I know you guys are probably really sick of me by now, but could i please have any (decent please!) suggestions for audition songs. Keeping in mind it has to be done without music, have a decent tune, and i'm a soprano....
But the NZ idol is coming up soon, and is also good to have a reportois of songs in case any other auditions come up. I'd love any suggestions. I like things like R.E.S.P.E.C.T. and anything with a bit of life in it. I can do the slow soppy stuff, and it's nice, but i want something fun and powerful.
So can i please have some good suggestions? Any time is fine. 60's through to today.....

Yeah, 'Respect' specifically would be a bit crap cos so much of it's call and response styles. Although it's got the powerful vocal, there's all the backing parts and it would make no sense without them. I guess a lot of r&b is like that, stemming from gospel and all.
What about Aretha's 'Rocksteady'? Not too well known maybe, and I guess you need something fairly popular.
Another thought: I always liked 'Just Be Good To Me', most well known when covered as 'Dub Be Good To Me' by Beats International. I've got the acapella of the Beats International version on a record and the tune stands up well without the music, I think.
If these things aren't suitable for a soprana, sorry.. I don't know much about vocal ranges.

Thanks for the advice. And not all girls are soprano. Soprano's have a very high vocal range often - most are alto's or metro-soprano's i think.... I can't remember what order they go in....
But i have a powerful mid range, which is why i was thinking along the lines of RESPECT. But thanks for teh advice, i'll look the songs up.

Perhaps a new zealand song?
So many people try to pull of that black woman gruff growl thing on those idol type shows, and it ends up coming off crap I think. if you want to do something in that vein may I suggest a Burch Bacharach song (if you decide to go international). In fact "Walk on by" in an upper register would be interesting

Burt bacharach... i'm sure he did some cool stuff... can't quite remember....
Heaps of Burt Bacharach's famous ...
Heaps of Burt Bacharach's famous tracks were written for other people in the 60s and 70s, so you'd never hear from the radio that they were Bacharach songs.
eg.
'Close To You' by The Carpenters
'Always Something There to Remind Me' by Sandie Shaw
'What's New Pussycat?' by Tom Jones
'Say A Little Prayer' by Aretha Franklin
'Walk On By' and 'Do You Know the Way to San Jose?' by Dionne Warwick
'Make It Easy On Yourself' by the Walker Bros
'The Look of Love', 'I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself' and 'Wishing & Hoping' by Dusty Springfield
... and most of those songs have been done by a lot of different people.
Then of course there's 'Rain Drops Keep Falling On My Head' :)

If you can pull it off and you really really want to impress them, I remember seeing Bic Runga at Rhumba (hey, i got free tickets okay?) and the way she just launches into the really high bit in "Something Good" ("I know romance is not in fashion...") without a care in the world - that could knock their socks off if you did it right.
From an avid viewer's perspective, don't do a song that's in the charts right now, so that cuts out Brooke Fraiser. It's got to be something that has a little bit of distance on it so you can give it your own interpretation.

Ok, here's my audition song advice ...
Ok, here's my audition song advice based on watching "American Idol" and "Australian Idol".
Remember on Australian Idol when they had a montage of all the different people who'd sung Alicia Keys' "Fallin'"? If you can pick something a little unconventional (that Portishead song is a good suggestion), then you'll at least give the judges something fresh and new, and you'll stand out that way.
Obviously you need a song that can show off your vocal ability. A song that has long instrumental pauses isn't going to work. You need something that'll hook the judges from the start. It doesn't have to be a huge bombastic opening (like "Respect" has), but just something that'll make the judges think "Hmmm... I'd like to here more."
If you do pick a song like "Respect" - i.e. one that is strongly identified with one particular singer, make you you can sing it as well as, if not better than that singer. Because if you pick "Respect" people will sub-consciously be comparing it to Aretha Franklin's version, so if you can't so anything new or interesting with it, pick another song.
Oh, and stay away from those "uber notes" (like when Mariah Carey screams in tune), and also avoid those "wooa-ooo-ooo-ooaaah" warbles. They're cliches and won't win any bonus points.

