Help me fill in my application form please!

Ok, help me answer these questions please. No idea why, but you have to fill in an entry form for NZ idol, and then they deem from that if they actually want to audition you. Sounds a little different to the other idol comps. Not open - guess they just don't want random people auditioning, only the serious ones. So help me answer these questions please!????

1. How well can you sing? (Was thinking of putting in range and style, any other logical answers?)
2. Why should we pick you? (Cause i wouldn't damn well be applying if i didn't want to get there...)
3. What is my proudest achievement to date? (Musically or personally? And does making it through singing an entire song at your best friends funeral count?)
4. Describe yourself in 10 words. (Anyone got any opinions on me? - yea, yea, open forum on tracy day......)

Forums: The Bar,

Ok, I've had a bit experience at these things of late, so...
//1. How well can you sing?
Speak about your singing strengths, favourite styles, experience, have you been trained?, in a band?, anything that makes you look good and hopefully stand out against all the other people

//2. Why should we pick you?
Because, you love music, you think the experience would be fantastic, great learning opportunity for you - and you are open to learning, you think music is something you will never tire of, and you are an aspiring musician looking for a break in this rather tough and small market.

//3. What is my proudest achievement to date
Don't see why it sould have to be musical, though it helps if you could fit it in. I think singing at your friends funeral would be good - both musical and personal, it shows something about you.

//4. Describe yourself in 10 words.
Sorry, don't know you that well - 'open' is always good, something about being funny, honest, hardworking, friendly etc.

Hey you! Say everything that New Zealanders want to hear..not exactly but kinda like what an idol should be. My 2 friends are going for this as well & one of them are thinking the same way as you are. Be positive, dare to be eccentric, get to the point. When describing yourself in a few words, say all the things that you are..Daring, Optimistic, Flamboyant, Carefree Spirited, Deep, Soul Expressive..basically anything that you feel who you are.
They want to hear stuff like how well you think of yourself. How confident you are in your own abilities & whether your ready for the stringent process..They're seeking an idol not some scum who can just sing with a ph*ked up attitude/personality if you get how Im thinking..
From my perception, its all about sifting for a true well deserved idol & to think that you can just sing wont get you anywhere unless you have a heart and/or a sound mind that goes with it.
Be challenging in what you say, say what you need to say, cut to the chase & declare yourself as a very highly potential Idol...Congradulations on your decision to go ahead & make it..All the best I hope to see you on the box early next year...
Much Thuggish Ruggish to you & to any other potential contestants..
L.C.A...I'd love to be the next Idol..How badly do you want it???

////3. What is my proudest achievement to date

Just make sure you show, don't tell them, what this shows about you. I mean don't say anything about how you loved performing a certain song or everyone said you were really good, focus on things like how you felt honoured to do the performance because your mate was very special to you and a lot of other people.

I performed for him. I didn't want to at first, cos i didn't want to take the attention away from it being his day and his family's day, but his mum and dad are always on at me about how many people commented afterwards about my singing, and how proud they are of me and just how much they loved it. I think i could have sounded like crap and they would have loved it. :o) I think "honoured" is a great word for it. Thanks. :o)

Good Luck!!! (almost forgot)

hey Penny!

Thanks heaps for your advice. It's very similar to some of hte stuff i had thought of, but gave me a lot more food for thought. :o) It's awesome to see so many people who want to help. And it's all constructive this time! :o) Always a bonus.

Any idea who any of the judges are? I heard they were looking at bic runga and the guy from pacifier - but personally i think bic should be concentrating on her career right now, and i'd probably say the same for ... is it jon toogood?

I *think* one of the Channel Z presenters is a judge. Could be wrong - could be a different radio station...wasn't paying much attention when it was mentioned.

I reckon Anika Moa would make a great judge - she's really blunt.

How about Duncan Greive?

i heard peter urlich was going to be one of the judges...heh heh heh.

Jason Gunn is the host.

Yes it sounds very exciting. Goold luck from me as well!

Treat it like a job interview - don't put in any negatives
Try and keep all your answers based around music cos that's what they're interested in.

although im staunchly against these type of shows, i want to wish u NZ_Muso all the best or in my case the BEAST, in your application.

