Hey foodies

Um, here seems as good a place to ask. Some friends from NZ and I have been trying to recall whether you can buy galangal in NZ?

It's a kinda vaguely floral tasting root, looks like ginger but pink. I've also seen it dry in strips.

I don't remember seeing it, but maybe I didn't know where to look.

Forums: The Bar,

When I say I've seen it, I should add I'm in Australia.

Have you tried any of your local asian markets? usually thats the best place to start, where is Aus are you?

bugger, where IN aus are you?

I'm in Melbourne. Sorry, if I wasn't clear, I can get galangal here and I love it. What I'm trying to figure out is whether you can get it in NZ as well, cos I never used it when I was in NZ.

When swapping recipes with friends (as all self respecting kiwi blokes do, right?) I threaten to give them laksa recipes and so on involving galangal but I don't know if it's available.

Sounds like kangaroo balls. U aussies are into em aren't ya?

Um, I'm not an Aussie, I'm just living here, but I've never heard of anyone eating kangaroo's nuts. I like roo muscles, though. It's the only red meat I buy.

You can find it at some Asian grocery stores.

I saw this topic, and I said to myself, "limegreen is going to know the answer to that."

Best Asian store is the one in Howick.

The asian markets in Auckland and Wellington have all the herbs, spices and roots you'll evr need, and a t good prices.

I buy mine frozen from the Thai shop in Mt Albert.