Definitely! Working on that, and if i get into uni, you have to form a band anyway as far as i know to fulfill the performance side of your papers.
I do it for the experience. These other singers too are like minded, and not everyone enters for pop songs. I like blues and jazz and stuff, though still figuruing out what to sing for auditions.....

Hah! I'm Randy Jackson dawg. What I mean is all nzmers who are thinking about entering should go in as their username and score us some cheap laughs. Whoever is the best should get a prize like a free 'NZmusic.com t-shirt'.
by the way I'm singing 'back at one' or a stevie wonder tune.
im not saying that your not talented nz ...
im not saying that your not talented nz muso (you probably are, i havent yet seen you) but if you want your own recording contract, just work for it in otherways apart from going on a no-good trashy TV Show where the biggest attention starved Camera hogs (whos High-Ranking Multinational Mgmt working daddys pulled strings to get them on the show) linger.
can i suggest writing your own material, booking in time at a recording studio and recording your stuff and after Pre-and Post production release your album, Its better to get a whole carer behind you and continue to release albums in say 10 or 15 years time rather than going on this made-for-tv bullshit where you release one or 2 singles and are never heard of again 3 weeks later except reguarly visiting your case manager at WINZ.
I Hope this constructive criticism helps you out, and although im totally against pop music, i would have to tell you that releasing a string of albums even in 15 years is better than releasing 1 or 2 single then 3 weeks later end up at your local branch of WINZ looking for work.
I totally agree with you on many of ...
I totally agree with you on many of this - though i think personally, for me, it's all about knowing what you want out of this experience. Some people are only in it cos they have a good voice adn their friends pressured them into it, and have no idea about what they want out of it til they're smack in teh middle of it. Even if i don't win (would be good, but in saying that, you'd be better to be one of the final 12 just so your name is there) you can still use the contacts perhaps if you get that far. I think what cosima did on aussie idol (she was in the final 3 and pulled out) was probably a good choice, cos though she had the fans to perhaps get her to the top, she won't be labeled quite as much as the final two. She can bring out her own stuff in her own time, and still be remembered. I think tha'ts the best you can do.

Luci, if you'd made the effort and actually watched any episodes of "Australian Idol", you would have noticed that all the semi-talented attention-seekers are either denied a further audition by the judges, or if they do make it any further, their limited performance talent soon makes itself apparent and if the judges don't give them the boot, the home voters do.

robyn, robyn, robyn....how many friggin times to i have to tell you - DADDY PULLED STRINGS TO GET THEM ON TV, do i make myself clear?? or do i have to repeat myself over and over again???
Well, my dad's not rich, and doesn't ...
Well, my dad's not rich, and doesn't have influence, and i still managed to pass my music certificates at school, i've won a few talent competitions, and i've been on tv before singing.
Some of us, are lucky to be blessed with a talent in our lives. Mine was singing. So please let those of us with those talents, utilise what opportunities may present themselves - no matter how stupid you think they are. I'm sorry, but i don't want to wreck my voice and my lungs by performing week after week in a crowded pub trying to get noticed. Forgive me if i'm looking for a more direct way in. Don't think i wouldn't do it if i had to - but at hte moment, i'm taking all opportunities while i prepare myself elsewhere.
So from a my-dad-has-no-strings-to-pull girl, to where ever your heart is hiding, give me half a chance, and believe in me. And let me make a fool of myself if i will, but if i get into the final 12, you have to eat a pair of your underwear or soemthing. :o) Jokes, just have a little faith, that there are a few of us out there actually with talent.

after reading your post im convinced that you are one of the "good ones" :-)
pardon my "liberated" attitude i absorbed almost 4 years to the day, its because of this liberation i think differently and alternatively, sure there are those rich and spoilt daddys boys/girls that star in these reality shows whos parents do pull the strings (my view on this can never change) but as i say after reading your reply, your one of the realistic ones out there.
but i do suggest rather than wasting time and gambling on your future on some pointless TV Show, actually going it alone, sure it might cost a bit of money but at least this way your not gambling on your career and your success could be assured (if you can go back to where this thread started i mentioned booking in recording studio session)