Thankyou sam. :o)

Can i add my WITTY comments to your questions? I wanted ur consent or else Heather might go spastic on me again.

No. Constructive and useful. I set this topic up for real feedback, not crap. Unless you think it may help me in the slightest, keep it to yourself and for another topic. :o)

aaawww *sadly takes his fingers off the keyboard*

but i again advice you to STRONGLY consider booking your own studio time and all this and that rather than going up against rich and snobby trendy attention-hog 20-somethings, I Know you will be successful somehow. But even if you dont make it into the show, you can always follow my advice...and its the best i can give you.

....can u handle constructive criticism there nz muso??

I take in the constructive bits, and the rest really is water off a ducks back, but i do see your point. have i also mentioned that i got into Uni? THeir music course? They loved my song. :o) So i'm over the moon. :o)

maybe i should become a syndicated advice coloumist in a major magazine or something.....i know this is off topic but do check out DEAR DOTTI at WEEKELY WORLD NEWS, rather than dispensing advice, she dispenses insults, its friggen hilarious. heres the URL and look for the 'DEAR DOTTI' on the main page

//have i also mentioned that i got into Uni?
Congrats, which uni?

:o) Auckland Uni.
Batchlor of Performing Arts majoring in Popular Music. :o) I'm rapped to get in. :o)

OMG, rap?!

You seem to have answered all the questions well enough yourself. It's better to answer it your own way, in your own words, than to have someone else's personality on the form.

RE greatest achievement question- they MUST mean musically, but you've got a great answer lined up for that one anyway!

I e-mailed a friend of mine about it who knows me rather well, and she suggested: "discovering who i am and where i want to go with my life (music) and pursuing it."

I thought that was quite a direct and to the point comment. A little to arrogant?

No- self assertiveness is different to arrogance. It about your personal best, not that you think you are better than anyone else.

umm...hope you don't mind me being blunt but that's awfully sappy, and kinda cliche. I reckon you need to go with something really specific - something distinctly individual that makes you stand out from all the other applicants who are most likely going to be saying very similar things.

Interesting point.... Will take that into consideration when answering hte other questions as well to make it a very round picture.

Thanks. :o)

How about:" I wanna be Like Mick Jagger and Shirley Manson!!! I am in it so i can have the boy i want!"

good luck i hope you make it!

Thanks! :o)

Same here, good luck.

Good luck nz muso! You're gonna need it if you want to beat me.

same here.

:o) Thanks, and please tell me you were kidding about jason gunn being a judge.... please!!!! I'm imporing you!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont' have anythign against the guy, i just don't think he's in the right to be judging it. We don't want a comedian, we want a real serious judge - that would really just make the show look tackier than it alraedy is...

he didn't say that... //Jason Gunn is the host.

and I personally think that he would be bloody brilliant. It would be even better if thingee made a comeback too...and NZ idol couldn't be a more perfect show to stage that cumback.

Apparently Jason is hosting it with some guy from the Edge radio station. Wouldn't have a clue who the judges are.

According to my source, the host is someone other than Jason Gunn, although he has the same hair colour. Someone beginning with ... D. The judges so far are two record industry blokes. Third judge t.b.a. That's what I've heard anyway.

JASON GUNN IS A DRUG ADDICT!!!!!!!

He had to go to rehab a couple of years back....or so i heard.

I read the host is Stables from ZM. Saw that on one of the official pages, but i think it's gone now, so perhaps they've changed their minds or he can't do it anymore. Would be interesting, though i've never seen what stables looks like, i've heard him.

// 3. What is my proudest achievement to date? (Musically or personally? And does making it through singing an entire song at your best friends funeral count?)

It's a trick question of sorts. They are looking to see not what you answer it with, but how you answer it. Like, some people will list a musical acheivement, others will list a personal acheivement. I'm betting that many people will have stuff like "Giving birth to my beautiful daughter, Kayleene."

There's no wrong answer or right answer (well, maybe if you wrote "Doing a poo that was so big it took three flushes to make it go away", that would probably constitute a "wrong" answer). The production staff will no doubt look at all your answers together and try to get an all around picture of you.
