpenter and my aunt is a school teacher. But they are divroced. Ryan went through some bad experiences growing up and that may have led him into music as a form of self expression. He moved to Raliegh in the mid-1990s and met up with some local musicians and formed his first band. That led to him to taking the reigns of Whiskeytown before going solo. Music is an important thing in our family and his father played in a band in high school and I too have flirted with music before. Hope this helps shed some light for you. And yes we are both americans.

hey thete, you seem like a genuinely good poster on the forums so far so I'm on the fence.

We all know ryan adams - we're here on a music site dedicated to bands, none of whom are as big as ryan on the gloabl stage.

I'd imagine you have this trouble on other sites if you really are related: how can you prove it?

P.S don't look through old posts on the site ffor ryan adams comments. a few members were cutting when Gold first came out. :)

OK Thete, either you've done your research or you are in fact related to Ryan Adams. I remember reading that his mother was a teacher and his father a builder, so you're spot on. Not that I was testing you or anything...

I was introduced to Ryan Adams' music through a friend of mine, and fell in love with it instantly. Next time you see him, say hi from me!

Yes Jane I am his cousin. We share the same surnname(Adams) and we both grew up here in Jacksonville North Carolina. He dropped out of high school and moved to Raleigh. He washed dishes at restaurants and met up with some guys and that is when he got started as a musician. I have not seen him in some years as his parents divorced and he was raised by his mother and we seldom visited our grandmother at the same time during the holidays. He seldom comes home to visit but usually stays in touch with his mother who is my aunt Susan. Thank you Jane for giving me the benefit of the doubt about our relation.

No diesrespect but I am not discussing him anymore. We are related by blood and that is the truth. It is sad that we live in a day where people automatically think someone is lying if he says he is related to a celebrity. So this is my last post on this subject which I am sorry I ever brought up.

no offence but thats an odd response.

surely you can understand my apprehension on an 'anonymous' forum? and i was just about to play some ryan adams on my playlist too. bummed out.

dust- trust him when he says he is his cousin... or at least trust me...

my comment stands.

p.s. do you like his music?

who?me or thete?

Actually it is not a weird response Dust. I do not have to prove we are cousins to you or anyone else. I only started this discussion to see if he was known by name in New Zealand. I actually do not like much of what I have heard him sing. I liked the Strangers Almanac album best. And to answer a question posed by another poster-yes my last name is Adams. Our fathers are brothers.

hang on, is this going a bit pear-shaped?

I didn't mean to sound demanding, if thats what has upset you. I couldn't think of how you could 'prove' it. But I did think maybe you'd solved this in the past perhaps and could use a similar tack here. Can I ask if this is the first forum/website you've mentioned the connection on?

Admittedly the word "proof" sounds aggressive, but I couldn't thinnk of another term. My apologies if it read that way to you.

The propsect of discussing Ryan Adams with you was quite exciting, even if it was only some simple observations. But wouldn't it be frustrating if it was someone misleading us all? I know I'd feel foolish.

You absolutely right, you don't need to prove shit to me or anyone. Totally agree, but then I guess that makes this discussion over (as you've also said). I'd like to be able to trust you (and Libelle) but its next to impossible to trust people on the Internet, not to mention bad for you. Trust me ... :)

Behind the scenes at NZM there has been some fervent Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown fans from time to time.

So... assuming I've upset you... how can I make it up to you? :)

Moving on...

I haven't checked out Ryan Adams since Gold. Is there a new release? How's it working for those that dug the last release?

I think there's two, but am not too sure. I picked up 'Demolition', which definitely came out since 'Gold'. The story goes (if I remember correctly) that he did a bunch of demos and then decided to just release them, rather than go and do the "proper" recordings. So it's no overdubs, generally one take kind of business.

I like about half the songs (my usual hit rate with Ryan Adams) but I actually reckon the demo approach does detract. It's not like PJ Harvey's '4 track demos' or something - ie. endearingly grubby and raw - just sorta lackluster sounding.

Thx Jet, Any songs in particluar you rate?

That's right, Demolition was released after Gold, but as Jet says, it's a collection of demos rather than a flash studio set up. The new album Rock 'n Roll is pretty good - not as melancholy as Gold, and it steps a little further out of the realms of country. I like it, particularly the first track, but it's still new to me so I've yet to allow the whole thing to sink in properly. He's also just released the Love is Hell Sessions Part One, and in December he will be releasing Part Two.

On another note, any fans of the Jayhawks here? Rainy Day music is one of my favourite albums at the moment, it's fantastic. Your thoughts?

Rock n roll is ryan adams' "official" release after Gold. He recorded Love Is Hell but his label Lost Highway deemed it too dark so he was sent back to the studio and came up with rock n roll (in the time of three weeks, I think) i find that strange because I enjoy ryan adams’ “dark” stuff a lot. And I don’t think I’m the only one.
Anyway, Love Is Hell got split into two EPs … part 1 is out now and part 2 comes out sometime in December (cant wait!)
Personally I like the Love Is Hell stuff better than Rock n Roll – but the album is a nice change, instead of him releasing another alt-country album. He’s touring the UK and soon US and I’ve been reading mixed reviews. I too long for the day he comes down to New Zealand… !

This is what I was hoping would happen. I am very proud to say that we are now getting down to the heart of the matter by discussing his music. Has anyone here got the Strangers Almanac album? He and Caitlin worked really well together. It is a shame the band broke up but my cousin is more confortable being a londer than leading a highly successful band. What do you guys think of his association with Sir Elton John?

I introduced myself to Ryan Adams by buying Gold (I still don’t know anyone who is into him that I haven’t told them about first… so I’m glad I stumbled across this forum). I then bought Heartbreaker, then Demolition, etc… but have never really got into Whiskeytown. Perhaps I should? I've been thinking about getting Pneumonia.

//What do you guys think of his association with Sir Elton John?
I think the cmt crossroads show they did together was brilliant. Apart from that I haven’t really thought about the association.

Ryan Adams is choice. Like the ove Is Hell Pt 1 better than Rock N Roll... but I haven't listened to either one extensively, though. Heartbreaker is my favourite Ryan Adams album so far.

The Jayhawks on the other hand are one of my favourites too, Jane Y. I listen to Rainy Day Music incessantly. It is just a brilliant album... I sing along and feel happy. I like it as much as I like Calexico - Feast Of Wire. Yay Ryan Adams for signing them :)

Recommend: Britta Phillips and Dean Wareham - L'Avventura; Josh Freese.

Calexico are playing NZ in a couple of weeks, sweet!

Rainy Day Music has been my constant companion while I renovate my hallway. I think I've learned most of the lyrics by osmosis.
