punks!

// Hum, a new music video series showcasing music videos from the less mainstream end of the spectrum begins screening this Friday at 11.05 pm on TV ONE.

jesus....i buy the hum.co.nz domain and "hum" number plate like several years ago and start to build the hum brand in nz music, through a indie label and a magazine and then get dicked like this.....

The original concept for choosing the name hum was based around a music show featuring non-mainstream music called "humTV"...'doh.

The wellington band called "hum" apparently named themselves after my number plate, i hope these punks didn't rip me off...haha

Forums: NZ Music,

Shit eh............. !

our household saw the ad on tv, and that's exactly what popped into our minds - "can't believe they chose that name, the bastards", but yeah, the timeslot means that people who are really into music will be out listening to the real alt.nz

another doomed Franscesca (who is neat) fronted thing - how's it gonna compete with C4? they should've made it riveting and unmissable instead of half-arsed and half-baked. i should reserve my judgement until it screens, but i'm gonna be out jumping and screaming with Scribe on Friday night, so i'll tape it and fast forward thru the ads on Sat morning ...

iluvtheclean, do you live in dunnas?

aye. i'm on constant pilgrimage in this city.

If it is any good, can I borrow it? I think I'll be hitting the Guinness too hard to be bothered about any half-arsed TV programme, even if Francesca is on it. See you next Wed.

taped it, missed Scribe (sold out! good on the wee fellah, but us really bummed out), watched some of Hum but got a bit bored ... will lend - see you at our gig when you get back!

"Hum, a new music video series showcasing music videos from the less mainstream end of the spectrum ... Outkast, Pacifier, The Strokes, Fur Patrol, Radiohead, Beck and REM"

wow. some really non-mainstream stuff there.

"hip-hop stars like Moby"

ahaha!

and I will never understand why they play these sorts of shows on a friday night when anyone with a decent interest in music is probably out a gig somewhere. the sunday night RWP slot was far and away the best time for this sort of show (and TVNZ can bring back the sunday night horror movie, while they're at it).

TV3 have started the late nite horror up again
yeah Firday nite worked well back in the day when welly closed at 6... I have very very fond memories of fridays nights with my living room filled with folks and smokes while watching music, max head room and the young ones.
But hey comeon you of all people noisy.. being a parent and all must know that we all can't get out every night of the weekend and why the hell should be put up with site like Edwards at large and nz show case,

BLink being the resoursefull wee fellow that you are will come up with a plan to turn this to your advantage...

// being a parent and all

ah yes, well I'm asleep by 11pm anyway, so no good for me either. Back in the day when I was an out-and-about music fan, Friday night was definitely a stay-out-late, not-watch-telly sort of night. Surely it's the same for the 20somethings now?

But they did say "less mainstream end of the spectrum" not "indie" or "lo-fi" or whatever. And they could certainly argue that at least some of the performers mentioned are not as mainstream as, say, Britney or Justin or Robbie or Zed.

And I agree with your comment re the scheduling ... RWP on a Sunday night was the perfect way to end a weekend ...

// But they did say "less mainstream end of the spectrum"

true. although, every one of those international acts has had a #1 US/UK single and/or album (if not several), which makes them pretty mainstream in my eyes. Likewise with the NZ acts in NZ.

alt.mainstream, perhaps, as opposed to pop.mainstream.

// "less mainstream end of the spectrum"

yeah...understand your call big stu...however ALL those artists are played on the ZM network at some time or other. In my eyes, that is mainstream...it is kinda wanky to say "less" or "more" mainstream. The fact is, those artists are popular and do not need further assistance. You might say the show is promoting the "COOL end of the mainstream" ie. Radiohead, Beck, the White Stripes and The Strokes.

Pacifier and Fur Patrol are 2 of THE most mainstream NZ artists, they may not be pop like carly binding, zed or brooke fraser. But they are still pretty mainstream.

the mainstream argument argument could go on forever.

ahh. noizy bet me to it...and much more eloquently as per usual.

//the mainstream argument argument could go on forever. //

Yep!

