Voom, Po-Ha and Venture_Electric 1/11
“Sorry to interrupt your danceable pop” Venture_Electric's lead singer said as the band launched a set, full of jangly guitar music.
Sporting a nice voice, there was not much else that
really interested me.
After a polite applause later in the set, Venture_Electric launched into an extended instrumental song, which really did impressed me, the feeling and emotion in the guitar started my head swaying.
Venture_Electric, with their dreamy, mellow music were
good but not spectacular, this is perfectly acceptable, as they have played maybe six gigs in total.
I do look forward to seeing a more developed Venture_Electric next time they come by Wellington.
I overheard someone saying Voom in their current
line-up, resembled the White Stripes, except the drummer wasn't as sexy as Meg White. The band were in-your-face, the drum kit right at the front of the stage, the drummer intensely concentrating on his rhythm. As the songs progressed the relationship between the two musicians became more and more intense, a chemistry I have never seen before made for compulsive viewing
Just the right amount of Voom’s dry humor in between
songs, kept the crowd’s faces in almost permanent
grins. I couldn't stop watching them.
After receiving a txt request from the crowd via the guitarist new cell Voom really reached a peak, with the beautiful melodic song “Beth”, washing over the appreciative crowd who clapped and cheer at its end.
After a few more songs and some more witty lines. Voom were finished for the night.
Po-Ha started up with an excited look in their eyes.
The drummer laying down an intense backbone to the songs, the string section started up on a beautiful slow song. By now the four or five people at the
front were swaying and smiling to the music, around fifty other people choosing to nod their heads and shouting out their feelings at the end of every song from a seated
posistion possibly washed out from the intensity of Voom's set.
Once again though I felt they got to a point, and died away a bit, their work on their vocal harmonies have improved Po-Ha’s songs even more, still didn't out weigh some dull periods during their set.
Apart from that it was a great night, with all three
bands putting a great show. Some of that praise must
go to the soundman, who got the sound pretty spot on.

Spot on? Blairs a f**kn legend. You failed to mention that Danny from Voom thought the sound was so good that he would have to sleep with the sound guy. Blair took that as a compliment ;)
I would just like to mention that I have seen venture_electric live 3 times now - each time they just get better and better. Benjiman has this amazing voice which is complimented by a tight rhythm section and some really great stuff with the effects pedal. This is real music with real melodies and real lyrics. This is music that puts you in a great mood and makes you sing in a slurred voice at 4am to a bunch of strangers at the one and only taxi stand in New Plymouth. This is music you put on after a hard weekend that helps you remember those really good moments. Its feel good music.
As for Voom - I think your spot on about the chemistry factor. The wellington crowd missed an amazing take on Stairway to Heaven by Voom in NP. They were trying to out-do the covers band upstairs at the venue. It was totally impromptu and it sounded wicked. Voom really know how to project themselves. I dont think Im allowed to comment on PO-HA as that would be bias but hey 2 great gigs. I agree that the vocal performance has lifted the set completely. PO-HA were completely relaxed on stage at Valve and it created a certain kind of ambience in the room. It made me have sweet dreams....
