This has probably been thrashed out before, but I've been arguing lately with friends and aquaintances ... which is Auckland's best venue and why?
Could it be a close tie between the Dogs Bollix or Kings Arms? Or maybe Galatos or the Odeon or somewhere new or different?
Please feel free to discuss venues in other cities, I am aware that there is live music beyond Auckland ... just that I don't know much about any of them ...

i'm not from AK, but when i went to the kings arms it seemed really wierd. .. especially since there were punk bands playing .. kitsch, bolbox rex etc..
the bands were good enough, but it was like a sports bar.. . just a really suburban kind of feel i reckon ..
my favourite music spot in auckland has to be Fu - it's not a 'venue' as such, but its fucking cool

Have to say I'm a fan of the old K.A. (that rhymes). It's real relaxed I reckon, plus I remember those Sunday afternoons sitting in the sun while practically unknown bands such as the Brunettes layed to a small crowd. It just makes a nice change from all those sterile trying too hard to be modern bars popping up in areas like Grey Lynn (Malt, anyone? Lordy, where have these people come from, it's like the old hood is being invaded by Parnell). Oops, but I'm off the subject.
I've also recently become a fan of the Odeon although there was a time when I swore I'd never set foot in the place (bad memories of seeing a dead friend in a coffin back when that part was still a funeral parlour). However, I did manage eventually to move past that, and I am glad. Gigs there are different somehow - maybe it's that the crowd seems more interested in actually watching the band, rather than just chugging back the beer.
Anyway. My opinion on the matter.

that should be PLAYED to a small crowd. Golly, as far as typos go, that was a goodie.

The Masonic is a pretty sweet venue. It's quite hard for people to get to but once you're there it's pretty cool. If you live in town, catch the ferry over and back. It's great! The venue has been a huge help to local band especially and they don't charge bands anything to play!!!! Boyd is a legend!

the dux is the best venue in the south island if not the whole country, the bands are mostly free and when you play there the dux pays for your posters to be put up. Also the staff are cool and the beer is awardwinning!

even though i've been to the dux over 500 times in the past decade, i wouldn't put it near the top.. the sound is ok, sometimes good (depending on who's manning the desk), the lights are awful.. the stage itself is ok, but the venue itself is just too damn small - and the high drinks prices don't help (let along the affect its had on other venues in christchurch..)
christchurch:
best sound - media club (side room)
best atmosphere - wunderbar
+ the harbour light and creation, which are both brilliant mid-sized venues..
its a pity we don't have any larger bars in the indigo and bar bodega (especially) style though..

I'm looking forward to seeing creation -i've heard good things about it as a venue.
I love the wunderbar, its just a pain in the arse getting there and back without a car, same can be said for the harbourlight.
As for wellington, I used to love going to valve but haven't found any good reason to go there this year... Bodega is great, good beer and good music.
Indigo is pretty good, but when there isn't a ton of people there and everyone is just standing at the sides it looks so empty. A big Hoorah for the balcony though, - good for us non smokers to be able to get some fresh air.
