About the show

Hum, a new music video series showcasing music videos from the less mainstream end of the spectrum begins screening this Friday at 11.05 pm on TV ONE.

The series will be hosted by well-known television music reviewer and presenter Francesca Rudkin.

It will feature music ranging from veteran alternative acts such as Radiohead, Beck and REM, to dance and hip-hop stars like Moby and Outkast, modern country artists like Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, and newer bands including the White Stripes and the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Hum producer Michael Higgins worked on the critically acclaimed Kiwi music series Give It A Whirl. He says that during the making of that series he was reminded of just how important Radio With Pictures had been in the 1980s. He hopes viewers will come to regard Hum as a direct descendant of that show.

"The series will be quite similar to the old RWP in that it will feature music from the alternative/quality/grown-up end of the spectrum. It will be a little oasis of great music on a Friday night."

Higgins said the series would have a strong New Zealand music content. It has received some New Zealand On Air funding to support this.

"There'll also be room for the occasional classic track, and for some musician interviews and lots of information about the artists featured."

More discussion of the same link is in the topic entitled "Punks".

opps, my face is red now

I doubt seeing a topic called 'Punks' would necessarily lead you to think it was about this TV show... :)

well they are :)

But the "Punks" thread is more about the show's name, rather than the show itself.

Well so far it's not horrible, and yeah it is definately aimed at a more mature market... thank god
2 new nz vids... shihad and fur petrol

Something about it reminds me of that programme Marie Azcona used to present on channel one.

which shihad vid did they play aka?

The new live Home Again one.

for real, why would they not advertise they were doing that.

all and all I was statisfied with the show ... yes of course it would be better on a sunday, but a late night friday relax with a good drama following is all good too, ... so much less in your face and anyoning than space .. yeah it is on my list of to sees, unless the should be a friday gig worth going to within driving distance.

I was satisfied with "Hum". It seems to be aimed at the kind of person who is a music lover, but might not have the time or energy to keep up with what's beyond the top 40. I'm thinking of an old friend of mine who used to be into angry grrrrl grunge in the '90s, but since she's had kids she only really gets to listen to what her kids listen to.

I enjoyed the selection of videos, especially that one by June Carter Cash, which I was surprised to discover I liked. That kind of electic selection is what makes Hum different from the typical selections on C4. At one stage I swtiched over to C4 to see what was playing. It was Scribe's "Not Many" video (again). I was most grateful for the variety on "Hum".

Francesca Rudkin's presenting style was a little impersonal. It reminded me too much of the announcing she does on the popular music channel on Air New Zealand's in-flight entertainment. A nice soothing voice, a bit of information, some trivia, but not much personality or opinion. Maybe that's just me being a Francesca Rudkin fangirl, but I want her to be a bit more *there* and not just a talking head.

I'm glad "Hum" exists. It's definitely filled a gap that was missing from New Zealand television. And after the "Big Night In" debacle, it's reassuring that TVNZ can get some things right.

I'd agree with your comments on Francesca Rudkin ... but it was an alright selection of videos ... kudos TVNZ (apart from the name thing).
