MOST UNDERRATED NZ BANDS

Who are the bands that have now broken up (R.I.P) but have been criminally underrated by the music loving community?

Forums: NZ Music,

Off the top of my head...

Malchicks
Fanta Baby
Parka

I dont like posting new comments so I continue on this thread. Where are those chicks that opened for Bone..Moizna? Well i dont know if they've broken up but they aren't around anymore. Big ups to them anyway, they should come back out & start kicking some butt along their mainstream of music.

Fanta Baby? Infidelity was a piece of shit.

the sucked
the dead

Kamahi
Uncle Dad

Here here

Polaar.

word.

Superette. Although I dunno if they were underated or not.

i reckon they were

Mescalin

weta, i guess they were appreciated here, but shame they never got out of nz/oz.

you are so right! weta had the "x factor" that so many new zealand bands don't have...wish i'd seen them live.

much better on cd than live I felt, but i only saw them twice.

the weta album was over cooked and over rated...in my humble opinion....some good tunes, good live band, but lacking a certain creative drive (that i would say letterbox lambs had in abundance

as much as I love weta, i'd have to say that's the closest description to what i feel. The wildside version of got the ju is better, and Natural Compression is a great buy still.

crippled mr onion
savant

this person is destined for big things

hahaha

Hey to the guy above- those bands havent broken up! Long live Cripple Mr Onion!

Anyway, my picks are Ska Trek and Royal Rumble.

Yes- im a ska fan...

Ape Management
Kitset

Kitset ruled.

Kitset died way too soon. What an incredible debut album.

Weren't you IN Ape Management, Dragstrip?

Yeah, which makes me acutely aware of how under-rated they/we were.

Slim....

Hmmm... do you think perhaps that the musicians themselves undderate themselves, hence break-up,
or disband for want of a better word. I guess some do, but then I guess it boils down to the relationships within the band members themselves; ie can we still get along outside of the music? Do I really like the way you play that guitar lead? You get too pissed before a gig, You never turn up for band practise?? You fucked my girlfriend!!!!!......?????

Anyone else share these similar ideals?????

yes to all of the above in various forms

As a general rule musicians tend to OVERrate themselves, whilst totally discrediting all others. Otherwise you seem to have all the bases covered

mestar
cloudboy
mink
!!!!!

Mestar are having a break while John is overseas.
Cloudboy are touring Europe (www.cloudboy.net.nz)
Definitely Mink. They ruled.

Yeah, Mink.

I'd also say 'In my craft or sullen art' is just so fantastic that it makes me hate the universe for not knowing about it. :p

yeah i missed the broken up bit :)

mink oh mink, you know they released the first multimedia CD bought out by a NZ band? they beat Eye TV by a couple years on that one i think - for my mink

Anyone know if there's an mp3 of Mink's "Ride" floating around somewhere?

Mestar are awesome...Porcupine was such a bloody good album.....shamefully underpromoted

I'm still waiting, folks.

The Panties

Drinkwater - no! wait...

Greenwood Holmes Retirement Village

Though I made a decision to leave, eveything else went in hand too....
some bitterness for a short time, unspoken words to friends..we're still friends

What with Peter Panties having the heart to eat twinkies in San Fran...then moving back...

As much chaos I created I still had brilliant times, those memories will never disappear.

what are you referring to?

* Range
* Sola Monday
* Laughin' Gas
* Poultice

and both of my bands.

although, technically, we're in hiatus, and not broken up. not sure about sola monday and laughin' gas.

Yeah, Cinematic seemed like a great thing when I was at uni.

cheers mate. we've actually got an unreleased album lurking around in a tin can somewhere, and Jeremy Taylor has recorded a new album over the last couple of years with myself, Andy from Cinematic, and various other musos from around NZ that he's going to release under his own name in the new year, so, there's more of those angst-ridden sounds heading out onto the airwaves (and perhaps a stage, if we can find a practise room) soon.

La Gloria

Wellington noise dudes... saw them at old Bodega once... brought their experiemental CD... never heard from them again. Did one of them move on to The Accelerants?

Yeah, one of the guitarists did, if I'm remembering correctly and The Accelerants is the band fronted by Marty Squire ex-D-Super.

Thinking of noise acts, Surface of the Earth did some great stuff. Maybe they're still around, but seem to be the most .. intermittent? .. band around.

La Gloria is still, most definately , a going concern.

speaking of noise...Birchville Cat Motel at happy during the bomb the space fest was one of the most entranceing musical experiences of my life....mesmerising,
