Anyone Else Suicidal?

Well fuck me. What a shitty game.
I can't understand why we played so badly.
But we all need a scapegoat. I blame Leon MacDonald.

Forums: The Bar,

i dont normaly follow rugby but heres something that may cheer you up.

Q. What Is the National Animal of Australia??
A. a Cheetah

What were you playing, Mister Ibanez? What did you do that was so wrong?

Lacrosse.
I got hit with the ball and it fucken hurt.

Yep ... we were useless. MacDonald was pretty hopeless ... I guess in retrospect they should've included Umaga. Too many errors and stupid penalties meant we didn't get enough possession ... and our lineout went all dodgy too ...

The only good thing to come out of the loss will be Mitchell getting the sack ... stupid Christian Cullen hating jerk that he is!

Stupid all blacks! My grandma plays better rugby!

Why sack Mitchell? he's been awesome for our team. OK sure the whole Cullen thing was a shame but he doesn't deserve the sack. The team need to get familiar with their coach and vice versa, I say keep him.

//why sack mitch?

two words: Graham Henry.

Proven at the top level (unlike Mitch). More qualified, more mature. Way overdue. I've been waiting for him for since he left Auckland to go to Wales.

But anyway what rugby are you talking about? I dont know of any rugby on at the moment...

I agree, I think that instead of sacking the coach automatically every time we lose we should allow both our team and coach to develop. And it's stupid to blame McDonald, he's not a fucking kicker and he's been put in an extremely tough spot because of 'king' Carlos. There's our key liability. Carlos is a confidence player who, when he is off is shit, and when he's on, gets plucky and does stupid things that turn the ball over.
We played badly, we didn't vary our game, we didn't win from set pieces, especially line-outs in which there seemed to be a total communications breakdown, we didn't tackle enough, and when we did we didn't bring the player down fast enough because we were getting in each others way with the constant pairing off thing. They were weak in the middle and we tried to play up the sides.

the whole thing is so hopelessly stacked in favour of england that it's ridiculous .. .
having an english referee on a semifinal between new zealand (who england want to avoid playing at all costs) and australia (who have a pretty shit record against the poms) was crap .. . from the first minute he was obviously favouring australia ..
new zealand was struggling to run the ball because the australians were constantly offside, then as soon as we infringed, there goes the whistle and 3 points to aussie...
would be nice if the world cup was actually a fair contest, and the IRB weren't such a pack of useless corrupt bastards...
anyway, enough about rugby .. . . i'm over that shit now

Nice idea Penny, but the side is going to be completely different next year anyway, due to the fact that this side had the WC at their mercy and totally choked!

I think Henry's the best bet too ...

//why sack mitch?

two words: Graham Henry.

Graham henery has always had his auckland teams made before he has taken over, back in the 80's, stars like zinny, fits and fox were already picked... all he had to do was step in and keep things ticking over, same this time around.

Mitch took a crap english team and coached there forwards into what was for some time a tight five eating monster... but now they are showing some age.

"""And it's stupid to blame McDonald, he's not a fucking kicker"""

actually he is a kicker, hes got the highest average in canturburry in resent times, better than blair or merts. End of the day a lot of hopes and pressure went down on him and I don't think he could handle it in that part of his game.

will be interesting to see the changes next year, I like carlos, but hes not going to be there in four years, so scrape him. aron for first five anyone? or leave him at second and use carter at first, I think he will develop into something very special. Centre is open for me at the moment (I wish marsh, but that can't happen for several reasons... so I'll just have to take up rugby again and fill that role thankyou :p). Rocko, mills and dougy should remain as for as I can tell.. providing they keep there level of skill up and keep developing. Byron has to be used a lot more than he is, it would be a waste to let a player like that slip through the cracks.

//I agree, I think that instead of sacking the coach automatically every time we lose we should allow both our team and coach to develop

I agree with you nicely said! Now lets see how well the all blacks play on the match which decides 3rd and 4th place

Sheesh, wake me in '07.

agreed... I wanted a pill once the whole weight of what happened hit me.

rugby sucks!!!! i advocate for our new national sport to be lawn bowls!! anyone one else keen? :D

shut up grandma!

