who cares ??? how many rock singers sing in the same voice they speak in .. .
i like americanised vocals in hip hop anyway . ..
not dissing yourself of course :)
Grusome, you have to understand that vocal wise you have to say stuff about your local environment in the same voice you talk in. That's why anyone who likes any of Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, The Beatles, Beck and Nick Cave is a sucker.
haha i have to admit, it (usually) sounds really random when people rap in kiwi accents. like on that ill semantics song 'highway' and the chick in it has a reallllly new zealand accent. it kind of sounds out of place or something...
Has anyone else ever thought about how similar freestyle MCing is to theatresports/improvisational comedy? Both involve making up witty rhymes on the spot and both rely on audience response. Yet one is really cool and the other is kind of dorky (though I'm not sure which is which).
Who cares how about accent man, the cool stuff about hip-hop is getting ripped and listening to the ryhmes and flow of the song.Especially scribes new shit its wack
Not sure about *all* the hiphop artists in NZ, but I know that I've heard a lot of people talking like Nesian Mystik rap/sing...I'm not saying that makes everything ok, but I'm starting to think that your issue isn't just with rappers/artists/whatever, but it's with the entire maori/polynesian youth culture. Perhaps artists aren't deliberately putting on a fake accent to rap in, but their influences - often american - are having an impact on their (and their peers') accents.
I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with that - I've got a slight OE accent just from spending time in the UK. In general accents change considerably even between generations, so I doubt you could place too much ancestral/historical significance in it. I imagine even the great maori accent that half my schoolfriends in Whakatane had isn't necessarily more than 50 years old.
I mean - take it to its extreme - ultimately you could argue that a maori or polynesian artist is only keeping it "really real" if they rap in their native language.
good points but your voice defines who you are, who you are defines your culture.
I think it's a major blow in the heart that Maori and Polynesian youth want to be American.
it's perhaps the beginning of the end for these amazing cultures.
// why not - that would be ace, why isnt there more?
going by the population numbers, there is a fair bit, and a lot of it is quite popular. A bit like country music, it doesn't get mainstream success, but it's definitely popular amongst the target audience, and some of the acts get a lot of overseas attention (Te Vaka & Moana being the obvious examples).
If a New Zealand-based MC was born in Samoa, speaks Samoan as his first language, and learned English when he was a child, why should be be required to speak English with a New Zealand accent? Why is a New Zealand accent more real for someone speaking English as a second language?
Not everyone who lives in this country speaks English with a stereotypical New Zillun accent.
Welllthat aussi Hip Hop mag (stealth, good mag) certainly thinks'real' accents are important. They claimed Drak Tower were the only good hiphop act in NZ....Mr Trillion I think your beats are wicked and yous guys seem to be getting a distinct flavour with every passing year....but.....all the primo shit like Scribe, decepticonz etc is actually fckn good Hiphop regardless of what accents may be put on. Scribe rhymes in fairly Kiwi accent, just not an exagerated Kiwi brogue.
and anyway Mick Jagger sung like an American and I still love 'im.
The best freestyler in NZ is ME...but I wont be doing it in public antil 2007 (by the way a MC in british accent like Dizzie Rascal coz "its my perogitive")
good point,
Aussie hip hop is way more advanced than NZ hip hop, they actually know themselves.
