sorry i can't spell youghet, the new one from fresh n fruity i think? freash and fruity loves you and it runs up to the camera and hits it and makes a big plank sound.
And that new placemakers ad, cause the daughters a hottie
With a (long term) memory spanning back to 1982 at the earliest i can recall some of my favorite all time TV Commercials.
- The kiwi-bacon ads with these schoolkids in em (they'd be in there late 20s at least nowadays) i can remember the star of the ad - a boy sitting around the kitchen bench waiting for his bacon and eggs to be cooked.
- The 'Anchor family' back in the early 90s
- The tiddlywinks cough syup commercial (that bed-ridden boy with the flu) i think that ad goes back to the mid 70s (noticing the dopey Mrs-Brady like haircut of the mother) - before my time, it was a favorite when i was 3 or 4.
- The Pixie Caramel ad where that geezer about to face a firing squad jumps over the wall (they still played it till around 3 or 4 years back)
- The Crunchie Train Robbery Ad. (although i cant remember it being played prior to around 1989-90, it was actually filmed in the early 70s)
- The "Jason" McDonalds Ad series.
and alhough not an ad in sense the Good night Kiwi and Cat, used to play at 11.59pm weeknights (1am weekends) it was only 1993 when they canned this timeless classic for insomnia medication - 3am Infomercials.
didnt there also used to b a goodnight kiwi ad which played at like 8.30ish...telling all the kids it was time for bed cos an AO programme was about to b played...?...or is it just my imagination...
It was just the modern incarnation of the TV Kiwi ad where Kiwi used to go to sleep at the end of the day's television transmission. Before someone realised they could play informercials all night.
yeh there was - it was TV trying to dictate what time parents would send there kids to sleep, only parents set the timing not the TV, i can understand some fairly "unislamic" programs come on after 8.30 but in another way i can understand why censorship needs to be abolished.
That Nike ad featuring a guy being chased by a chicken through a city - genius. My favourite commercial of recent years. I used to like those old Sega ads from the early 90s - those ones with el-cheapo computer animated characters previewing Megadrive games. Those were the days.
* The Coruba ads that used to be played at the movies in the days before it was legal to advertise alcohol on television.
* The old Datsun "we are driven" ad from the late '70s. It's only of my earliest childhood memories.
* That dumb ad for "Mello Yello" (a softdrink Coke used to make), simply because it was fun to sing along with it and make rude words.
* Those Fernleaf butter ads from the mid '80s with Barb, the crazy American lady and Sally, the good Kiwi butter using mum. "You make their lunches? You don't? You do! Oh, Sally!"
* FruJu ads, because of the consistancy over the years. Chicks in bikinis getting up to no good with ice blocks.
You guys remember the cartoon KFC ad with the family out driving in the country, the happy little car bouncing along. "...I said to Hugo "no, you go"..." it ran about he same time as the Crunchie "Train robbery" ad (both classic kiwi ads).
"World famous in New Zealand" (man I miss L&P).
"We're the boys from down on the farm..." (mmm cheese)
And that Pioneer stereo ad (that got taken off the air) with the bikini girl sun bathing and dancing about while all those dudes dressed like gorillas fell out of the tree's and shit.
//You guys remember the cartoon KFC ad with the family out driving in the country, the happy little car bouncing along. "...I said to Hugo "no, you go"..."
I like that ad because its authentic, nowadays far too many advertisments contain hidden messages within them. I studied that KFC ad in media studies and as a class the first thing all of noticed when were were watching the ad was just how obese the entire family in the car is. back when the ad was first broadcast, the public would probably not have noticed that fact as much as they would if they were to broadcast that ad now. I mean, how many fat models do you see in fast food ad's these days? the public is constantly being manipulated into believing stuff like this.
[NB: yes, I do realise that KFC cannot make a family actually act like that. ]
and the sad thing is, the whole point of TV is advertising. Society would probably fall apart without TV advertising.
the ches and dale ads, they ran for like 35 or 40 year i think, they where still playing till as late as 2000.
I cannot remember the KFC ad with the bumpy car or whatever....sounds like it was before my time.
I can't believe no one remembers the Pioneer girl she was SOOOO hot and wearing next to nothing (hence them taking it off the air) but whatever I guess Im alone in this one.
The Speights ads used to be good. "Good on ya mate". Understated, simple and so New Zealand. But they've kind of lost their way a bit, like the one where they get locked in the Speights factory. There's a new billboard in Kilbirnie on the road back from the airport - one Southland dude asks the other Southland dude "have you ever been in love?" and the other guy replies "yeah, there was a filly once but i had to shoot her". What the fuck? Is that hinting at beastiality or is it just showing that he's a cold bastard and only loves his beer? Am I thick because I don't get it. They're just not as clever as they used to be.
// Is that hinting at beastiality or is it just showing that he's a cold bastard and only loves his beer?
I think it's probably more supposed to be hinting at the very real bond between a person and a great horse. Most people who know me would agree I'm not fond of animals, but horses are a different story. Also, for a musterer on a high country station, the chances of meeting a single woman weren't great. I think it's perhaps just tapping into a somewhat lost culture. I'm not being critical of you at all. I think that sort of thing is a rapidly dying culture, and not really very applicable in Kilbernie, or Kelburn, or well pretty much most places.
according to legend, the crunchie ad was shot around Paekakriki in the summer of 1973, they got the Kingston Flyer on the ferry and brought up to wellington just for the occasion.
I Can remember the Priest and the Little Old Lady in that commercial did an ad for McDonalds about 2 or 3 years ago, Mcdonalds where giving away crunchie bars with combo meals or something.
Between my flatmate and I, we ended up wtih four bottles of lavendar Radox shower gel by mistake. Every time I used it, i was singing to myself "Radox, it sounds a bit liek gravy ox".
One about a bunch of students making their test at a classroom, the teacher says "time's up", all the student give the test to the teacher, and then there's this one guy that is completing the test very late.
When he get up to give the test to the teacher, he says: "You're late, leave the test with me".
The student says: "Do you even know who I am??". The teacher says: "I have no Idea".
So, the guy grabs all the other test and put his test in the middle of the others, and then he leaves the room.
Banal, I know, but I really liked the flatmates-style Export Gold ads. I still have yet to track down the matrix parody that my best-friends-in-the-whole-world taped for me and kept for 10 months while I was in the UK.
I like ads where you're not even watching TV properly but the ad comes on and you think - hey, that jingle's really catchy...Then two weeks later you discover it's a cool new band called Supergroove, or the Datsuns (or a cool old band you didn't pay much attention to before, like the Dandy Warhols).
There's no way I'm eating more KFC just because of a catchy tune, but I'll surely be googling the band the following day.