I played Croquet for my high school sport. It was excellent.

viva le lawn bowls.

please, PLEASE all you jocks that feel the need, go kill yourselves - make new zealand a safer and smarter country.

thank you.

i agree, hey there was a terrorist bombing in turkey today. 20 dead or something.

it would be totally shit to see the News take the 1st 15 minutes of the bulletin with "New Zealands Loss" who cares, its only rugby anyway, i remember last world cup, a plane crashe dinto the atlantic killing 230 people and it only had a small article in the news yet rugby takes it all over, there a sports section you know. lets put rugby in there.

hmm, just because we are pained by the all blacks loss does not mean we don't feel bad or care for the civilians killed in terrorist attacks.

But what can we say about terrorism, its bad, way out of our control, we have no way to comprehend it.. and most of us are quite frankly sick of it and don;t know enough about it. Maybe you should start a topic about it?

oh, and not all rugby/sport fans are jocks. I love rugby and am not a jock by any means... jock is more an attitude, and from my experience, most jocks don't seem to know much about rugby other than they think they're the men if they claim too.

...

I think I love you, DisasterRadio.

enter the obligatory rugby bashing *yawn*
wanna tell us what music we should be listening to as well? How about my clothes, should I be wearing this jacket? perhaps my shoes are a little too, I dunno, new maybe? And jeez y'know I was thinking about seeing Kill Bill tonight, but maybe you'd like me to see something else instead?

"""I can't understand why we played so badly.
But we all need a scapegoat. I blame Leon MacDonald. """

well hes gone now anyway, off on over seas contracts.

I will tell you why we played so badly, it was the same reason I turned off my television at 10-0 (Don't get me wrong, I love the All Blacks with a pasion and take huge pride in there history). But I saw no leadership, no plan B, a team that thought they would role the best national rugby team of the last 15 years. No one gathered them, no one changed tact.

As for players, most of the stand out players are still so young that they could be there with loads of experience in 2007. As for mitch do we allow him to develope, a big part of me says yes, the other part says that he never forced them to go to a new game plan at the half. He also tried to play a heavy backs game to one of the best backlines in world rugby! When south africa has shown that to beat aussie you need todominate the forwards, like we did last week! Eddie jones made his team play to the All Black weak points while we played to there strengths.

You see at the end of the day the most talented team has not made it through to the world cup final (Well that could be the french in some pockets, but the All Blacks over all), and the simple reason was leadership, forget the hype that caged the aussies and boosted the All Blacks egos, no one on that field lead from the front.

Now unlike the soccer world cup, the rugby world cup can be held in a very different and in my opinion better way (this is not my idea, but I agree with it). It is as follows: (imagine for the next world cup).

2006 the top 5 teams in world rugby go through to the world cup final for 2007 (auto qualify)
at this time there is a tournament for all the really crap teams in world rugby, minows. The top
minow team goes through to a second tournament which would contain teams, maybe ranked 6-
13. The addition of the minow team makes it an eight team tournament. This means there will be
more international exposure for lesser teams and more international play for them. From this
tournament the top three go through to meet the five seeded teams in the 2007 world cup

2007 World cup year. The top eight teams of the last 12 months play each other in a round robbin
series, seven games, play everyone once each (including a final, this will only add up to one more
game than what is in the current format). At the end of a round robbin you are left with a true result
of who are the best teams in a tournament.

Then at the end they play a final with the two top teams, this results in there only been one knock
out game. Also means there is no dennying the placing of a team becasue everyone would play
everyone once.

well if you managed to read my rant, then thankyou, and I look forward to comments on the suggested world cup format (suggested on radio sport a few weeks ago before the SA vs NZ test.