And the shame of that is that a lot of good music is to be found in the mainstream ... plenty of dross as well. But I could say the same about all the little sidestreams and tributaries of music as well.

Kinda sad that there isn't a show like RWP anymore ... though let us not get to maudlin and romantic about it ... most of the content was sourced from overseas.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could find our own little gem like Jools Holland and produce a show like "Later with ..." Admittedly he has some mainstream stuff on there, but usually it is all gold ... best thing on telly I reckon ... after cricket and footy that is!

I wonder if one of the reasons that we don't see shows with more indie type content is simply that the demographic that such a show would appeal to are not huge telly consumers anyway ... like it or not commercial telly (the only kind we have in NZ) is largely funded by advertising ... if you don't attract the right demographic you don't get the moolah ... end of story. So all you indy fans get out there and consume all those lovely caffienated, carbonated drinks and buy lots of renaults and all that stuff for your hair and then maybe we can have some cool NZ music on the telly.

next they'll be telling us that Zed is avant garde

that really is low of them

low of them...haha, brilliant.

yeah...noizy, good point. 11pm on a friday, I don't even get to watch space cause i'm usually at shows, now another music show to miss.

I'm truly sorry for the degradation of your brand blink. absolutley gutting. they should know better.

is it just me or is tv becoming a little parasitic in terms of NZ music lately?

on a similar note; you may know that this site started as UploadTV.com, which was the "Web TV" part of our hosting company called Upload. Upload still hosts this site and is a brand that is quite connected with NZ music in general.

So.... it was very dissappointing to find that Base2 and Channel Z had created a radio show about NZ music scene called Upload. More disapointing was that it was seemingly created by people that were quite aware of our Upload brand.

However the people behind-the-scenes are just simply nice people, and front-of-scenes one can't say enough great things about Barnaby Weir (one of the presenters) - just an absolute world class talent in so many ways.

It's vaguely sad this sort of thing happens in such a small industry, one that must have a strong voice (and brands) that talk to the rest of the world. Its a bit like watching a community eat itself sometimes.

But hey, the sun still shines eh!! :)

cheers dust....i actually thought Upload had something to do with NZM, because of Barnabys connection with you lot...ahwell.

I wonder if Homegrown on C4 has any connection to National radio's programme.

I don't think "Hum" babywear will be too concerned (www.humbaby.co.nz) at the use of the hum name, but it frustrates me somewhat.

take the internet out of the picture and how the hell is "upload" an appropriate name for a nz music show on radio anyway? pretty stupid all round really. la la la

dam dude, let it out. ;)

it would frustrate the hell out of me! I'm really ashamed of this place sometimes...

i like the name barnaby...i remember a show called dark shadows from when i was really young..it was soap opera and the main character was a vampire called barnaby jones.....a very weird soap opera mind you but a soap opera nonetheless.....

and those cunts who go around painting NZM logos on black shirts
i've seen em around!!!
i have!!!
cool cool rock n roll
with a touch of copyright breach to go :D
honestly
kids these days

ah ha, i couldn't quite put my fnger on why the name "Hum" made me wrinkle up my wrinkly old man brow.
bit of a shittier that one. you need to find a lazy journalist on a slow news day and you'll have a front page/6pm news little-guy-takes-on-a-behemoth story... maybe you could cry too ;-)
it should be sunday night though if they really are going for that RWP feel.
Francesca is all good though, a really nice lady with a genuine love of music and a great screen presence. Her and Mike Hosking are fucking funny when they get squabbling on "Breakfast" sometimes, this morning was a riot in partciular.
typical TVNZ 'effort' though : a day late and a dollar short as usual...

She Thinks she missed the train to mars... she's out there counting stars

the name of the show got me thinking of that song which is from a mid 90s band called Hum, songs called "Stars"

Bro the video for that song is mean. Classic song - anyone know anything about the band?

released a couple of albums....went from indie darlings touring with Shellac and The Jesus Lizard to mainstream rockers touring with Bush...they broke up in 1998. Apparently their last album was pretty good, nobody bought it though. "Stars" was their only big song. Hum (the band) in a nutshell.

