Looking for recommendations :)

Hey all,

With the possibility that at last I'm going to be re-employed, I am starting to dream about ordering some more great music from New Zealand. I'm looking for recommendations of what I might like based on what I have & like already. (Please! Don't just recommend for instance the D4 to me, as I've heard them on Vision 100 and they're not my style. And please, don't throw any rocks...)

My collection so far includes:

Split Enz + following bands (CH, Neil & especially Tim's solo stuff, etc) - TONS of stuff
Dave Dobbyn - Lament for the Numb, Twist, The Islander
The Muttonbirds - all the albums except the first
Goldenhorse - Riverhead (fabulous!)
Eye TV - Fire Down Below
The Feelers - Communicate
Bic Runga - both studio albums, thinking about ordering the new live CD
Stellar* - Mix, Magic Line
Tadpole - Buddhafinger and Medusa, but though they have some good songs I don't think they are always that good
Oceania - Oceania

I'd be particularly interested in knowing how you think Eye TV and the Feelers' other discs are compared with the ones I have (better, worse, even worse if you hate them, whatever :))

Forums: NZ Music,

Supersystem, the Feelers' first release, is far better than Communicate.

With a collection like that I reckon the following are must-haves:
Augustino - One Day Over
Fur Patrol - Pet or Collider, or both
Bressa Creeting Cake - (self-titled)
Goodshirt - Good

If you liked Goldenhorse then you'll like Ben King's new album.

And perhaps check out the following:
SJD - Lost Soul Music
One Million Dollars - Energy State
Strawpeople - either Vicarious or Broadcast
Trinity Roots - True

You should get "An Implied Desire" by leonard then too. Sounds like your kind of thing.

oh yeah, that Bressa Creeting Cake album is a must have. absolutely brilliant.

some others from the southern end of the country - Alistair Galbraith, Robert Scott (and the Bats, and Minisnap as well), Lanky, Anika Moa.

you should check out the Muttonbirds too, if you can. 'Envy of Angels' is miraculous.

I actually find it very difficult to pick which of Salty, Envy of Angels, and Rain, Steam, and Speed is the best. They are all great!

salty is definitely my fave.

Mestar - Porcupine
Nemo
Garageland - Last Exit To Garageland

Ooh, and Pluto - Red Light Syndrome is brilliant, too.

(where is that new album I keep hearing about?)

I found Red Light Syndrome to be kind of...half-hearted. After the live gigs it seems kinda frail. That said, of all my friends that have heard it, opinion seems to be split right in two.

ooo...Supergroove - Traction.

hate made me - 8 foot sativa

I knew Red Light Syndrome before I knew Pluto live, and while I do prefer them live, cos they're more passionate and rockier and oh the vocals, but RLS is often on high rotate. I think their new album will be even better, if it ever comes out.

Dear Santa,

All I want for Xmas is for Pluto to get all the money they need to put out their new album please. Oh and a live DVD too, that'd make my forever.

voom- now i am me- still tops the best nz album of all time- & the best album of the 90's polls

y a w n - i wonder how the eager musician's fingers hovered over the keys before he couldn't resist recommending his own band - (no offence mate - it's only what Lena would say)

sometimes i sink this low- but honestly- ¿can you name a better album?

Thanks to everyone for all the rec's! I'm starting to go down the list of posts, trying to find freebies on NZM to listen to. Turns out I'd already watched Goodshirt's "Blowing Dirt" video... I like "Green" as well so I'm putting them down on my "To Buy" list.

actually- the mad scenes 1st album- trip to monsterland- is ok- & the straitjacket fits 1st ep- life in 1 chord- is pretty good too- specially that cello in she speeds

& shaft- pooty- sgot some magic in it- so does snapper- specially when alan haig was on drums

Bilge Festival - The Shrimp boats. underrated class.

they were great live too. and 'Shrimp Boats' has sure stood the test of time. an interesting mix of Spud and HLAH and melodic pop. way underrated.

bilge festival's first one is yummy - like it even better than shrimp boat. 'cape goat' or somethint'.

yeah they had a goat/wildebeast theme going on with 'Shrimp Boats' too methinks. my old band played a gig with them in Timaru - all our lame arsed friends buggered off after we played, but Bilge Festival were so farking great despite the low numbers. they were also really nice people. and most of all, many of their songs were slightly odd, at the time. which is a very good thing.

I think you'd like the two Stereo Bus albums.

Pilot - the ep

Lucid 3 - Running Down the Keys

The Brunnettes - Holding Hands, Feeding Ducks

Pluto - Red Light Syndrome (goddamned, where's that new CD!!!!???)

Darren Watson - King Size

these would be my recomendations.

i would definately recommend :
the phoenix foundation : horsepower
minuit : the88
dimmer : i believe you are a star

all good!!

its always the way innit- i think groovc is genuine- then some fuckwit points them in totally the wrong direction for a 'laugh'- i havent heard phoenix foundation yet- but ¿minuit & dimmer?- ¿are you & your pals just rolling round laughing at the thought of this poor turkey spending $60 dollars on hogwash?- i guess penis foundation must be crap too- to keep with the joke- you bastards

jesus- ive just read thru all the posts- you guys are all BASTARDS- i mean- theres stuff here i aint heard- but i imagine itll all be crap - cos youre all having a little snigger at groovc's expense- well im gonna fuck your joke up the ass with a bat

groovc sweetie- stay clear of

feelers
Augustino
Fur Patrol
Bressa Creeting Cake
Goodshirt
Strawpeople
Trinity Roots
Alistair Galbraith
Muttonbirds (all don mcfucking¿wheres my gun?glashan)
Garageland
Pluto
Stereo Bus
The Brunnettes

here here, nice but not blans enough for this one...

well i was thinking about recommending the Cloudboy too.

Well, I just listened to some Phoenix Foundation and didn't like it. Too quiet for my tastes. (Rdor, did you mean "not bland enough" for me? :))

Going to the Cloudboy website, I realize that I've heard at least Pretty before. I usually prefer something a bit more energetic, but quite, well, pretty.

I'd recommend Ben King, Pluto, Gramsci and for something a little different, The Bleeders.

Age Pryor - City Chorus.