Yeah i totally agree with u mate....seems stupid that we have pool games against minnows but yet can't have round robins against the superpowers of rugga to find the true champion rather than just the team whose lucky on the day. Think the Aussies outclassed us on Saturday BUT their not a better team and the true result of the world cup should reflect whose the best team in the world.
I think that promoting rugby in smaller nations is a good thing but not when its detramental to finding the World Champions.......they should tour here on non-world cup years or we could send B'teams to promote the game. All Blacks could of won.....perhaps should of......but until everyone is judged against each other we will never no. We may of be the poms given the opportunity....oh well guess we'll never know:(

Also, if Aussie win the world cup the history of rugby will have been destroyed.

Everyone that knows rugby, knows that New Zealand were king, with south africa for so long, and the welsh. But the welsh got burried so much earlier.

It would be sad to see aussie with three world cups and the write to own the cup. While New Zealand and SA only have it once each. Although south africa did not deserve there 95 win I think they have deserved a world cup win due to there proud and strong history in the game.

Now I can only hope and pray that France win the world cup, besides, this will be there third final with out a win if they go through and lose.

it was SAs first world cup and i would say the 95 win was a present for South Africa - after years of Apartheid and sanctions it came back with a bang.

I agree in terms of the rebuilding of that nation and the coming together of whites and blacks on a even playing field and things.

But from a purely rugby angle, that was NZs best chance to win since 87, and they were the best team... just ashame merts cracked under the overtime pressure and half the team were throwing up on the side line.

we can only hope that England wins the World Cup, Although Australia may have one this time in a certain sport, Its record of "winning" astounds me - maybe because they cheat in everything else ie. Commonwealth/Olympic Games just read my little joke i posted at the beginning of the forum.

hehe, my mad passion for been anti english forces me to support France :)

Man, England play like Cavemen, if they win it's a backwards step for Rugby.

They've come along way since thier Kick - ruck -kick - ruck - kick - ruck days of the 80's and early 90's.

I agree it would be a backstep for rugby....

but on the same note I know that that way of rugby is still on its way out.. England winning would be like its final stand.

Its just I'd rather not see rugby be destroyed in a historic way... for outsiders see the world cup and would think aussie were the great rugby nation, when in actual fact they have only been good for the last 15 years max. Not like soccer where world cup wins show a bit of history.

//show a bit of history

I've said on more than one occassion since leaving godzone that NZ is the greatest rugby playing nation in the world. Now, I honestly believed that to be fact, partly because of the ALL blacks history in the game, which is as much a part of rugby's history as rugby is part of NZ's. Mostly however I've said its due to the highest level of provincial/annual competition available anywhere. NPC, Super 12, tri-nations etc... now Im begining to wonder if I've been wrong for the past 8 years, thoughts?

no, you see you are not wrong.

A history lesson in rugby will show that NZ and south africa are the strongest, aussies are only late comers. Very strong and successful late comers, but for an outsider they would see the world cups nd think aussie are the great rugby nation.

also our internal competition is still the strongest in the world, but it must be cared for if it is to remain that way. We are still probably the only country in the world that can put out three world class and beating teams. Like the aussies in cricket.

I agree, but I think the issue is now more centred around when professionalism hit. It's my opinion that the AB's and NZRU have been the worst team/union to deal with professionalism. Closely followed by South Africa.

Only those countries that understand competing at the highest level of world class PAID sport have evolved well. The leaders in this era are Australia, France and England.

I believe the reason for this is that within those societies there is a level of understanding of competing on a global stage. Its a collective knowledge and confidence that is stable, has been present for some time, and is an steady influence from all sport, business, and entertainment sectors.

The second factor I need to purge is media: NZ rugby media, especially newspaper journo's are terrible. In some ways I agree with LSam that this isn't a nation 'in mourning' as the crappy sports edotors would like to have you believe. I don't know what it is but its not that, and its such predictable cack that for me is continual evidence of how we may have the best players in the world but the worst hacks commenting on it (and therefore creating a bad division between the fans and the team/union/sport).