...

Downward is Heavenward is a friggin classic.
Must buy.

cheers for the heads up stefan....i have heard its good from several sources, so might check it out.

you can borrow my copy if you want.

And that video was done by Andy Mueller.

P.S I heard that Michel Gondry is doing Steriograms video this week. Thats ridiculously amazing.

sorry to read this today man.

who decided to call it Hum? the producer? TVNZ? sorry i don't know much about how all this works. just that it sucks.

// jesus....i buy the hum.co.nz domain and "hum" number plate like several years ago and start to build the hum brand in nz music, through a indie label and a magazine and then get dicked like this....

My understanding is that with dictionary words used as brand names, you can use a name that another company is using, as long as your product is completely different from theirs. The famous example is that of the Beatle's Apple Records and Apple Computers.

Are you going to ask the Hum TV show to change their name, or are you just going to bitch about it here?

cheers robyn.

I sent Francesca (producer) an email earlier today. I am proactive.....and since this show could spell the end of years of work of mine, i am being very earnest on this matter...

I mean imagine a NZ indie label called "space" or "squeeze"...i mean, god!

I was told the other day that ironically Apple records is now actioning Appple Computers because of iTunes.

Apparently, Computers and software don't compete with a record company, but selling music via iTunes does.

Blink, I reckon the next album you put out should be called Squeeze's greatest hits.

i have squeeze's greatest hits. it's a fabulous album ... okay it isn't quite called that (see below) but no never you mind ... by the way - every young'un should have to learn the words to "is that love" ..

yeah...apple corps and apple computers had a court settlement years ago with apple computers saying that they would never enter the "music industry" and they would stick to computers...so when recently:

apple release i-pods/i-tunes etc under the name "applemusic"
apple negotiate with Univeral to buy the company.

the beatles got a wee bit pissed off.

I mean...bascially Apple (mac) are trying to be a record label, so why shouldn't apple records get pissed off? Even if Apple records really today only exists on paper.

... more from the apple geek file ... apple records and apple computer had a long standing agreement that mr jobs would *never* get into the realm of music as that would cause brand confusion. some people say that's why you can't get the beatles on itunes yet ... no doubt a big payment is coming from jobsy to apple corp sometime soon - i reckon you can get more than fiddy low hum - at least fiddy-two 25.

nice synch low hum - it's morning here in nyc (8.44am) what's your excuse!!

replying to robyn's thing now ... the way it works in IP law (broadly speaking) is that you can trademark usage of a common word. However, the trademark tends to be around the graphic representation of the word rather than the word itself. And, if you achieve trademark status, then sometone ina similar space has to stay away. usually, a lawyer will say you need to prove at least 12 months 'usage' of the word and the graphical representation of the word before you can get a TM ... go hard hum - and above is right about making this news - this is the sort of stuff the Dom Post / TV3 would eat up - especially that arts/culture reporter in wgtn - clayton someone? is he still around??

fuckin great to hear from you spilly. your posts even look like a different colour - got that NY style hehehe.

// nice synch low hum - it's morning here in nyc (8.44am) what's your excuse!!

haha. that was nice. I just got back from fucken good gig.

yeah how was that one blink? did kahu play?

oh boy...top class night. Kahu played some beautiful lush soundscapes, die! die! die! came on a for 15 minutes blew the roof off bodega, The shrugs moseyed through their wonderful fantastic songs and then batrider played their most energetic and powerful set to date. A huge night and Batrider proved that they were worthy headliners of such a fine line-up.

Kahu played? Goddamnit... that would have been the straw that broke the me going to that gig. Damnit.

Here's some cool trivia: The little musical chime that Apple computers make upon start-up is called "Sosumi", so named when the Apple computer guys realised that by adding that they were branching out into music.

an interesting side note. Hum is such a good name.....HUM.COM is currently on offer for sale at US$225,000
what do you reckon i can sell hum.co.nz for :) fiddy?