On that note: big ups to the TV One team for making the big play of bringing in Fox and Hart. Stunning move and what a team to have calling the plays - NOW thats bringing some intellect into the one facit of the media and educating the public. It can't make up for Keith Quinn but what could?

And finally, did anyone notice how about 4 weeks after Henry's return to Auckland (albeit a very quiet return) the Auckland rugby empire began to rebuild? Now look at them.

I think like you, we have struggled to join the proffessional age.

But I also think that the killer instinct, the absolute desire to win, second place means nothing attitude (in a one cup race) has been trainned out of us. We participate, which is very good, but we don't always allow people to step out and be far better than there pairs. This does not have to result in teaching cheating, but to win at all costs. Makes for gritty, gutsy players that stick it out to the bitter end.

To often our teams have become like a dear trapped in the headlights at the last or second to last hurdle.

so the horrible year for new zealand sport should be over now I hope.
cricket, should of gone far further, but safety issues did not allow us to by a second chance in the second round... and a slump in the openning match. Maybe NZs best chance at world cup glory gone.

Americas cup falls to bits

possum killed in road accident

All Blacks knocked out in semi final upset.

the one shining light maybe the net ball world cup, bu then only two countries can really play the game.. with a couple that almost come up to scratch from time to time. Oh, I guess we did okay in the rowing... but who really cares anymore.

// the one shining light maybe the net ball world cup,

oh, I dunno...

4th at the last basketball world champs ain't too bad (for what is a *real* global game, and a professional one, at that).

and we've still got a few petrol-heads flying the flag (scott dixon and greg murphy being the obvious examples)

and if there was the equivalent of a bledisloe cup for league, NZ would have it for the moment.

as a nation, we pretty much punch above our weight in most sports. it's just a pity we live across a sea from another nation that performs at a similar level, but has a population about five times bigger.

//and if there was the equivalent of a bledisloe cup for league, NZ would have it for the moment.

Amen to that brother. That test was magnificent to watch! Started badly but just got better and better. That said, it was Aus 'C' vs. NZ 'B'!

//as a nation, we pretty much punch above our weight in most sports. it's just a pity we live across a sea from another nation that performs at a similar level, but has a population about five times bigger.

Yeah, great point. I heard from someone that we have one of the best per-capita Olympic medal counts in the developed world. Might be bollocks but if it's true, hooray - take your pessimism glasses off.

//and if there was the equivalent of a bledisloe cup for league, NZ would have it for the moment.

It was still only one test win each between NZ and Aussie this year ... so a drawn series. Not that I can blame anyone for erasing the mid-year test from their memories!

ah hem Black Ferns versus The World.

murph and dixon have done well... and wasn't the basket ball last year?

but over all I'm coming from the perspective of what really mattered to the majority of people on a sporting stage... and you will find the americas cup and rugby world cup would be way out in front. The others were nice icings on the cake, but there was no cake to place it on.

"Thorne said the support was fantastic, but it also had its down side. 'New Zealand supporters - some will come up to you and say Good Luck, but most will say Don't let us down. There is quite a big difference in that. We do our best, but the reality is that you can't win them all' " - Dominion Post, Friday 14th November.

I'm a bit guttered that we lost the game, since, for once in my life I actually stayed up and watched a game of ruggers. The All Blacks weren't on form last night at all, and you gotta admit - gregen and his team are awfully sly, but lets face it - the All Blacks were under a lot of pressure....from everyone...it's fair enough they buckled. lets not get too depressed about it hey? get behind them for next weeks game....

you know what would suck worse than coming third?....coming fourth.

//what would suck worse...
Nah, not really, eh man. They didn't get it done when it mattered so now it just doesn't matter.

every game matters. build a bridge, walk over it and support your team.

I do support them! but they lost, Im gutted and all the fucking bridges in the world won't change that.

Boo bloody Hoo. The world turns. Get over it

Yes the world turns, but stuff happens on the world while it turns that affects people in different ways. Some people have a passion for rugby and would like to discuss it. Get over it.

all and all its just another brick in the wall
